Release the NIE

From my "Capital Games" column at www.thenation.com....

Reality intrudes again. President Bush and his allies keep insisting that the invasion of Iraq was essential to winning the fight against anti-American Islamic jihadists. The government's top experts on terrorism and Islamic extremism disagree. As The New York Times reported on Sunday, a National Intelligence Estimate produced earlier this year noted that the Iraq war has fueled Islamic radicalism around the globe and has caused the terrorist threat to grow. In other words, Bush's invasion of Iraq has been counterproductive. Or put this way: the ugly war in Iraq that has claimed the lives of thousands of American troops and tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians has placed the United States more at risk.

Times reporter Mark Mazzetti noted in his front-page article that he had spoken to "more than a dozen" U.S. government officials and outside experts who had either seen the NIE or who had participated in its creation. That's a lot of footwork. But he did not quote from the document itself, except to note that the NIE describes a radical Islamic movement of "self-generating" cells. (An NIE is the intelligence community's most definitive assessment of a major strategic issue and is supposed to represent the consensus view of the government's various intelligence agencies. This particular NIE is the first evaluation of global terrorism since the invasion of Iraq.)

The White House has claimed that the Times's account of the NIE did not represent the complete document. And Director of National Intelligence John Negroponte has declared--in response to the news of this NIE--that the Bush administration has scored significant success against the "global jihadist threat."

Well, is the threat now worse because of Bush's war in Iraq? Does the NIE say the war has made the jihadist threat more dangerous? The White House could resolve this very quickly by declassifying the NIE. If the report contains nuances or success stories not conveyed by the Times report (and those of other newspapers), releasing the report will clear things up.

The report is classified. But an NIE of this sort is probably more of an analytical document than a run-down of secret intelligence. And, certainly, the real secrets in the report--particularly references to sources and methods--can be redacted.

There is precedent for a partial release of an NIE. Months into the war in Iraq, when no WMDs had been found and the Bush administration was being accused of having misrepresented the prewar intelligence to hype the Iraq threat, the White House did declassify portions of the NIE on Iraq's WMDs. The point was to show that the intelligence community had informed the White House that Saddam Hussein was sitting on stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons. But that flawed NIE also contained dissents and conflicting information indicating there were serious questions about the WMD case. And before the White House released these slices of the NIE, Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney authorized Scooter Libby to disclose potions of the NIE to friendly reporters--most notably, Judith Miller of The New York Times. Libby, though, made sure not to share the dissents and contradicting material. Libby's highly selective leak to Miller did not end up helping the White House, and Bush's press operation subsequently made public whole chunks of the NIE. That, too, didn't get Bush out of the where-are-the-WMDs jam, for these excerpts showed there had been questions about key parts of the WMD case. (For more on all this, see the book I co-wrote with Michael Isikoff: Hubris: the Inside Story of Spin, Scandal, and the Selling of the Iraq War.)

If the White House was able to release parts of that NIE on WMDs, it can do the same with the NIE on Iraq and terrorism. It may, though, not be motivated to do so.

Mr. David Corn,

If there is even one line in the NIE that supports the WH delusion - it would be released. They would redact everything else.

The only real concern is who leaked what and where was it put to print. That is all this WH cares about - their secrecy.

Thanks

I thought you might cover this story.

It's a case study in contemporay politics. Spend some time searching the WEB and the NEWS sections of google. Media response on the right is suprisingly identical. Opinion on the left much more varied.

The DCI comes out and gives a non-denial denial, "It's not worse, it was already there."

I tried my best to kill bin Laden: Clinton
September 26, 2006

WASHINGTON: Former US president Bill Clinton has strongly defended his handling of the threat posed by Osama bin Laden, saying he tried to have the al-Qai'da leader killed and was attacked for his efforts by the same people who now criticise him for not doing enough.

"That's the difference in me and some, including all of the right-wingers who are attacking me now," Mr Clinton said during a combative interview on Fox News. "They ridiculed me for trying. They had eight months to try - they did not try."

Mr Clinton's defence of his record on terrorism came as the Democrats seized on newly disclosed intelligence assessments that contradict President George W. Bush's claim the war in Iraq has made the US safer, warning that it has increased the danger of attack.

The assessment, the consensus view of the US federal intelligence network, concluded that the Iraq war has fuelled Islamic extremism and contributed to the spread of terrorist cells, prompting Democrats to challenge Republican assertions that Mr Bush and his Republican allies offer the best protection against terrorism.

Last week on Npr's "Day to Day" Alex Chadwick challenged Bolton's claims about Iran's "alleged' nuclear weapons progam, by citing the IAEA's report ripping into the claims . Chadwick cited "U.N. inspectors investigating Iran's nuclear program angrily complained to the Bush administration and to a Republican congressman yesterday about a recent House committee report on Iran's capabilities, calling parts of the document "outrageous and dishonest" and offering evidence to refute its central claims."

Bolton responded to Chadwicks challenge by saying that the Iaea's report was "one source" of information. Once again undermining the Iaea.

Now the Bush administration will be busy undermining the NIE.

Facts do not get in the Bush administration's way.

Bush's church urges pull-out of US troops from Iraq -24/09/06

US President George W. BushÕs own church has called for the withdrawal of troops from Iraq and is urging direct action to end the war.

Writes Mark Schoeff Jr: United Methodist Church leaders helped launch a week of protest and civil disobedience against the war in Iraq by signing a declaration of peace in the capital, urging President Bush to pull US troops out of the country.

The Declaration of Peace, signed on 21 September 2006, is described as a call for nonviolent action to end the war in Iraq. The Washington DC event was one of 350 staged nationwide to promote the peace initiative.

Den & Saladin,

No. The real reason Clinton is making the talk show tours is to publicize his Global Warming Initiative which has been extrememly successful. He was trapped into talking about Osama on Fox. And I disagree with both of you. Have you read Clarke's book? Clinton did try. As I said yesterday, Clinton is a New Democrat. I don't like that. Still, he's intelligent and he did well by Democrats yesterday.

Mr. Corn,

Speaking of Dems, here's John Kerry's take on the NIE estimate: "Iraq is a fuel depot for terror fannning the flames of worldwide Jihadism." What Kerry has said so far on this subject is an excellent guide for all Dems to use in their fall campaigns.

Ethnic civil war rages through Iraq
1.00pm Monday September 25, 2006By Patrick Cockburn

Civil war is raging through the Iraqi countryside.

Sunni insurgents have largely taken control of the province of Diyala, where local leaders believe the insurgents are close to establishing a 'Taleban republic'. Officials in the strategically important, mixed Sunni and Shia province with a Kurdish minority, have no doubt about what is happening.

Lt Col Ahmed Ahmed Nuri Hassan, a weary looking commander of the federal police, says: "Now there is an ethnic civil war and it is getting worse every day."

At the moment the Sunni seem to be winning it. As the violence has escalated in Iraq over the past three years it has become too dangerous for journalists to find out what is happening in the provinces outside the capital.

The UN said last week that 5106 civilians were killed in Baghdad in July and August and 1493 in the provinces outside it.

Insurgents have cut the roads out of the capital to the west and the north.

How many Iraqi people have been died? The Bush administration does not count.

I would assume that the world is less safe today than it was prior to the invasion of Iraq.

I would also imagine that the world was less safe in February 1943 than it was in December of 1941. Certainly more millions of peoples had died.

The question should not be, "Is the world today more or less dangerous than before the invasion of Iraq?" It should be, "Is the world today more or less dangerous than if Iraq had not been invaded at all?" That is a question whose answer is yet forthcoming. For anyone to say how it should be answered today, either on the right or left, is sheer folly.

New York City's Reservists Are Asked to Return Iraq Pay
NY Times

By ANDY NEWMAN
Published: September 23, 2006

When they were called up for military service in the wake of 9/11, hundreds of uniformed city workers in the Reserves faced the suspension of their city health and pension benefits. The city offered them an option: it would keep paying their salaries and continue their benefits, but when they returned they would have to repay the city their city salary or their military pay, whichever was less.

On its face, the offer made sense. And many reservists had only a few days to get their affairs together before shipping out, hardly enough time to consult accountants. Nearly all took the deal. As the war dragged on, more than 1,600 city employees, mostly police officers, signed up for the benefits program.

Now the bills from the city are coming due, for far more than many veterans imagined they would have to pay, as much as $200,000, and often for more money than they ever received.

The city is demanding that the veterans repay their gross salaries, even though they never saw about a third of the money, which went for taxes and other deductions. The commissioner of administrative services, Martha K. Hirst, said veterans should be able to get back the difference between gross and take-home pay by amending their tax returns. But several tax accountants said the city had created an accounting quagmire.

I don't think the possibility of nukes (I really hope the military can stop Bushco on this) should detain us from working on the problem of global warming though.

Torture Victim Had No Terror Link, Canada Told US
By Scott Shane
The New York Times
Monday 25 September 2006

Washington - When the United States sent Maher Arar to Syria, where he was tortured for months, the deportation order stated unequivocally that Mr. Arar, a Canadian software engineer, was a member of Al Qaeda. But a few days earlier, Canadian investigators had told the F.B.I. that they had not been able to link him to the terrorist group.

That is one of the disclosures in the 1,200-page report released last week after a two-year Canadian investigation of Mr. Arar's case found him to be innocent of any terrorist ties. The report urges the Canadian government to formally protest the American treatment of Mr. Arar, a recommendation Canadian officials are considering.

Mr. Arar, 37, who now lives in British Columbia, has a lawsuit against United States officials and agencies that is on appeal, and he has demanded an explanation for his treatment from the Bush administration.

U.S. Army extends 4,000 tours of duty in Iraq
_______________

WASHINGTON - In a new sign of mounting strain from the war in Iraq, the Army has extended the combat tours of about 4,000 soldiers who would otherwise be returning home, defense officials said Monday.

The 1st Brigade of 1st Armored Division, which is operating in the vicinity of Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, will be kept in place for several weeks beyond its scheduled departure, the officials said. The officials spoke only on condition of anonymity because the decision has not been formally announced by the Pentagon.

The brigadeÕ³ home base is in Germany. The soldiersÕ families were notified on Monday that instead of going home in early January as scheduled, the brigade would be kept in Iraq until February Ń an extension of about six weeks, one of the officials said. Army officials also have notified members of Congress.

Address to the United Nations
We Need Partners, Not Bosses
By EVO MORALES

It is an enormous satisfaction to be here present, representing my people, from my homeland, Bolivia and especially the indigenous movement.

I want to tell you, that after 500 years of be looked down upon, at times considered to be savages, animals, in some regions condemned to extermination, thanks to this consciousness and this uprising and to the struggle for the rights of the peoples, we got here to repair the historic damage, to repair 500 years of damage.

During the republic, we were equally discriminated against, marginalised, they never took into account this struggle of the peoples for life, for humanity during the last 20 years, with their application of an economic model--neoliberalism--that continued the looting of our natural resources, the privatisation of our basic services.

Convinced, and we are convinced, that the way of privatisation of basic services is the best way of violating human rights.

And these small considerations oblige me to say the truth here about the livelihoods of these families, I come to express this sentiment for the humanity of the peoples, from my people. I come here to express the suffering, the product of marginalisation, of exclusion, I come to express above all else, this anti-colonial sentiment of the peoples that struggle for equality and justice.

[...]

I would like to take advantage of this opportunity, Ms president, to say that there are also other historical injustices, such as the criminalisation of the coca leaf. I want to say, this is a green coca leaf, it is not the white of cocaine, this coca leaf represents Andean culture, it is a coca leaf that represents the environment and the hope of our peoples.

It is not possible that the coca leaf is legal for Coca Cola and that the coca leaf is illegal for other medicinal purposes in our country, and in the whole world.

We want to say, that it is important that the United Nations recognise that with the help of North American universities, with European universities, we have scientifically demonstrated that the coca leaf does not damage human health.

It is very lamentable that due to customs, to bad customs, that the coca leaf is derailed into an illegal problem, we are conscious of that, that is why we say as producers of the coca leaf that there will not be free coca cultivation, but nor will there be zero coca.

The previously implemented policies, that had conditions imposed, talked of zero coca, zero coca is like talking of zero Quechuas, Aymaras, Mojenos, Chiquitanos in my country, this finished with our government, no matter how underdeveloped our country is, a country with economic problems which are a product of the looting of our natural resource wealth.

"Is the world today more or less dangerous than if Iraq had not been invaded at all?"

If the content of April NIE reported in the NYT yesterday is to be believed, the answer is MORE DANGEROUS. The NIE is the concensus opinion of 16 intelligence agencies.

Three major newspapers reported over the weekend that a classified National Intelligence Estimate written five months ago shows Islamic radicalism is flowering worldwide. And we planted the seed that gave rise to this boomerang of a crop by invading Iraq. An NIE is a consensus among the nation's 16 different spy agencies. US News (link)

Has Bush read the NIE?In July 2003, a White House official acknowledged that Bush and Condoleezza Rice did not read the full National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq before going to war. Jon Schwarz wonders whether White House reporters will ask Tony Snow if Bush read the most recent NIE. Think Progress (link)

So let me get this straight, the C.I.A, the N.S.A. Negroponte, every single intelligence branch we've got, all got together, produced a National Intelligence Estimate and decided that the way that the Bush administration has prosecuted the war on terrorism has actually made it quantitatively worse. And remember that all of these intelligence branches, for the past six years, have been aggressively purged by the Bushies of Democrats and other pesky non-believers. HufPo (link)

Spy Agencies Say Iraq War Worsens Terrorism Threat
By MARK MAZZETTI
Published: September 24, 2006
WASHINGTON, Sept. 23 — A stark assessment of terrorism trends by American intelligence agencies has found that the American invasion and occupation of Iraq has helped spawn a new generation of Islamic radicalism and that the overall terrorist threat has grown since the Sept. 11 attacks.

This would never have occured if we were treating people with respect instead of attempting to convert them to OUR supposed "correctness".

The real question that needs to be asked is, do we have more enemies or more friends?

With a wise approach to terrorism it would have been possible to have more friends in the world.

Meanwhile we continue to kill and kill, more every day, amping up the discord among lost friends in the Middle East.

#48,

Your questions are meaningless, therefore they do not warrant answers.

The more salient questions are the ones which we can and should look into, such as:

Given the information available at the time, did the Administration act honestly and responsibly?

Given the choice to short-circuit the United Nations and illegally (according to Kofi Annan and many international law scholars such as Francis Boyle) invade Iraq, did the Administration responsibly use American lives and treasure?

Given the choice to irresponsibly misuse American lives and treasure, did the Administration compound the error by refusing to listen to criticism from within the military as well as from without?

We might speculate as to the conditions had the invasion not occured; extrapolate the trajactories of events as it were and form probabilities, so I'll venture that the realistic assesment of your hypothetical construct is that it is probably worse for the invasion.

Wordy games.

#45 Den

Sweetie, it does no good to be that negative. I keep telling that to Saladin. Yeah, we all get down in the dumps, rightfully so. As far as I'm concerned, I have to maintain just an inkling of positivity or I completely lack energy to do anything. That's not good.

Regarding Clinton, first he raised mucho dinero for AIDS. Recall who some of his greatest contributors are, Bill Gates and Sir Richard Branson. These are not stupid people. They're serious about their philanthropy. They would not give out such bucks without knowing where it's going. In the case of Branson, I heard Ted Turner tell David Letterman the other night that Branson's donation was intended to be an investment in alternative energies. He'll profit from it and most likely turn it around and give more. That's the ticket! That's what we need all of those good, rich guys to start doing! Turner's another giver to progressive minded charities.

Think of it this way. With global warming on the increase, impoverishment is on the rise. They'll just be more and more poor people. With no crops or food. We'll die of the heat, lack of water, starvation, drowning, all of the above. Or the nukes, whatever. That shouldn't stop us. We can fix all of the things, step by step.

I profoundly believe this Earth is worth saving.

There's speculation that Al Gore may be running for President. I would like that. You ask where he is, he's out lecturing on cutting CO2 emissions, eloquently I might add.

To all particularly James,

This is the brief article in The Nation I mentioned earlier. To date, I think it's the best yet on plans for Iran.

Little Difference

As we enter the twenty-first century, I have come to the realization that there is little difference between the Democrats and the War Party of the bushits. Even with little difference between the two parties I may still vote because I do not want to give up my right to vote.

The reason for me now questioning to vote for Democrats is the Democrats are also warmongers. The Democrats will give you a bone with some meat on the bone so the soup can have some flavor. The bushits will give you a bone but they scrape all the meat off the bone. How you enhance the flavor of your soup that is for you to figure out. With either party in power it will be important for the 90% of Americans to master the art of making soup. Each home will be a soup kitchen for the poor and disenfranchised 90% of Americans.

In trying to find out the difference between the Democrats and the bushits there is now little difference between the two parties. The Democrats will ram a poker up your ass and the poker is straight with a curved section at the end that is similar to the War Party. Pulling the poker out of your rectum will create problems and healing will take a long time.

The bushits will ram a poker up your ass. The poker is straight and attached to the poker is a curved section as we see with some fireplaces to spread the burning wood. This poker goes in but when the bushits pull the poker out of your ass, your rectum is shot to hell. Healing of the rectum takes a long, long time. As you can see, there is little difference between the Democrats and the bushits or War Party regarding the pokers that are rammed up your rectum.

Either party is going to screw the 90% of Americans and the Democrats are now linked to the bushits and they are operating with little difference from the War Party. So either way you look at it you are going to have a poker rammed up your ass.

P.S. I have one more point to make that either party will give Nazi Americans shit. The Nazis will give us more shit and the Democrats may give us less shit. Yet, we cannot forget the fact that we will have to chew on shit. The only difference will be more shit or less shit for our shit eating smiles.

P.P.S. B.O.H.I.C.A.! What an appropriate word for our times! Bohica means BEND OVER HERE IT COMES AGAIN! Do you have that feeling of constantly bending over to be rammed by some Nazi? If you do, please remember to protect and hold onto your cajones so they are not rammed by the Nazis. A shot to hell rectum is enough of a bad experience. Try to avoid the ball busting experience as much as possible!!!

Wordy Rappinghood - Tom Tom Club
What are words worth?
What are words worth? - words

Words in papers, words in books
Words on TV, words for crooks
Words of comfort, words of peace
Words to make the fighting cease
Words to tell you what to do
Words are working hard for you
Eat your words but don't go hungry
Words have always nearly hung me

What are words worth?
What are words worth? - words

Words of nuance, words of skill
And words of romance are a thrill
Words are stupid, words are fun
Words can put you on the run

Mots pressˇ, mots sensˇ,
Mots qui disent la veritˇ,
Mots maudits, mots mentis,
Mots qui manquent le fruit d'esprit

What are words worth?
What are words worth? - words

It's a rap race, with a fast pace
Concrete words, abstract words
Crazy words and lying words
Hazy words and dying words
Words of faith and tell me straight
Rare words and swear words
Good words and bad words

What are words worth?
What are words worth? - words

Words can make you pay and pay
Four-letter words I cannot say
Panty, toilet, dirty devil
Words are trouble, words are subtle
Words of anger, words of hate
Words over here, words out there
In the air and everywhere
Words of wisdom, words of strife
Words that write the book I like
Words won't find no right solution
To the planet earth's pollution
Say the right word, make a million
Words are like a certain person
Who can't say what they mean
Don't mean what they say
With a rap rap here and a rap rap there
Here a rap, there a rap
Everywhere a rap rap

Rap it up for the common good
Let us enlist the neighbourhood
It's okay, I've overslept
This is a wordy rappinghood, okay, bye.

Jim Webb, Secretary of the Navy in the Reagan Administration and currently a Democratic candidate for Senate in Virginia, expressed some caution about reports of the carrier deployment, saying, "Remember, carrier groups regularly rotate in and out of that region." But he added, "I do not believe that there should be any elective military action taken against Iran without a separate authorization vote by the Congress. In my view, the 2002 authorization which was used for the invasion of Iraq should not extend to Iran."

How Bush Rules

Some of you might have noticed, or not, that Sidney Blumenthal’s book is published by Princeton University Press. One of the nice things about buying a book from a university press is that you’re almost guaranteed that the manuscript has been read by several experts in the field who certify that it is more or less bullshit-free–and that, if it is overly apportioned with bullshit, the manuscript is sent back to the author for further revision and another round of bullshit detection. This process they call "peer review." For Blumenthal’s How Bush Rules, I was chosen by Princeton UP as one of the peers. (link)

Her name is B.J.

My dreams are more like nightmares that I cannot shake. Here is one of my nightmares.

Her actual name is Barbara Jenna Doe. B.J. was an all American young lady - attractive, intelligent, a vibrant personality who made people feel good. She was planning to go to Yale in the Fall. B.J. did very well on her SAT and Act tests. Her summer was planned in preparation to attend Yale in September.

The military draft was reinstated and B.J. received her letter to report to boot Camp in mid-August. In December B.J. came home for Christmas. Her parents were excited to see her. Daddy had a gleam in his eye every time B.J. was home. Barbara Jenna looked sharp and impressive in her formal military uniform. Her parents were proud of her.

After Christmas B.J. returned to camp and in mid-January B.J. and her company received orders that they were going to attack Iran as part of bush's Christmas wish list through more lies. In mid-February her parents received the dreaded letter saying that Barbara Jenna Doe was killed in action. The letter did not reveal how she was killed but friends were able to find out that B.J.'s truck hit a land mine. The truck exploded and her one leg went through the window of a nearby building; her torso remained with the truck; and her head went through the windshield of the truck and rolled down the street and stopped at a curb. What a waste of human potential to be killed for the bush lies.

B.J. was not like one of bush sr.'s fourteen grandchildren who have never served in the military services. She was drafted and she had to serve in the military armed services.

This is the first 20 minutes of Bill Clinton’s interview with Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday. In this clip, Wallace asks Clinton why he didn’t do more to capture or kill Osama bin Laden while he was in office. Clinton clearly feels like he has been set up and doesn’t hold back in telling Wallace just how he feels.

Video – WMP

John Amato: It makes you wonder why Wallace has never asked any Republican in Bush’s administration why they didn’t catch Osama, doesn’t it? When Wallace tells us that he got emails about it so… he just had to bring it up?. Has he ever mentioned emailers before on his show? Wallace brought the FOX News right-wing agenda to play on this interview. We should email Chris every time he has on anyone from the Bush administration and see if our questions get through.

Rice admits that the Bush administration didn’t want to retaliate for the Cole bombing, despite Clarke’s prodding:

CLARKE: I suggested, beginning in January of 2001, that … there was an open issue which should be decided about whether or not the Bush administration should retaliate for the Cole attack [which occurred in October 2000].

Unfortunately, there was no interest, no acceptance of that proposition. And I was told on a couple of occasions, "Well, you know, that happened on the Clinton administration’s watch." I didn’t think it made any difference. I thought the Bush administration, now that it had the CIA saying it was al Qaeda, should have responded.

RICE: I do not believe to this day that it would have been a good thing to respond to the Cole, given the kinds of options that we were going to have. … We really thought that the Cole incident was passed, that you didn’t want to respond tit-for-tat. …Just responding to another attack in an insufficient way we thought would actually probably embolden the terrorists — they had been emboldened by everything else that had been done to them — and that the best course was to look ahead to a more aggressive strategy against them.

More from those fun loving family values folks:

For Abramoff, Lawmaker Slandered Teen Sex Slave
By Paul Kiel - September 25, 2006, 2:56 PM

A Texas congressman is denying charges he slandered a foreign sex slave at the behest of Jack Abramoff. But documents obtained by TPMmuckraker contradict the Republican's claims.

In November of 1997, Rep. Ralph Hall (R-TX) publicly questioned the credibility of a teenage girl's claims that she'd been the victim of the sex trade in the Northern Mariana Islands. The statement, which Rep. Hall entered into the Congressional Record, was prepared by Jack Abramoff, the lobbyist for the islands.

"[S]he wanted to do nude dancing," Hall's statement said of the fifteen-year-old girl. She had earlier told federal investigators that she'd been forced to work for a local nightclub in a nightly live sex show. You can read the entirety of Hall's statement here.

Press accounts at the time detailed how the girl had been taken from her parents in the Phillippines, and forced to perform sex acts on stage and before video cameras at a Northern Marianas sex club. A 1998 Department of Labor report confirmed those reports.

Juan Cole backs up Clintons claims that Fox's Chris Wallace has not played hardball with the Republicans. Wallace has been a weenie when it comes to asking the Warmongering Bush administration hardball questions.

THIS IS AT JUAN COLE'S WEBSITE
Wallace maintained that he also asked tough questions about failure to tackle Bin Laden of Republican politicians.

Here is Wallace interviewing Republican Vice President Richard Bruce Cheney on Bin Laden in February, 2005. Compare these softballs to the hatchet job he did on Clinton:

' WALLACE: President Bush did not mention Osama bin Laden in his State of the Union address.

Do you have any idea where he is, even what country he's in?

CHENEY: That would be just speculation. And if I did know, I obviously couldn't talk about it.

WALLACE: I mean, the current speculation is that he's somewhere in the border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

CHENEY: I don't want to elaborate on where he might or might not be.

WALLACE: How much operational control do you believe he still has over al Qaeda? And 3 1/2 years after 9/11, why haven't we still caught him?

CHENEY: Well, we have done enormous damage to al Qaeda. The attacks that we've been able to mount, the work we've done with other nations, the Pakistanis, the Saudis and others, we've had an enormous and, I think, devastating impact on the organization -- captured or killed literally thousands of them around the world

In this same spirit, Bush regales us with tales of the great "progress" being made in Iraq and Afghanistan, even as those two countries are ripped apart by rising anti-American insurgencies. Do Talk to Strangers

Victoria Bahr talks to "invisible people."

This does not involve siances in a candle-filled room or getting up early to search a dewy forest for leprechauns. What it does require is simply taking time to acknowledge the existence of people who stand patiently on the sidelines of our lives.

For Bahr that has meant conversations with the groundskeeper and maids at a hotel, the woman at the bus stop, and the cashier at the grocery store.

"Each one of us needs to receive acknowledgment and appreciation; it's as basic to life as food and water," explains Bahr. "It takes so little effort to notice people in our frame of reference. What a shame to treat them as if they are invisible! What a missed opportunity to make a difference in someone's life!"

But what a golden chance through those conversations to glimpse the God-given spark within every heart we meet.

In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets. (Matthew 7:12)

Thank You, Abba, for each person whose path crosses mine today.

Hart's article well worth reading. The yeas and neas are building as to whether the Bush administration warmongers will break International law once again and pre-emptively attack Iran. The Bush administration is committed to destroying the U.s. slowly but surely (happent to be killing quite a few people in the process).

The October Surprise
By Gary Hart
HuffingtonPost.com

Saturday 23 September 2006

It should come as no surprise if the Bush Administration undertakes a preemptive war against Iran sometime before the November election.

Were these more normal times, this would be a stunning possibility, quickly dismissed by thoughtful people as dangerous, unprovoked, and out of keeping with our national character. But we do not live in normal times. And we do not have a government much concerned with our national character. If anything, our current Administration is out to remake our national character into something it has never been.

The steps will be these: Air Force tankers will be deployed to fuel B-2 bombers, Navy cruise missile ships will be positioned at strategic points in the northern Indian Ocean and perhaps the Persian Gulf, unmanned drones will collect target data, and commando teams will refine those data. The latter two steps are already being taken.

Then the president will speak on national television. He will say this: Iran is determined to develop nuclear weapons; if this happens, the entire region will go nuclear; our diplomatic efforts to prevent this have failed; Iran is offering a haven to known al Qaeda leaders; the fate of our ally Israel is at stake; Iran persists in supporting terrorism, including in Iraq; and sanctions will have no affect (and besides they are for sissies). He will not say: ...and besides, we need the oil.

Always Leave Yourself Laughing

Studies abound on the connection between staying happy and staying healthy. Scientific proof shows that laughter strengthens the immune system and lowers levels of stress hormones as well as blood pressure.

Psychologist Steve Sultanoff says that laughter also appears to boost the body's production of infection-fighting antibodies. Laughter is also linked to increasing one's tolerance for pain.

So what are some things to add to your daily "to do" list to keep that laughter prescription filled? Rent a funny movie. Go to a comedy show.

Listen to funny audiotapes or read a humorous book while commuting. Take the time to be silly.

And when all else fails, remember that God loves you. That is always a reason to smile.

When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion - then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy. (Psalm 126:1,2)

With You, Father, I find joy and all good things.

Sal, I think Bush is the one with the methane problem.

Carey, Am I negative or realistic?

I tend to the latter which says to me, we are headed for a crash course in Armaggeddon

Ask yourself why the bush cabal has their sights set on Iran? Ask why Bush will not simply engage in direct talks with Iran.

The reason I believe is the intent to use the might of the US military to force the Middle East into submitting to HIS demands because BIG OIL is counting on it.

You do not realize that BIG OIL is the major player here. The cabal is doing what it has always done, act and to hell with the consequences which has been proven with the Iraq debacle.

You think the terrorists have increased in number now? You aint seen nothin yet!

We will end up with a whole lot of Middle East folks running across the porous borders and bringing the war zone to our doors.Do not forget that you CANNOT fence off the ocean on both coasts!

Then Global warming will be just a good idea at the time.

Nothing good will come from blasting Iran, but then Bush and the others do not care about us anyway.

Bush and the rest are war crimminals, FACT! and they have their fingers on the button, REALITY.

Thoughts on the "Bringing Terrorists to Justice Act of 2006" By JOHN W. DEAN Friday, Sep. 22, 2006 There are lots of good reasons to employ military tribunals to bring terrorists to justice. One of the most persuasive is to keep terrorists out of the American criminal justice system. Trying them in federal courts could endanger the lives of judges, juries, and prosecutors - not to mention their families. It is unfair to assign such life-threatening work to civilians. Imagine the practical problems in bringing Osama bin Laden to justice in any federal district court anywhere. The Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure, and the security system at even the best protected federal courthouse, never envisioned such an enemy (with his own covert army of suicidal supporters) as a defendant. Or think about the problem of incarcerating or executing bin Laden at any federal prison after his conviction. His supporters will never believe he received a fair trial, or that he should be punished for anything. It would no doubt take an army to provide protection to those involved in the processes John dean findlaw #### The interview with Juan cole at Democracy now is so informative.

It's inevitable that each of us will experience tragedy in our lives. What's up to us is how we respond. We can let it stop us, or we can transform it into the impetus for constructive change.

To (Israelites) belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises - the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, comes the Messiah. (Romans 9:4-5)

Oh Den,

To be realistic is to be constantly depressed. So I add laughter, just like Gerald pointed out. You do that too, you know. I so enjoy your funny posts. Yes, of course, absolutely see things through steel eyes, maintain a healthy dose of cynicism etc. I'm not saying we take on a Pollyanna face.

On Armaggeddon, we're going to breach the edge with Iran. Things will snowball, there's no doubt. Hell will break out all over. We must brace ourselves and our children. But, I think Earth will survive. It has to. I promised my son that I would do my damnedest to make sure. He's the one who's most worried about global warming in our house.

To be totally honest, I'm frightened to death. I just can't believe this is about to happen. Things have taken on an air of complete surrealness, haven't they? The soft fall days mislead us.

Capt, a word of advice about quitting cigs.

I smoked for thirty years and tried twice, first time for 5 years, then started cause my g-friend smoked.

Best advice is to consider quitting a test of your internal mettle, ie, do you have the GUTS to quit. Intestinal fortitude is what it will take, nothing else, no patches, no pills, just do it and DO NOT look back.

You will never get over cigs, you will dream of smoking, you will crave the butts.

Upside? You will smell better to others and your smeller will work better. No more dropping hot cherries on your upholstery, no more hacking chunks in the morning.

It will be the most difficult task in life you have ever faced and thats no bull. Think about your inner strength and how strong you think you are, you will need it all to persevere.

If your spouse smokes too, you both have to quit, too easy to relapse.

It is totally worth quitting if you decide to.

Good luck!!

Gee, I don't know Den and Capt. My sister chain-smoked for nearly as long as you did Den and the only way she could quit was with nicotine gum. She chain-chewed that for a while but now seldom chews at all. We thought she would never quit. I don't know if I could quit on intestinal fortitude alone.

Marital Bliss

Dear Cornposters:

Let me share with you some information on marital bliss. I have a great wife! She keeps me in line at various times. Today, as with many days, we talked about America and the world. She said, "Don't let what is going on in America get to me!" She is absolutely right. The problem that I have is not that the goons and thugs will affect me directly because I consider Bush and his cabal not even the equivalent of a pimple on my behind.

Bush and his cabal will affect my children, your children, and your children's children and all the children on this planet.

I can talk about the importance of laughter, a sense of humor and the importance of prayer but at times it is easier to say than to practice. My wife keeps me in line with her steady and perspective will. She also said, "Don't let Bush and his cabal upset you because being upset won't change what Bush and his cabal will be doing!" She is right!

Thank God for my wife!

Sincerely,

Gerald

Consider the evil empire you support with every dollar spent on those toxic, death dealing cancer sticks.
Kathleen, if the truth that Vanunu told is a danger to Israel, I say, bring it on. If they are innocent and benign in their intentions, why keep all these secrets? Why refuse to sign the NPT? Why not allow inspections? Why the insane hypocrisy? Why bitch and moan about the neighbors who have no nuclear ability while hiding 200+ nuclear WMD's? They should put up or shut up.

I think Bill Clinton was spot on to appear to blow his top on TeeVee with Chris Wallace. The Big Dawg took the opportunity to tell a national audience that he's pretty damned tired of the bush administration's endless efforts to paint him and the Democrats, in general, as soft on terrorism and national security. That's what it was all about.

And Clinton's timing was PERFECT -- he exuded passion, even testiness -- on the same weekend that the NIE shows that bush's invasion of Iraq (bush's war of choice) has served to increase the terror threat to the United States.

Clinton also deals in facts. He's sick and tired of the current bush president who twists facts and reality to suit his perverted political predilections. Go, Bill!

German opera house cancels provocative Mohammed staging
Sep 25 3:29 PM US/Eastern

Berlin's Deutsche Opera has removed the provocative staging of a Mozart opera from its schedule for fear of enraging Muslims, the opera house said in a statement.

One of three opera houses in the German capital, it cancelled director Hans Neuenfels's production of "Idomeneo", a 1781 drama set in ancient Crete, because authorities warned it could present an "incalculable security risk".

In the staging, which sparked audience protests during its premiere in December 2003, King Idomeneo presents the lopped-off heads of Poseidon, Jesus, Buddha and the Prophet Mohammed and displays them on four chairs.

German critics saw the show at the time as a radical attack on religion and religious wars.

Musical director Kirsten Harms decided to cancel the new staging of the opera, scheduled for November, to avert "any danger to the audience or staff" that could arise from violent protests.

The opera itself deals with resistance to sacrifices demanded by the gods but makes no mention of any of the world's major religions.

The cancellation comes two weeks after Pope Benedict XVI sparked Muslim anger on a visit to his native Germany when he quoted from a medieval text that criticized some teachings of the Prophet Mohammed as "evil and inhuman".

And the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten set off a firestorm in the Muslim world when it printed 12 caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed last September and other, mostly European, newspapers followed suit.

Islam considers images of the prophet to be blasphemous.

Bush's Own Church Has Called For The Withdrawal Of Troops From Iraq

United Methodist Church leaders helped launch a week of protest and civil disobedience against the war in Iraq by signing a declaration of peace in the capital, urging President Bush to pull US troops out of the country.

The Declaration of Peace, signed on 21 September 2006, is described as a call for nonviolent action to end the war in Iraq. The Washington DC event was one of 350 staged nationwide to promote the peace initiative.

More than 500 groups, almost half of them faith organizations, are involved in the declaration of peace effort, which recently retired Bishop Susan Morrison said includes "acts of moral witness to seek a new course for our country."

By signing the peace document in front of the White House, the United Methodists and other protesters also hope to influence congressional races in November 2006 by forcing candidates to outline where they stand on the war.

Speakers at the Washington DC rally accusing the President of lying about Iraq possessing weapons of mass destruction and launching what they called an illegal offensive.

Ex-Military Officers Criticize Rumsfeld

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Retired military officers on Monday bluntly accused Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld of bungling the war in Iraq, saying U.S. troops were sent to fight without the best equipment and that critical facts were hidden from the public.

"I believe that Secretary Rumsfeld and others in the administration did not tell the American people the truth for fear of losing support for the war in Iraq," retired Maj. Gen. John R. S. Batiste told a forum conducted by Senate Democrats.

A second military leader, retired Maj. Gen. Paul Eaton, assessed Rumsfeld as "incompetent strategically, operationally and tactically."

"Mr. Rumsfeld and his immediate team must be replaced or we will see two more years of extraordinarily bad decision-making," Eaton added at the forum, held six weeks before the Nov. 7 midterm elections, in which the war is a central issue.

The current failed policies are the problem not the answer. Sheer might will not win this conflict. The occupation of Iraq has only served the terrorists. We need to get smart and fix the course not stay stupid and stay the failed course. That much is very clear.

S&P 500 hits 5-1/2-year high
By Alexandra Twin, CNNMoney.com senior writer

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Stocks rallied Monday, with the S&P 500 closing at a five-and-a-half-year high, as investors bet that the slowdown in the economy and pullback in energy prices means the Federal Reserve won't lift interest rates again any time soon.

The Nasdaq composite (up 30.14 to 2,249.07, Charts) added nearly 1.4 percent, according to early tallies. The tech-fueled index had been on both sides of unchanged in the morning, before moving higher at midday.

The Dow Jones industrial average (up 67.71 to 11,575.81, Charts) added 0.6 percent, ending within 150 points of its all-time high of 11,722.98, hit on Jan. 14, 2000.

The Standard & Poor's 500 (up 11.59 to 1,326.37, Charts) index added 0.9 percent and knocked out its 2006 high from May, closing at its best point since Feb. 2001.....

Army Warns Rumsfeld It's Billions Short

An extraordinary action by the chief of staff sends a message: The Pentagon must increase the budget or reduce commitments in Iraq and elsewhere.

WASHINGTON The Army's top officer withheld a required 2008 budget plan from Pentagon leaders last month after protesting to Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld that the service could not maintain its current level of activity in Iraq plus its other global commitments without billions in additional funding.

The decision by Gen. Peter J. Schoomaker, the Army's chief of staff, is believed to be unprecedented and signals a widespread belief within the Army that in the absence of significant troop withdrawals from Iraq, funding assumptions must be completely reworked, say current and former Pentagon officials.

"This is unusual, but hell, we're in unusual times," said a senior Pentagon official involved in the budget discussions.

Schoomaker failed to submit the budget plan by an Aug. 15 deadline. The protest followed a series of cuts in the service's funding requests by both the White House and Congress over the last four months.

David said: "President Bush and his allies keep insisting that the invasion of Iraq was essential to winning the fight against anti-American Islamic jihadists. The government's top experts on terrorism and Islamic extremism disagree."

Well, now that I have read most of HUBRIS and how you ripped our national intelligence `experts' to shreads, why should anyone put any stock in what any NIE says? Have you now done a flip-flop on us, David? or, do you think having Porter Goss as the DCIA and the shedding of dubious analysts like Paul Pillar and Ms. Plame had led to a dramatic and positive turnaround of our `inteliigence' agencies?

You clearly believe Bushco trusted their instincts more than any potentially faluty and certainly easily fabricated intelligence. Shades of Ronald Reagan in his ending the Cold War! Don't underestimate instincts; it's what make most sucessful people, successful! If you mostly listen/follow `operative', (intelligence, financial, political or what have you), how do you differentiate yourself?

Herbert Spencer's Evolved Capitalists:

"Proclaiming Death to the Weakling, Wealth to the Strong"

Assaulting humanity and the Earth with shocking impunity, the White House's Machiavellian acolytes of Strauss shamelessly lead the charge for soulless corporations, obscenely wealthy individuals, perverse hypocrites of the Religious Right, a diminishing number of allies, authoritarian regimes that bow to their will, and their state terrorist proxy in Tel Aviv.

Psychologically and economically enslaving billions of human beings, facilitating the deaths of millions, and redefining the word "exploitation", the relative few who monopolize most of the world's material wealth and military power mercilessly inflict widespread suffering to ensure the perpetuation of their morally repugnant existences fraught with excess and hedonism.

When satiated to the point of nausea by their gluttonous over-indulgence, they occasionally spew torrents of putrid vomit upon the rest of humanity as they purge to renew their blunted appetites. What a blessing for the have-nots to receive such a feast!

Remember that the United States of America was conceived as a constitutional republic by people who had overthrown a tyrant. Unfortunately, they lacked the foresight to envision the evolution of a predatory economic system which would essentially enslave most of the populace to land-lords, creditors, employers, corporations, a failing health care system, and deeply inculcated materialism.
