Bush at the UN

I posted this in my "Capital Games" column at www.thenation.com....

When George W. Bush addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, he glowingly referred to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted by the UN in 1948. He said:

This morning, I want to speak about the more hopeful world that is within our reach, a world beyond terror, where ordinary men and women are free to determine their own destiny, where the voices of moderation are empowered, and where the extremists are marginalized by the peaceful majority. This world can be ours if we seek it and if we work together.

The principles of this world beyond terror can be found in the very first sentence of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This document declares that "the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom and justice and peace in the world."

One of the authors of this document was a Lebanese diplomat named Charles Malik, who would go on to become president of this assembly. Mr. Malik insisted that these principles applied equally to all people, of all regions, of all religions, including the men and women of the Arab world that was his home.

In the nearly six decades since that document was approved, we have seen the forces of freedom and moderation transform entire continents....The words of the Universal Declaration are as true today as they were when they were written.

That is some endorsement. But how familiar is Bush with the entire document? Let's start with Article 5:

No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

Bush claims that his adminsitration has not tortured any terrorist suspect. But that claim has been challenged. (In the book I co-wrote with Michael Isikoff, Hubris, we recount the tale of a captured al Qaeda commander handed over by the CIA to Egyptian authorities, who was aggressively questioned--perhaps tortured--and provided false information linking Saddam Hussein to al Qaeda. This information was then used by Colin Powell during his now infamous UN speech before the invasion of Iraq.)

Article 7:

All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law.

Terrorist suspects detained as enemy combatants by the United States were not afforded equal protection of the law.

Article 9:

No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile.

The Bush White House has argued that the president has the power to arrest and detain anyone suspected of being an enemy combatant and that a detainee can be held as long as the president deems fit, without any due process. The Supreme Court, though, has not gone along with that view.

Article 10:

Everyone is entitled in full equality to a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal, in the determination of his rights and obligations and of any criminal charge against him

Did Bush's original idea of using a military tribunal to try suspected terrorists jibe with this provision? Is his current proposal to try detainees with secret evidence in sync with this article?

Article 12:

No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.

Bush keeps insisting on the right to wiretap people--including American citizens (under certain circumstances)--without a warrant, not even a secret warrant. As for the right not to have one's honor and reputation assailed, the drafters of this declaration must have forgotten to put in a clause exempting the targets of political campaigns.

Article 30:

Noting in this Declaration may be interpreted as implying for any State, group or person any right to engage in any activity or to perform any act aimed at the destruction of any of the rights and freedoms set forth herein

In other words, not even a wartime president gets a pass. So did Bush read this document before he praised it? Or was he just reading a speech?

Here's another little gem from Wayne Madsen:

"Our intelligence sources in Lebanon have reported to us exclusively that Israel is now using poison gas and depleted uranium shells on towns in the south of Lebanon. Residents of the small village of Kasarshoba became violently ill, experiencing severe vomiting, after the Israelis hit the village with poison gas.

In other cases, underground shelters in southern Lebanon were hit by Israeli depleted uranium shells. Our sources also report that the entire southern suburbs of southern Beirut, with a population of 800,000, have been totally depopulated. Israel has targeted thousands of civilian homes for destruction."

Now, which liberals are claiming him?

David, I think it would be fair to say that he was "just reading a speech."

As he has demonstrated, time and again, he will say anything for a desired effect, then disregard his own words and do whatever the hell he pleases. Afterall, he is "The Decider."

Mr. David Corn,

Excellent post!

Bush does not care about what he says and does not follow any law. He will just make a signing statement and do as he pleases. We have to stop him but alas the only thing that might slow him down are the GOPhers.

Thanks for all of your work.

DAVID,
YOU HAVE DONE IT!!!
You have reported on some of the most important issues regarding the torture debate. The rights of individuals to know what they are accused of is something we can not let slip from our grasp. And it is something Bush wants abolished. The American people need to know what is disappearing from their lives. We need to challenge the validity of Bush's argument.

Maybe some don't care about the rights of those in GITMO but what have those people done? Do the American people know that? Are those men terrorists? Are they? Was Maher Arar of Canada a terrorist when he got shipped off to Syria? No, he wasn't. George Bush and Co want to take away the rights from people who have done nothing wrong. He talks of freedoms and rights and this is what he is doing.

Read the words of Michael Ratner who was on Democracy Now today. It is chilling.

MICHAEL RATNER: I have been appalled that for five years I’m living in a country that is openly torturing people and essentially proud of it. And despite that, there has been basically pipsqueaks out of the press and out of Congress. You don't see them saying, “Stop this. Stop this. Stop this.”

AMY GOODMAN: Michael Ratner, we just have ten seconds. But whatever comes out, with the bill out of the Senate, out of the Congress, couldn't President Bush just sign a signing statement, as he's done more than 800 times, and not abide by whatever it was that was passed?

MICHAEL RATNER: He could certainly do a signing statement, like you said, and say, “I’m not going to enforce this bill. I’m still going to torture people.” It would be unconstitutional. It would be illegal. It would be essentially a war crime to do it, in my view. But the way this president has gone, my belief is that he has committed war crimes.

All we really need is a president that stifles his feelings of empathy. You stupid, compassionate libruls don't know how the terrorists work. They don't care about anything. They would just as easily blow up a bus as they would rape a bunny. The only way to defeat these islamofascist creeps is to elect a leader that is just as heartless as they are. It is only by showing the terrorists just how nasty and vile we can be that we shall win this war on terror. You goofy lefties don't know that this is the war OF terror, the goal of which is to scare the shit out of the bloodthirsty islamists by being horrible and cruel to arabs and other ragheads - even if they didn't "do" anything to us. Torture done in the name of freedom isn't torture, it's called "liberty cuddling". If we scare them more than they scare us, we win. Oh, and it doesn't count that we scare ourselves, as that's just necessary to get you to look the other way as we rape this cute little innocent bunny.

Touche, fatty was had. It is pathetic. The Pope should have known better than to say these things in an age when their is so much prejudice in the world. Certainly, the Pope, who is a human being can relate to the stink that this would cause. He was out of line and didn't make the kind of apology that sounds sincere. ------------- As far as the Fox newsmen - they should have planned better - if that was at all possible. This is a war.

Maher Arar: Timeline

Maher Arar, a Canadian citizen born in Syria in 1970, came to Canada in 1987. After earning bachelor's and master's degrees in computer engineering, Arar worked in Ottawa as a telecommunications engineer.

On a stopover in New York as he was returning to Canada from a vacation in Tunisia in September 2002, U.S. officials detained Arar, claiming he has links to al-Qaeda, and deported him to Syria, even though he was carrying a Canadian passport.

When Arar returned to Canada more than a year later, he said he had been tortured during his incarceration and accused American officials of sending him to Syria knowing that they practise torture.

His wife Monia Mazigh has a PhD in financial economics and ran for the NDP in the 2004 federal election in the riding of Ottawa South. She lost. Arar and Mazigh have two young children. In the summer of 2006, the family relocated to Kamloops, B.C., where Mazigh took a teaching position at Thompson Rivers University.

Arar and his family are seeking compensation from the federal government for his abrupt deportation and imprisonment in Syria. Judge Dennis O'Connor, who conducted the inquiry into the matter, recommended in his report dated Sept. 18, 2006 that Ottawa pay up.
------------
How many men, how many families will be seeking damages for damages such as were inflicted on Maher Arar? How many are out there? Does anybody know?

I almost choked when Bush said "the voices of moderation are in power" Heaven help us.

Today on Npr's Talk of the Nation they did a program on the UN. It was if Neil Conan was reading a press release from the Bush administration on Iran's "alleged" desire to have nuclear weapons. The program focused on Iran most of the time ( I bet they said Iran 25 times).

I tried to get through with of course what I believed to be a damn good question about "how the U.s. and Israel have undermined the Un in many circumstances but mainly in regard to demanding that Israel abide by Un resolutions themselves. And that Israel is in violation of more UN resolutions than any other nation, yet Israel and the U.s. persistently demand that other nations abide by Un resolutions all of the time. That it is this double standard that continues to infuritate many in the middle east. The screener told me she thought this was a great question had me hold on and then came back and said the producer decided not to take this question and that they would be bringing this issue up. Neil Conan mentioned the conflict once to cover his ass . (being able to say he mentioned it once means fair and balanced reporting to NPR

Many of the other world leaders that spoke today addressed how the ongoing Israeli/Palestinian conflict is the root cause of the problems in the middle east. (how many times can they say this)

I become more convinced all the time that NPR and other media outlets unwillingness to address this issue in a balanced and accurate way is one of the biggest reasons the conflict is not dealt with honestly.

Think about it not one news outlet in the U.s. covered the Assembly today for the American Public. Only proving once again the MSM does not want to report what other nations have to say and the American public seems to care less. If they had made an effort to air the assembly the American people would have heard nations saying that the Israeli/palestinian conflict is the root of the problem in the middle east.

Go listen to the Talk of the Nation today for yourself count how many times they say Iran

Bush lays out Mideast peace plan at U.N.

President says Iran should return to nuclear talks or face consequences

Part of Sept. 11 anniversary series

Bush's speech was the last in a series on the war on terror, timed to surround last week's fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks and to set the tone for the final weeks of the U.S. midterm elections.

Bush was speaking in the same room where four years and one week ago he made another plea for action in the Middle East. On that day, Bush said Saddam Hussein had stockpiles of deadly chemical and biological agents that the United Nations must confront.

He was wrong, but still forged ahead with war against Iraq without the support of many other nations. And he is still trying to rebuild credibility with the body, experts say.

"The sense outside of the U.S. is that the United States is responsible for many of the failures in Iraq, first by going in mostly alone and then by incompetent administration," said Jon Alterman, a Mideast expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

"The problem with the way he's talked about democracy in the Middle East is not that people see it as undesirable," Alterman said, "it's that people see it as naive. He needs to persuade cynical people that not only is he sincere, but it's achievable, and here's what they need to do to make it so."

Urgent news from Abu Dawood, one of the newly appointed commanders of the al Qaeda forces in Afghanistan:

Final preparations have been made for the American Hiroshima, a major attack on the U. S.

Muslims living in the United States should leave the country without further warning.

The attack will be commandeered by Adnan el Shukrijumah ("Jaffer Tayyer" or "Jafer the Pilot"), a naturalized American citizen, who was raised in Brooklyn and educated in southern Florida.

The al Qaeda operatives who will launch this attack are awaiting final orders. They remain in place in cities throughout the country. Many are masquerading as Christians and have adopted Christian names.

There is just not enough true patriotic Americans to help to do any good in our country and in the world. I predict that Bush will drop nuclear bombs and missiles on Iran before January, 2007 and that Bush will declare martial before the 2008 elections and claim the kingship over America and Americans. Happy days are ahead for the Nazis and the Nazi religious right. My Nazi in-laws will feel safe and secure as they frolic in their pool filled with money.

The Daily Show has responded to Bob Novak's criticism of The Daily Show with a scorching indictment of Novak's professionalism and his public personality by host Jon Stewart.

On a recent broadcast of C-SPAN's Washington Journal, Novak described Jon Stewart as "a self-riotous comedian taking on airs of grandeur." Novak admits he's never seen the show.

Stewart seems to hold back nothing in severely mocking Bob Novak. Stewart looks into the camera, as if speaking directly to Bob Novak and says, "I know you have redeeming qualities. For example, when you're on television you let others shine. While you, generously, absorb all light and oxygen. When you leave an area it stops raining. And I know, in the past I referred to you as a 'douche bag'..."

part of Iranian President Ahminijad's speech at the Un on Saturday @global security. "Mr. President, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, "Today, more than ever, nations need constructive, positive and honest cooperation and interaction in order to enjoy a dignified, tranquil and peaceful life based on justice and spirituality. Let us enter into a collective covenant to realize this legitimate aspiration of our nations. "Here, I would like to briefly talk about the approach and initiative of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the nuclear issue. Nuclear weapons and their proliferation, and attempts to impose an apartheid regime on access to peaceful nuclear energy, are two major threats, challenging international tranquility and peace. "Keeping in mind that in past years no serious efforts complimented by practical mechanisms -- have been made to move towards full disarmament and more specifically implement the decisions and outcomes of the NPT Review Conferences of 1995 and 2000, I suggest that the General Assembly, as the most inclusive UN organ, mandate an ad-hoc committee to compile and submit a comprehensive report on possible practical mechanisms and strategies for complete disarmament. "This Committee should also be asked to investigate as to how contrary to the NPT -- material, technology and equipment for nuclear weapons were transferred to the Zionist regime, and to propose practical measures for the establishment of a nuclear-weapons-free zone in the Middle East. "Some powerful states practice a discriminatory approach against access of NPT members to material, equipment, and peaceful nuclear technology, and by doing so, intend to impose a nuclear apartheid. "We are concerned that once certain powerful states completely control nuclear energy resources and technology, they will deny access to and thus deepen the divide between powerful countries and the rest of the international community. When that happens, we will be divided into light and dark countries. "Regrettably, in the past 30 years, no effective measure has been implemented to facilitate the exercise of the legally recognized right of NPT state-parties to have access to and use peaceful nuclear energy in accordance with article IV. Therefore, the General Assembly should ask the IAEA in accordance with article 2 of its Statute to report on violations by specific countries that have hindered the implementation of the above article and also produce practical strategies for its renewed implementation."

D.C. corruption eruption - FBI forced to triple fraud probe squads to keep up

There is so much political corruption on Capitol Hill that the FBI has had to triple the number of squads investigating lobbyists, lawmakers and influence peddlers, the Daily News has learned.
For decades, only one squad in Washington handled corruption cases because the crimes were seen as local offenses handled by FBI field offices in lawmakers' home districts.

But in recent years, the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal and other abuses of power and privilege have prompted the FBI to assign 37 agents full-time to three new squads in an office near Capitol Hill.

FBI Assistant Director Chip Burrus told The News yesterday that he wants to detail even more agents to the Washington field office for a fourth corruption squad because so much wrongdoing is being uncovered.

President Bush said today:

...the very first sentence of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This document declares that "the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom and justice and peace in the world."

David,

The opening sentence of the UN Declaration mirrors our Constitution's opening with "All men are created equal...w/inalienable rights".

Clearly, to those of us fortunate to be Americans, all of our other rights follows forth from being "created equal".

Bush is saying a solid foundation of equality must be the first step and who can argue with that? Had the world, the Muslim one being the most applicable at this time in history, achieved this foundation, would you be making your extensive snide comments?

In theory, the UN is a wonderful organization and the people of the world can be as one! But, alas, it is just ain't so.... Let's just try to do our part on the foundation part. Make no mistake, the War on Terror is very much a part of that effort!

I would be much more hopeful if Western liberals actually behaved like liberals instead of selfish wimps! I'm peeved that Conservatives & Liberals have done a complete role-switch! Personally, I'd much prefer to focus on economics and leave bettering the world's condition to the idealistic liberals of my babyhood who stood up to facism and communism.

Capt,
I believe that if a candidate gets elected by fraud that candidate will realize from the very first moment that it was the worst thing they ever could have done. Bush is illegitimate. He got by with the act of cheating the American people out of their decision and vote. The people of this nation are fed up. The acceptance will never be there again. I truly believe that. If a leader commits fraud to win he will be branded a bastard. He will never be respected. He will have problems with the electorate from the first day and the first hour. You can't govern like that.

Complaints involving anti-Muslim discrimination, harassment, and violence jumped over 30 percent in 2005 compared to 2004, according to a new report released here Monday by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim organization.
A total of 1,972 such incidents were reported in 2005. That was the highest number since CAIR began reporting anti-Muslim incidents in 1995, the year that the bombing by right-wing extremists of the federal government building in Oklahoma City, blamed initially by the mass media on Arab radicals, set off a rash of anti-Muslim attacks.
CAIR said it had also received 153 reports of anti-Muslim hate crimes, an increase of nearly 10 percent over 2004, and more than 50 percent over the 93 reports received in 2003.
"It is clear that there remains a growing atmosphere of fear and hostility toward American Muslims, Arab-Americans, and South Asians," this year's report concluded, noting that recent public opinion surveys have likewise shown a rise in anti-Muslim sentiment among the general public here.

Hey! Mission well on the way to accomplished! This will be welcome news to the "kill them in large numbers" crowd! I have been watching the series "Lost" on DVD, they have an Iraqi that is portrayed as not only physically beautiful but very intelligent and empathetic. His character is someone who you could really call a friend. I have to say, I found it refreshing that an MSM series would be so open-minded towards the "enemy." Anyone who likes good drama would enjoy this show, no commercials if you rent it!

Military coup tumbles Thailand's Thaksin

BANGKOK - Caretaker Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was ousted in a military coup on Tuesday evening, marking what appears to be a dramatic end to a political stalemate that has pitched the embattled politician against an opposition movement backed by conservative elements close to the Thai palace.

Troops loyal to Thai army commander General Sonthi Boonyaratklin, a palace loyalist, led the army-led putsch and surrounded Government House and parliament with tanks and troops. Thaksin, who was traveling in the United States, attempted to declare "a severe state of emergency" from New York and ordered Sonthi removed from his command.

As of midnight Thailand time, there was no indication that army officers loyal to Thaksin intended to enforce the caretaker prime ministerճ orders to remove Sonthi. A source close to Sonthi said that they were locked in late-night negotiations with military officials loyal to Thaksin, including from the Bangkok-based 4th Cavalry Division, to avoid bloodshed.

Paradox

Louis Tice of the Pacific Institute in Seattle, Washington offers a paradox, "You give up control in order to be in control". Confident leaders do not have to rule by controlling and punitive threats. He also discusses Erickson's book, "Eight Stages of Human Development", regarding leadership. Leadership starts at the top with basic trust. A dishonest leader cannot be an effective leader. Controlling and punitive threats will have consequences and there will be a backlash against such a leader. People will subtly undermine the leader and in the end the leader is not in control and he or she remains in a constant state of fear. A fearful leader is an unstable leader. Good examples of fearful and unstable leaders are Napoleon and Hitler. We must be vigilant of such leaders, be it in the United States or in the world.

Please pay careful attention to Bush's behavior. You do not have to be a licensed psychiatrist or a Ph.D. psychologist to know that Bush is a very sick person. His increased temper tantrums, his abusive language, his flying all over the country, and his apparent alcoholism and drug intake are signs that Bush is losing it. We have in the WH a very unstable beast that could snap at any minute. We must never forget this psychoճ depraved indifference in the murdering of human beings. Pray hard for this demented and deranged amoeba!

Basic Trust

I have shared with you some information regarding a paradox. I will now stress the importance of basic trust in the eight stages of human development. The Bush misadministration has been a very secretive cabal because Bush does not possess basic trust which should have been instilled in his formative years. He and his brothers have nicknamed their mother, "Nutcracker." This nickname should be quite revealing to you. Everything the misadministration does is done in secret. Some secrecy in government is necessary but with Bush it is an obsession of a sick person.

The eighth stage and the last stage is integrity. Integrity is reached about the age of forty-five. For a person to reach integrity everything starts with basic trust. You pass through the various stages. In Bush's life age forty-five is about the time he found God and said that he would not be a drunk. A dozen years later he becomes president through fraud and rigged elections. Bush is a nutcase but more seriously he displays a depraved indifference toward living human beings. It is my perceptual opinion that Bush is close to becoming an insane person. He is too sick to lead a democracy. He will do all in his power to bring down American democracy. Everything that he touches becomes demented and deranged. You see as Americans the unraveling of insane policies from an insane or close to insane person.

Leadership

Coach K, the head coach of Duke, says that the most important word for leadership is trust. If you do not trust the leadership, how can a person lead?

Can you honestly say that you trust Bushitler? There is no way Bushitler can be trusted. His incessant lies make it impossible for him to be trusted. Many Americans are beginning to realize that Bushitler is a liar. His whole life has been one big lie from his appointment as president to his failed war policies. We can also add failure to his name in addition to liar.

The devil incarnate nation has a lying failed despotic dictator controlling our failed and miserable country. Nazi Americans are mirror images of Bushitler.

Everything starts with basic trust. Without basic trust a person cannot reach the final stage of integrity. In Erickson's, "The Eight Stages of Human Development," he stresses the importance of basic trust.

US Treasury Sets New 1-Day Tax Receipt Record Of $85.8 Billion

Tuesday September 19th, 2006 / 0h04

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- The U.S. government recorded record-high overall and corporate tax receipts on Sept. 15, which was a quarterly deadline for tax payments, the Treasury said Monday.
Total tax receipts were $85.8 billion on Friday, compared with the previous one-day record of $71 billion on Sept. 15 of last year, the Treasury said.
Within the overall figure, corporate tax receipts Friday were $71.8 billion, up from $63 billion in September of last year.
Treasury Undersecretary for Domestic Finance Randal Quarles said Friday's numbers provided a "continuing demonstration of the strength of the U.S. economy."
"In fact, Friday's gross receipts were the largest in a single day in the nation's history - 20% higher than receipts on the same quarterly tax payment date last year," Quarles said in a statement.

Jeanne,

You had asked me a specific question: How will Muslims be seen as humans? The answers are as follows:

When they quit calling for the death of the Pope because he questioned their commitment to peace.

When they quit flying airplanes into American buildings.

When they quit dancing in the streets at the sight of American deaths.

When the madrassas quit teaching/preaching the hatred of the West.

When sharia is no longer the law of the land.

When there are good and decent Muslims who stand up and cry out against the atrocities commited in the name of Islam.

When Muslims allow other religions to exist peacefully.

When Muslims allows other cultures to exist peacefully.

When Muslim men quit treating Muslim women like so much chattel.

People like Joe on this blog see extreme Islam, calling for the death of all infidels, and the extremist Christians as somehow morally equivalent. Perhaps the worst Christian and the worst Muslim are equivalent. But there are hundreds of thousands, perhaps hundreds of millions, of Muslims calling for death to all Americans. I doubt if you would find such reciprocity in America.

I hate to say it, because I have three young sons, one of whom is in the Middle East on assignment as we speak, but the status quo must not be allowed to exist.

FC,
Oh you mean like the way the Bush administration and the CIA treated Maher Arar.
Canadians Fault US for Its Role in Torture Case

government commission on Monday exonerated a Canadian computer engineer of any ties to terrorism and issued a scathing report that faulted Canada and the United States for his deportation four years ago to Syria, where he was imprisoned and tortured.

The report on the engineer, Maher Arar, said American officials had apparently acted on inaccurate information from Canadian investigators and then misled Canadian authorities about their plans for Mr. Arar before transporting him to Syria.

"I am able to say categorically that there is no evidence to indicate that Mr. Arar has committed any offense or that his activities constituted a threat to the security of Canada," Justice Dennis R. O'Connor, head of the commission, said at a news conference.

The report's findings could reverberate heavily through the leadership of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which handled the initial intelligence on Mr. Arar that led security officials in both Canada and the United States to assume he was a suspected Al Qaeda terrorist.

The report's criticisms and recommendations are aimed primarily at Canada's own government and activities, rather than the United States government, which refused to cooperate in the inquiry.

Bush's Cruel and Degrading Presidency

Washington is a moral swamp. When the chief executive can stand at the presidential podium and make an unabashed appeal for torture, then the American dream is dead.

Bush hates America and only God knows why? He's been buoyed-along his entire life on a raft of wealth and privilege; distancing himself from his endless failures, one after the other flop, flop, flop. Still, Bush wants more; another pound of flesh to inflate his battered, alcohol-saturated ego. He wants to snuff out anything that even vaguely resembles honor or decency or dignity so he can permeate the world with his own fiendish image beaming from TVs across the globe.

Who could ever have imagined the President of the United States making the case for torture like some flannel-mouth medicine man at a tent show?

"Where is your sense of decency, sir?"

I sure hope Corn folks are involved with their state elections. With a double digit lead it will be harder for them to steal the election.

New Independent Poll Shows Strickland Maintains Double Digit Lead(09.19.06)
Columbus, Ohio According to a new independent poll released today, Ohio gubernatorial candidate Congressman Ted Strickland has a 21-point lead over rival Republican state officeholder J. Kenneth Blackwell, even after millions spent in negative advertising by Blackwell and his allies.

According to the Associated Press, the Quinnipiac University poll found Strickland leading among likely Ohio voters, 55 percent to 34 percent.

The poll was taken between September 11 17 after a three-week barrage of television, print and radio negative advertising against Ted Strickland. The negative ads were launched by the Blackwell campaign, CommonSense Ohio and CommonSense 2006, political action committees that have thus far refused to release the names of its contributors.

Mr. Blackwells negative campaigning is just not working anymore, said Strickland Campaign Spokesman Keith Dailey. Ohioans are turning away from divisiveness and responding to Ted Strickland and his clear vision to turnaround Ohio.

Outrageous and Dishonest

Last year our intelligence community produced at the request of Congress a National Intelligence Estimate, which, inter alia, addressed Iran's nuclear programs. Although that 2005 NIE was highly classified, Dafna Linzer reported,

"A major U.S. intelligence review has projected that Iran is about a decade away from manufacturing the key ingredient for a nuclear weapon, roughly doubling the previous estimate of five years, according to government sources with firsthand knowledge of the new analysis.

"The carefully hedged assessments, which represent consensus among U.S. intelligence agencies, contrast with forceful public statements by the White House. Administration officials have asserted, but have not offered proof, that Tehran is moving determinedly toward a nuclear arsenal."

These children were guilty of being born in the wrong place. Just like all kids they also did not choose their religion it was choosen for them by their parents and families.

What a sad commentary for anybody so vile and small minded as to attack the children for the choices made for them? Kill all Muslims?

Sadly, we will never know if one of those children would have grown up to be a real political leader and could have been the one chance for peace in their region. Maybe one was destine to cure cancer or discover new technology. Now we will never know.

Micki --- Thanks for the update. I'm always behind the times...

In AP news which seems only to be a local paper, 30 U.S. Mayors met in Seward, Alaska for a three day conference on "Strengthening Our Cities: Mayors Responding to Global CLimate Change." Rocky Anderson, mayor of Salt Lake City is quoted as saying, "I kept expecting to see that kind of international problem-solving on the issue of global warming."

LBH Truman raised taxes during the Korean war (to pay for it) Eisenhower raised taxes to pay for WWII. These guys were at least attempting to be fiscal conservatives

Bush started an unnecessary war that our great grand children will be paying for. Tens of thousands are dead. These folks in the White House are not fiscal conservatives. Bush took a surplus and turned it into the largest deficit our nation has ever seen. These folks wanted to bankrupt the social security system (Secretary of the Treasury Paul O'neil during the first administration states in his book "The Price Of Loyalty" that he and Greenspan had plans to feed the projected social security shortfalls for the next 20 years with part of that surplus that was there after the Clinton era, as well as feed the greedy sharks that Bush had promised tax cuts during his campaign.

Paul O'neil was canned by Bush after he demanded following the money that he discovered that had gone to terroist charities from Saudi Banks.

no no no don't link funds to terroist organizations to the Carlysle group. Don't incriminate the Bush family connections.

Lbh you know it as well as (former Republican) Kevin Phillips, Paul O'Neil, Bryzinski, Schlesenger, Albright, etc. etc. . THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION IS THE BIGGEST BUNCH OF LYING, CHEATING, KILLING, CRIMINALS THIS NATION HAS EVER WITNESSED.

LBH the people that have really gotten under my skin (in a good way) are the hundreds of seniors and Vets that I have talked with..they are really scared and deeply concerned by this group and the direction of our country.

Capt,

Now it is more likely that the grief and anger over the loss of one's child will drive a survivor into the path of the first avenue for revenge, making a possible positive an almost certain double-negative...which might mulitply, but will NEVER add up to anything close to a positive.

Capt....It is so terribly sad to think about all of the innocent children and civilians that have died in the Gaza, Lebanon, Iraq, Darfur etc.

Robert Fisk has some photos that I think that every American should be forced to look at. We are so dis-connected from the brutal situation that we have helped create in the middle east.

I really want to see Bill Kristol and Rich Lowry and the rest of the radicals put on military uniforms and go put their own asses on the line.

Wave of Party Switchers Hits Republicans
By Hans Johnson
In These Times

Monday 18 September 2006

Citing extremism, more GOPers are joining the Democrats.
A trend of local, below-the-radar party-switches is undercutting Republicans as they face the sternest challenge in a decade to one-party control of Congress and several state legislatures. Such party-switching by elected officials often indicates that the label they are shedding has lost appeal and foreshadows poor performance at the polls.

Some recent switchers are exiting GOP ranks with a bang. Distorted priorities, the federal deficit and the Iraq war are common themes in their announcements. And in a direct swipe at the far-right ideology that has become a governing credo in the Bush years, they cite intolerance in the party as the chief reason for leaving.

Major State Union Switches To Lamont

One of the state's largest labor unions has dropped its endorsement of U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman and switched its support to Democratic primary winner Ned Lamont.

The switch by Council 4 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees gives Lamont his biggest boost from organized labor since the primary.

Sal Luciano, the executive director of Council 4, announced the endorsement Sunday, saying that the union wants to see a congressional delegation able to stand up to the Bush administration.

"Since the Aug. 8 primary, we paid close attention to the remarks of both men," Luciano said. "We saw Joe Lieberman moving closer and closer to Bush, while Ned Lamont held firm in his strong opposition to the direction Bush is taking us."

Such support for Lamont is better than the unions being indifferent or supporting Lieberman. I would not necessarily write Joe out of the race but every little bit helps.

Senators Want More Iraq Reports Declassified
The Associated Press

Tuesday 19 September 2006

Washington - Senators on an intelligence panel are seeking to declassify more information from two Senate reports on prewar intelligence on Iraq, saying too much was kept secret.

The bipartisan group on Tuesday asked a government commission to consider whether portions of the reports could be made public without harming national security.

It's the first time lawmakers have appealed to the Public Interest Declassification Board since it was established in 2004 as a place for members of Congress to appeal if they think federal agencies are unnecessarily classifying material in the name of national security.

The two reports, released earlier this month, concluded there was no evidence Saddam Hussein had ties with al-Qaida before the US invasion of Iraq. They also found that Saddam's regime did not have weapons of mass destruction and was not actively seeking to acquire them.

Senators Reject WH Torture Deal

A White House "compromise" on detainee treatment was rejected by a trio of senior lawmakers today, as Republicans continue to fight among themselves over an issue that was meant to boost their sagging poll numbers in an election year.

The White House continues to push for a new law to allow painful and humiliating treatment of terror detainees, as well as new powers to prosecute them outside of established judicial processes.

Sens. John Warner (R-VA), Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and John McCain (R-AZ) back a bill that sets stricter limits on detainee treatment and prosecution.

After the three men turned down the White House's compromise bill, an unnamed Senate aide calclulated the odds of both sides reaching a compromise at "50-50," CNN reported.

The group is expected to send a counter-proposal to the White House soon. Of course, they have something the White House doesn't: time. None of the three lawmakers face re-election battles, and control of the Senate is unlikely to be swayed by the outcome of this particular fight, so they could take their time in negotiating with the White House during these last two weeks of the session.

They are areas where Muslims either cannot get along with their neighbors or are actively engaged in murdering any infidels who dare oppose them! People need to understand that Islam IS the religion of conquest, bloodshed and subjugation. History teaches us that at the height of their power as they conquered country after country, the populace had to pay huge sums for "protection" if they were not Muslim. Entire countries converted to Islam to avoid the prospect of being beheaded. And what are they doing today, hmmmmmm?

Waking Nightmare

[..]

So the fact that the Oval Office dullard would not know what the "Great Awakening" was if Jonathan Edwards came up and slapped him across the face with a Bible does not diminish the alarming nature of Bush's Messianic pretensions. Neither does the fact that he uses these pretensions cynically and shamelessly to motivate a religious "base" that has been deliberately cultivated by the corporate elite to serve its own decidedly secular lusts for money and power. It is entirely possible to be a knowing hypocrite and a fanatic ideologue at the same time; indeed, it is often a prime requirement for national leadership. (See, for example, the history of the Soviet Union for innumerable instances of this trait.) And it is entirely possible for a fatuous, overgrown frat boy to plunge the nation and the world into a literal hell of death and ruin by viewing reality through the lens of his self-inflated ignorance Рand shaping his reactions and policies accordingly.

The Good Captain makes a point at # 97 of all the Muslim children killed in Gaza since 6/25/06. It is my contention that most - if not all - of those deaths were directly attributable to -- Muslims.

Muslims hiding behind the skirts of women.

Muslims firing rockets from hospitals.

Muslims shooting from residences.

Muslims storing munitions in schools.

Muslims enlisting chidren in jihad.

The more I think of LBH's comparison to liberals, the more I concur. They are basically non-thinking, emotional cowards.

Just got a call from Cpl.Spanky who's working double-up patrols since the Tal Afar Bombings yesterday.

He said they'd just given over patrols in that area to the IA (Iraqi Army) a couple weeks ago.

Five guys (not in his unit) were injured not long ago. He told me to tell his mother, so he wouldn't have to.

He'd shown us pictures from patrols and where they were on a map, (an OLD one I found) of Tal Afar. He spoke of how many of the people would try to report regular crime to the Americans, but wouldn't trust the IP (Iraqi Police) OR the IA, because it is widely know that that criminals and insurgents have both those organizations as infiltrated as they can get.

"....The cityճ successes were repeatedly touted by President Bush this spring, when he said Tal Afar was a free city that gives reason for hope for a free Iraq.

Some U.S. commanders on the ground have expressed concern that the presidents' references to Tal Afar may in fact make it more of a target for insurgents....

Thank, Dumbya!

Factchecker,

I agree. Isn't it strange that no one from the left gives any credit to Israel who GAVE back the Gaza Strip and got nothing but ROCKETS in return?

In fact, Israel has a history of returning territory only to be continually attacked for their trouble!

Most of the anti-Israel crowd has been duped by the left and think the conflict is all about territory when it is not and never has been.

Kondrake: Rice and Hughes Convince Bush To Drop Islamic Fascism From Speeches

Roll Call executive editor and Fox News host Mort Kondrake included this tidbit in his most recent syndicated column:

"In a controversial move within the administration, [Undersecretary of State Karen] Hughes and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice seem to have persuaded Bush - temporarily, at least - to drop the label "Islamic fascism" from his speeches; diplomats say that Muslims hear it as an attack on their religion, thereby validating the extremists false charge that the United States is at war with Islam.

The move is a blow to conservatives, who celebrated last month when President Bush used the term several times in his speeches on terrorism. The phrase is a favorite of right-wing commentators like Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, and Sean Hannity; the AP called it "the new buzzword" for conservatives "in an election season dominated by an unpopular war in Iraq."

Jesus' last words to the church

My new friend sat silent for a time. A look of thoughtfulness settled over his face and he said, "That is a very important observation." I pressed him further. I asked, "How seriously do we want to take the commandments of Jesus? We can pray, go to church, read about him, and organize influential gatherings to lead others to him. But I think Jesus wants foremost for us to obey him by putting down our swords, renouncing violent self-defense, tearing up the just war theory, abolishing our weapons, putting an end to our wars, and becoming people of universal, nonviolent love. If we are serious about Jesus in these perilous times, we have to non-cooperate with every aspect of war."

The unarmed Christ wants his community, the church, to be a community of creative, loving nonviolence, I submit. Its God's holy gift to the world. The challenge, then, is to take him at his word.

Operation Kids goes online to help Iraqi youth
________________

A lieutenant colonel serving with the army in Tal Afar, a city of about 200,000 in northwestern Iraq, John parcels out the gifts - we call them weapons of mass affection - to soldiers under his command. They, in turn, distribute them to the kids.

Now, it's my happy task to report a proud addition to Operation Kids. As of today, the program has its own Web site: www.operationkids.info.

Eight weeks in the making, the site was designed and financed by Margie MacConnell, of Long Beach, and Jeri Livingstone, of Garden Grove. As patriotic as they are computer savvy, Jeri and Margie worked with Debbie to make the site as close to perfect as possible.

Morning after morning, night after night, the e-mails flew back and forth as they pondered the right words, designs and photos to

reflect the Operation Kids story.

The site, of course, is also designed to encourage more of you to get involved, or re-involved. For example, our postage fund, which once stood at about $5,000, is now nearly depleted. The site shows how you can help build it up again and keep the boxes flowing even if you don't send items.

I'm thinking of this as an extension of "Operation Toy Smith" that some here helped launch earlier this year. (you know who you are!)

If you're inclined to help win a few minds and touch a few hearts...give what you can, even if it is only encouragement.

OPERATION KIDS

Maybe, just maybe...

'A man with little sympathy for other faiths'

Pope Benedict is being portrayed as a naive, shy scholar who has accidentally antagonised two major world faiths in a matter of months. In fact he is a shrewd and ruthless operator, argues Madeleine Bunting - and he's dangerous

In fact, Pope Benedict XVI's short papacy has marked a significant departure from the previous pope's stance on interreligious dialogue. John Paul II made some dramatic gestures to rally world religious leaders, the most famous being a gathering in Assisi of every world faith, even African animists, to pray for world peace. He felt keenly the terrible history of Catholic-Jewish relations, and having fought with the Polish resistance to save Jews in the second world war, John Paul II made unprecedented efforts to begin to heal centuries of hostility and indifference on the part of the Catholic church to Europe's Jews. John Paul II also addressed himself to the ancient enmity between Muslims and Catholics; he apologised for the Crusades and was the first Pope to visit a mosque during a visit to Syria in 2001.

In contrast, Pope Benedict has managed to antagonise two major world faiths within a few months. The current anger of Muslims is comparable to the anger and disappointment felt by Jews after his visit to Auschwitz in May. He gave a long address at the site of the former concentration camp and failed to mention anti-semitism, and offered no apology - whether on behalf of his own country, Germany, or on behalf of the Catholic Church. He acknowledged he was a "son of the German people" ... "but not guilty on that account"; he then launched into a highly controversial claim that a "ring of criminals" were responsible for nazism and that the German people were as much their victims as anyone else. This is an argument that has long been discredited in Germany as utterly inadequate in explaining how millions supported the Nazis. Given his own involvement in the Hitler Youth movement as a boy, and his refusal to make a clean breast of the Vatican's acquiescence in the horrors of Nazism by opening its archives to historians, this was a shabby moment in Catholic history. Not for this pope those dramatic, epoch-defining gestures that made the last Pope such a significant global figure.

Even worse, in his Auschwitz address, he managed to argue in a long theological exposition that the real victims of the Holocaust were God and Christianity. As one commentator put it, he managed to claim that Jews were the "themselves bit players - bystanders at their own extermination. The true victim was a metaphysical one." This theological treatise bears the same characteristics as last week's Regensburg lecture; put at its most charitable, they are too clever by half. More plainly speaking, they indicate a deep arrogance rooted in a blinkered Catholic triumphalism which is utterly out of place in the 21st century.
