David said: "President Bush and his allies keep insisting that the invasion of Iraq was essential to winning the fight against anti-American Islamic jihadists. The government's top experts on terrorism and Islamic extremism disagree."
Well, now that I have read most of HUBRIS and seen how you ripped our `national intelligence experts' to shreads, why should anyone put any stock in what any NIE says? Have you now done a flip-flop on us, David? or, do perhaps you think having Porter Goss as the DCIA and the shedding of analysts like Paul Pillar and Ms. Plame had led to a dramatic and positive turnaround of our `inteliigence' agencies?
From your book, you clearly believe Bushco trusted their own instincts more than any potentially faluty and certainly easily fabricated intelligence. Shades of Ronald Reagan in his ending the Cold War!
Don't underestimate instincts! It's what make most sucessful people, successful! If you mostly listen/follow `operatives' (intelligence, financial, political or what have you), how does one differentiate oneself from the herd?

"Tenet conceded that no NIE had been prepared. The Democrats were stunned. Bush was heading toward war, and the White House hadnÕt asked the CIA to produce an NIE on the most pressing national security question of the moment. For Graham and the Democrats, this was incomprehensible. The Democrats requested that Tenet assemble an NIE, but the CIA director said his people were too busy with other matters.", [Michael Isikoff and David Corn, Hubris]

"It was all about the intelligence. We know, we know Cheney and the others were saying. But Democrats on the intelligence committee wanted more than such assurances. The day after Cheney appeared on Meet the Press, Senator Dick Durbin sent a letter to Tenet, again asking for a National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq's WMDs. He also asked for an unclassified summary of this NIE so "the American public can better understand this important issue." Durbin was demanding that Bush and the CIA show the intelligence committee the full and best information, justifying war. And several other Democrats on the committee Bob Graham, Carl Levin, and Dianne Feinstein joined Durbin in his request. After Tenet received Durbin's letter, the CIA began working on an estimate on a rush basis.", [Michael Isikoff and David Corn, Hubris]

David said, previous thread: "As The New York Times reported on Sunday, a National Intelligence Estimate produced earlier this year noted that the Iraq war has fueled Islamic radicalism around the globe and has caused the terrorist threat to grow."
I have NOT read the NYT article but I'll just bet the Times DOES NOT mention that Danish cartoons, French laws prohibiting facial coverings (hajib?), Dutch playwright's shining a spotlight on Islam's treatment of women, Israel's increasing success as a western democracy amidst Arab woe-be-us, Iran's arming of Hezbollah & fanning religious extremism, etc... are all contributing to more radialism among the Muslims loonies.
Hell, if one of them Islamic loonies see my posts or that of factchecker, it will almost certainly radicalize them more. Without worldly leaders among the Muslim masses, damn near everything we do and have done on a regular civilazational basis, are liable to radicalize those f***ing Islamic Fascists. Like facthcecer said, sometimes, you just have to DO IT in large quantities.

"On chemical weapons, the NIE acknowledged, Òwe have little specific information on IraqÕs CW stockpile.Ó As for the mobile biological weapons labs, most of the NIEÕs section on this was based on a single source: Curveball.", [Michael Isikoff and David Corn, Hubris]
The only "Shredding" of the NIE was how the neocons cherry-picked and flat out lied. That would be the government shredding the NIE not Corn nor Isakoff.
But, as always, facts (like your poor spelling) have never been your strong point. Stick to your fanatasies about how great the DJIA is (while it has not even recovered to where it was BEFORE Bunnypants took office?

"The NIE was the product of a tainted intellectual environment or so Paul Pillar, then the CIA's national intelligence officer for Near East and South Asia, argued more than three years later in a Foreign Affairs article. Pillar, a thoughtful, scholarly analyst with degrees from Oxford, Dartmouth, and Princeton, anguished over his own role in the CIA's handling of the prewar intelligence. It was clear that the Bush administration would frown on or ignore analysis that called into question a decision to go to war and welcome analysis that supported such a decision, he wrote. Intelligence analysts felt a strong wind consistently blowing in one direction. The desire to bend with such a wind is natural and strong, even if unconscious." [Michael Isikoff and David Corn, Hubris]
I am sure you are reading the wrong Hubris. There is no shredding of the NIE in the book?
I think you might not understand what a factual narrative means? The authors tell us what others said - those are factual references and they say who said those things.
Back to the 8th grade spelling AND 8th grade understanding? Maybe another run at the 8th grade for our "captain of industry"?

"In the end, the actual wording of the NIE probably didn't matter. By the time it was written, the Bush White House had already made extensive use of the faulty intelligence that had been packaged in the estimate. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Wolfowitz, and other administration officials had ignored the disputes (where they existed) and hardly questioned the limited (and flawed) intelligence that had been produced.", [Michael Isikoff and David Corn, Hubris]

'Devil' in the Eye of the Beholder
It was Limbaugh in 2001 who routinely referred to Democratic leader Tom Daschle, literally, as "El Diablo." Along with "Devil in a Blue Dress" theme music, Limbaugh would carry on at length about how Daschle may well be Satan in soft-spoken disguise.
Bellowed Limbaugh in July 2001: "Just yesterday, as Bush winged his way to Europe on a crucial mission to lead our allies into the 21st century...up pops 'El Diablo,' Tom Daschle, and his devilish deviltry, claiming that George Bush is incompetent." (Months later, Limbaugh started describing Daschle more as a traitor than a devil, who'd decided to "align himself with Iran, North Korea and Hussein.")
Also incensed by Chavez was MSNBC host and former GOP Congressman, Joe Scarborough -- who last night played a lengthy excerpt of Limbaugh pontificating about the Chavez remarks. Somehow Scarborough couldn't dig up the tapes of Limbaugh declaring that Daschle was the devil.

'Dummy vendors' reap $362m in Iraq
US government agencies charged with the reconstruction of Iraq allocated $362m to non-existent "dummy vendors", according to a report by the watchdog overseeing the reconstruction effort.
Stuart Bowen, the special inspector-general, said his review of the government's allocation of the $18.2bn fund found 96 incidents of cash being earmarked for projects that did not identify a vendor or contractor. The findings come just one week before the expiration of the reconstruction fund, at which point whatever remains will be returned to the Treasury. Mr Bowen said the government had $826m in remaining funds. Stephanie Kirchgaessner, Washington

And finally tonight, a Special Comment about President Clinton's interview. The headlines about them are, of course, entirely wrong. It is not essential that a past President, bullied and sandbagged by a monkey posing as a newscaster, finally lashed back.
It is not important that the current President's "portable public chorus" has described his predecessor's tone as "crazed."
Our tone should be crazed. The nation's freedoms are under assault by an administration whose policies can do us as much damage as Al-Qaeda; the nation's "marketplace of ideas" is being poisoned, by a propaganda company so blatant that Tokyo Rose would've quit. Nonetheless.
The headline is this: Bill Clinton did what almost none of us have done, in five years. He has spoken the truth about 9/11, and the current presidential administration.

The last bit from the post above:
The "free pass" has been withdrawn, Mr. BushÉ
You did not act to prevent 9/11.
We do not know what you have done, to prevent another 9/11.
You have failed us Ñ then leveraged that failure, to justify a purposeless war in Iraq which will have, all too soon, claimed more American lives than did 9/11.
You have failed us anew in Afghanistan.
And you have now tried to hide your failures, by blaming your predecessor.
And now you exploit your failure, to rationalize brazen torture Ñ which doesnÕt work anyway; which only condemns our soldiers to water-boarding; which only humiliates our country further in the world; and which no true American would ever condone, let alone advocate. And there it is, sir:
Are yours the actions of a true American?
IÕm K.O., good night, and good luck.

David,
Just finished another chapter, 17, of HUBRIS!
When Plamegate was happening, I blew it by and mostly ignored it. But finds that "popular conservative blogger Glen Reynolds' comment then, on the Wilson's fondness for publicity, are exactly what I would've said: "Sorry-if you're realy an undercover spy....Unless perhaps, you're a self-promoter first, and a spy second. Or your husband is."
Even more pointed and funny comment from Tim Noah of Slate: "Plame's extended striptease, enthusiastically barked by her husband, now has.....wondering when the couple will start renting themselves out for birthday parties."
And from dumbo Wilson himself, defending the 2-page photo spread w/Valerie in Vanity Fair: "I saw no reason to deprive ourselves of the pleasure of being photographed together as the Happily married couple that we are." Well, shit! This man is so full of it, no wonder the WH wanted to out him as an idiot and lier!
Thanks for this giggle part on Joe Wilson. It maybe old rehash, but it's fresh Tues. Night Funnies for me! I know you had to be gentle with your friend and as a prelude to the Pope's recent tiff w/crazies, quote 3rd parties as an indirect way to show just what a showboat Wilson is! Now, tell us, you and Joe cooked this whole thing up, right? Just kidding (sort of)!

Negroponte Says U.S. Not at Higher Risk
WASHINGTON (AP) -- National Intelligence Director John Negroponte said Monday the jihad in Iraq is shaping a new generation of terrorist operatives, but rejected assertions, stemming from a leaked intelligence estimate, that the United States is at a greater risk of attack than it was in 2001.
"We are certainly more vigilant. We are better prepared," Negroponte said. "We are safer."
Negroponte's words came at a dinner at Washington's Woodrow Wilson Center after the weekend disclosure of a high-level National Intelligence Estimate. The document gave new fervor to an election-year debate about how the Iraq war has affected national security threats.
The report, Negroponte said, broadly addressed the global terrorist threat, not just the impact of Iraq.
He told the audience that radicalism is being fueled by entrenched grievances in the Arab world, the slow pace of social and political reforms there and anti-U.S. sentiment.
In addition, he said, "The Iraq jihad is shaping a new generation of terrorist leaders and operatives."

It has gotten confusing for me a few times when David or the web wizards change the most recent post. Although I knew where some missing posts had gone.
It also is confusing with the first "Changes to:" post because the "less than" character made the "Previous - Main" and "Previous - Main - Next" text not to show.

White House admits Iraq fuels extremism
[..]
On Sunday, the New York Times quoted an official familiar with the report, entitled "Trends in Global Terrorism: Implications for the United States," as saying that "the Iraq war has made the overall terrorism problem worse."
That contradicts frequent speeches by Bush ahead of November 7 legislative elections, in which the unpopular war in Iraq may cost his Republican party control of one or both houses of the US Congress.
The Washington Post said the report described the Iraq conflict as the primary recruiting vehicle for violent Islamic extremists.
While the US has seriously damaged Al-Qaeda and disrupted its ability to carry out major operations since the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington, it noted, radical Islamic networks have spread and decentralized.

Happy,
Please note that the Good Captain is as devoid of original thought as one's average mushroom. He spends an inordinate amount of time in front of the computer monitor, quoting others and pontificating on the ills of the world, especially America's.
Instead of venturing out into the world, trying to make a difference, he languishes in the miasma of his own self pity, ensconced in a chair, impotent and angry. He does nothing, yets faults others who at least try.
He has found his Hyde Corner on this blog, crawling incessantly up onto his metaphorical soapbox to preach to the real achievers of the world, hectoring them on their evil ways.
It is the manifestation of his failure in life that he envies those in this world who succeed.
It would be easy to condemn him as a traitor and a coward; instead he is to be pitied for his truly wretched existence, an existence devoid of hope, devoid of joy, devoid of original thought, devoid of achievement.

Are We Mice or Men?
Only last month, Steven Clemons blogged about a youtube video entitled "UAV Hunter Payload." Seems as if when viewers watched this video, at least one noticed the coordinates placed the drone over Iran. Illegally, by the way. An act of war, by any measure. By the time I got there, one day later, the video had been "removed by user." Porn clips on Youtube have a longer shelflife than proof of acts of war committed by Washington elites and simple-minded Presidents.
It's all very interesting. We can wait and wonder, or we can heed Daniel Ellsberg's call. If you can't be inside the Pentagon, encourage those you know inside that system to do the right thing, the constitutional thing, the productive thing. The American people don't want war or the destruction of Iran. We don't want to be responsible for even more hatred and rage in a strange and alien place most never intend to retire to, or even visit. We certainly don't want to be sent the bill for this administration's desire for destruction and the nervously salivating Congress's desire to be seen as something, anything, but what they are.
I hope that multitudinous stray forces for good will change what has become the American way of war lie, bomb, embezzle, repeat. I hope that perhaps before or after November, we the people will be able to say the administration's designs have been "removed by user." I'd like to think an outpouring of truth will begin to restore our country's heart and soul.
I hope like a mouse hopes, to find a bite to eat while not becoming one. It seems to me we need to ask ourselves, as Daniel Ellsberg has effectively asked, "Are we mice?" Or are we men? Sadly, we shall see.

On which he was laid
Ooooh, what a lucky man he was
Ooooh, what a lucky man he was

What is interesting Capt, is that so much is suddenly coming out. Chalk it to the extremes the GOP goes to, the election season, people finally having it up to here etc. I firmly believe Hubris and Fiasco and Blumenthal's book etc. are the instigating factors. Clinton finally losing his temper lit some fires. Good for him!
The horrible thing about all of this is it won't do any good. Iran, Iran, Iran. This is an abyss we will not escape from for a very long time. Maybe never. I'm not trying to sound pessimistic, but Lord I don't see much hope if this happens. Not for an extremely long time. I couldn't sleep from despair so I came here.

PM says Bush won't allow nuclear Iran
US President George W. Bush will stop the Iranians from getting a nuclear bomb, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert stated with certainty during an interview with The Jerusalem Post on Monday.
Olmert's comments come amid a debate raging in Jerusalem about whether the US will eventually take military action to stop the Iranian march to nuclear capability, whether Israel might have to act on its own, and whether Jerusalem should reconcile itself to a nuclear Iran.
Asked whether he felt that Bush would, one way or another, stop Iran from going nuclear, Olmert replied succinctly, "I believe so."

Iran blames Russians for N-plant delays
TEHRAN (Reuters) - A senior Iranian nuclear official on Monday blamed Russian contractors for delays in building Iran's first nuclear power plant, saying they lacked the required "technical capabilities", a news agency reported.
But hours later in Moscow, the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation, Gholamreza Aghazadeh, made clear that despite his grievances, nuclear cooperation with Moscow would continue and possibly expand.
The Bushehr power plant in southwest Iran was supposed to start up in early 2006 but has faced several delays. Sergei Kiriyenko, the head of Russia's atomic energy agency, said this month that it was now likely to start up in September 2007.
"I believe the current contractor lacks the necessary technical capabilities," Aghazadeh was quoted by students news agency ISNA as saying shortly before leaving for Moscow.
"It was clear from the beginning that it (the contractor) was incapable, but we had to sign with the Russian contractor because we had no other alternative," he said, adding that construction could be completed in six months.

#40 Carey, here are some concerns of mine.
Americans seem to have lost their moral compass of knowing right and wrong.
Americans seem to be in denial about mass murders, war crimes, torture, and the lies of Bush.
Americans are silent in such areas of rigged elections, death and destruction in foreign lands and the loss of our men and women and all human life, and the loss of our freedoms and rights.
Americans do not show any outrage regarding Bush and his endless lies, bait and switch tactics, and smoke and mirrors practices.
These are only some concerns and I believe patriotic Americans can find many more concerns.
I need to sleep for now!

Olberman, may well be the last broadcast journalist I respect.
He has, several times now spoken my thoughts more eloquently than I probably could, and I for one felt SUCH relief.
I am NOT ALONE.
WE ARE NOT ALONE.

Impeach a lot of them. Bush, Chaney, Rummy, Brenner, Wolfy, etc. Stop covicting privates.
Convict the Chain of Command, if you can find anyone who knew what the hell it was.
This "deal" that was ironed out between Bush and his supposedly opposing Republicans, gave him exactly what he sought, retroactive immunity for war crimes under the Geneva Convention. And the ability to "redact" sensitive data from trials of detainees.

You have to be realistic about terrorism. Certain groups of people, certain groups, Muslim fundamentalists, Christian fundamentalists, Jewish fundamentalists, and just plain guys from Montana, are going to continue to make life in this country very interesting for a long, long time.

Titchie,
Olbermann was named "Truthdigger of the Week" by Robert Scheer's newsletter "Truthdig".
He's become quite something hasn't he? Our troops are getting bigger and bigger. Let's just hope they don't fire Olbermann for this.
Carol is a perverse person who just cheered me up quite a bit. Thank you sweetie.

I got to work this morning only to be deluged by "hey Johnny did you see your man Bubba get his ass handed to him on Fox News"? I was caught a little off guard; I actually was working around the homestead this weekend, and hadnÕt watched one single minute of T.V. "news". In fact I wasn't even aware that my man Jeff Burton had won his first "Cup" race since 2001. But I never turn down the opportunity for a good argument, especially when the potential opponents are my often uninformed, faux watching, never served in the military, right-wing kookoo co-workers. So I replied: what happened? He answered "Oh Chris Wallace (faux news) asked bubba why he didn't get Bin Laden, and Bubba went off and got all pissed off" Not knowing anything about this I calmly answered: "why wouldn't President Clinton get pissed? Who the hell is Chris Wallace? Did he ask why bu$hco hasn't got Bin Laden?" Well (my co-worker answered) "thatÕs not the point, bubba didn't look very presidential, he lost his cool" Again I calmly answered: ÒBill Clinton is not the president anymore, he hasnÕt been president for quite some time, correct me if IÕm wrong but G.W has been president for the past six years, six years that have included:
3,000 dead American citizens killed in the worst terror attack ever.
2,703 dead American soldiers killed in Iraq.
19,945 wounded American soldiers in Iraq.
43,426 dead Iraqi civilians.
My co-worker replied: Òyeah but if Clinton hadnÕt been so busy getting his dick sucked, none of that would have happened.Ó

Uncledad,
That is so cool you hit on the right marks without seeing the piece. The fake arguments from their side have become way too predictable.
Good show!

Howdy Capt.
You know I'm not trying to be cool; I am just trying to understand why people argue such ridiculous points. I guess cause they see it on T.V. The sad thing is, Jeff Burton really did win at Dover, and is leading the points, but all we seem to talk about is war and hate, have we lost the war? What war? Sometimes I think the neoconsuperfratboy's won't be satisfied until our great nation is forced to behave like Israel, hated by our neighbors, constant surveillance, no more fun, only war, walls and religion.

"You know I'm not trying to be cool"
That thought never crossed my mind.
I mean I do know you are not trying to be cool. That would be uncool.

OMG! Whoa! Just watched the DVR of Keith Olbermann's special comment tonight thanks to Capt.'s suggestion.
Well there go the dull-drums! Jesus, he has gotten so powerful in his commentary, I hope he's not canned. Kirk, you must link this for people tomorrow. It's another must-see.
How do you like them apples? I'll be darned. Olbermann went for the jugular like a panther tearing into a gazelle.
I have to be up at 5 am. My son's school starts at 7:30, an ungodly hour. Nite.

U.S. gets Sovietized
We have seen America's president and vice president, sworn to uphold the Constitution, advocating some of the same interrogation techniques the KGB used at the Lubyanka. They apparently believe beating, freezing, sleep deprivation and near-drowning are necessary to prevent terrorist attacks. So did Stalin.
The White House insisted that anyone including Americans could be kidnapped and tried in camera using "evidence" obtained by torturing other suspects. Bush & Co. deny the U.S. uses torture but reject the basic law of habeaus corpus and U.S. laws against the evil practice. The UN says Bush's plans violate international law and the Geneva Conventions.
This week's tentative agreement between Bush and Congress may somewhat limit torture, but exempts U.S. officials from having to observe the Geneva Convention.

Domestic spying, gulags, torture, etc. this is not America.
Anybody else wonder why the torture issue has been between three GOP senators and the WH and no Democratic party members involved? Where are the Dem's on this issue?

capt, that factchucker creature has the gall to pass out judgements on the people here after declaring that he would like to see the members of a certain race of people murdered in large quantities? Who could possibly spend one second contemplating anything he has to say? UGH!
uncledad, the only argument bushbots have is to blame someone else. It's what they do everytime any criticism of bush looms. What else CAN they do? bushco is indefensible, denial is all that's left for the pitiful, dwindling supporters of that lunatic.
