Casting a Vote for Diebold
By Rich Duprey (TMF Cop)
August 15, 2006

....The ATM and voting-machine manufacturer reported second-quarter results that revealed a 46% slide in profits from last year. This Fool, however, sees value in the shares at current prices.

While the company takes in more than 90% of its revenues from ATMs and other financial products and services, the voting-machine division has become the fastest-growing part of the business expanding by more than 123% over last year....

Part of Diebold's problem is that its image becomes wrapped up in politically charged debate. Another is that a certain Luddite contingent opposes the use of advanced computer technology to tally votes. Fearing that elections could be manipulated and undermined by hackers breaking into the system, they stand to thwart any effort to bring the electoral process into the 21st century.

....So why do I think now would be a profitable time to invest? A company with a storied, 145-year history is not to be dismissed lightly.....

Stocks score big

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Stocks rallied Tuesday on bets that the morning's mild inflation report means the Federal Reserve won't have to restart its recently paused interest-rate hiking campaign.

The Nasdaq composite (up 45.97 to 2,115.01, Charts) gained 2.2 percent. It was the third best day of the year on a point and percentage basis for the tech-fueled index.

The Dow Jones industrial average (up 132.39 to 11,230.26, Charts) gained 1.2 percent and the broader Standard & Poor's 500 (up 17.37 to 1,285.58, Charts) index climbed 1.4 percent....

WAR IS GOOD BUSINESS -- JUST ASK THE CHEERLEADING WARMONGERS!

Today, August 15, 2006, is the 1,246th day of the Iraqi conflict -- AKA bush's War of Choice.

Our war against Germany lasted 1,245 days, from Dec. 11, 1941, when both nations declared war, until May 8, 1945.

Oh, but wait! bush told us "Mission Accomplished" after only 44 days! On May 1, 2003, standing on the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln, bush lied: "Major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed."

Gee whiz. He just keeps on screwing up, and lying, and killing, and lying, and failing, and lying, and warring, and lying.

Did I mention lying?

The WSJ, on the Op-Ed page, identified Ned Lamont's `Secret Weapon': his own money!

"....his really secret weapon is one that his fellow liberals prefer not to mention out loud: Mr. Lamont could finance his own campaign."

"....And given his narrow four-point victory, he needed every dime. According to Federal Election Commission records, Mr. Lamont self-funded about $4 million.....In the crucial last three weeks, when the TV spots really started to fly, he pitched in about $1.5 million. That cash flow had more to do with Mr. Lamont's ultimate victory than all the Angry Left bloggers in America."

However, in modern times of hyper-inflating college tuitions (Freshman year, 2003, tuition was $2,700 per semester), it is hard-working and hard-earning investors that have produced the taxes to make a college education available to a far greater % of Americans than ever before!

Bush calls for sealing of Syria's borders

RAW STORY
Published: Tuesday August 15, 2006

United States President George W. Bush late yesterday reiterated earlier statements that he believes Iran and Syria are responsible for the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, before calling for the sealing of Syria's borders, RAW STORY has learned.

In a joint appearance with Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Bush stated that the administration is now operating a war on terror on three fronts: Iraq, Afghanistan and Lebanon. The president is hopeful that a UN Security Council resolution, calling for international troops to help the Lebanese central government gain control of Hezbollah-dominated areas, will take this over on this new "front".

"We must help people in both Lebanon and Israel return to their homes and begin rebuilding their lives," Bush told reporters, "without fear of renewed violence and terror."

Bush placed the blame for the violence first on Hezbollah. "Hezbollah attacked Israel, Hezbollah started the crisis," he said, "and Hezbollah suffered a defeat in this crisis."

However, Bush also asserted his belief that Hezbollah has been armed by Iran, with weapons passing through Syria. "I know they claim they didn't have anything to do with it," the President told reporters, "but sophisticated weaponry ended up in the hands of Hezbollah fighters, and many assume and many believe that that weaponry came from Iran through Syria."

The United States and ally nations plan to call for UN troops to seal off Syrian borders and ports soon after the Hezbollah resolution is considered.

The #1 reason to doubt that whole story about those Israeli soldiers being captured in Israel, because bush is promoting it. Sophisticated weaponry? What a joke. Who exactly was supplying the DU ammo and the clusterbombs to Israel? Martians? This is the same bullshit scare tactics they used as an excuse to attack Iraq, and just as false. How Syria and Iran are responsible for Israels brutal destruction of Lebanon is anyone's guess. God what a psycho.

Bush is ready to bomb Iran

Differences over war and peace
Evidence shows that business or economic beneficiaries of war, who do not have to face direct combat and death, tend to be more jingoistic than professional military personnel who will have to face the horrors of warfare. Furthermore, military professionals tend to care more about the outcome of a war and "military honor" than civilian leaders, who often represent some powerful economic interests that benefit from the business of war.

Business interests are more concerned with the profits from war and not the outcome. Very interesting! Killed and maimed human beings are just cannon fodder for business profits. That must make the Nazi backers happy.

THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF THE ZIONIST STATE OF ISRAEL?
Alan Hart at International Institute of Strategic Studies, New Civilisation debate, on Thursday, August 10, 2006.

I want to quote to you now from one of my Panorama interviews with Golda Meir. (It can be found, this quote, on the second page Volume One of my book, in the Prologue which is titled Waiting for the Apocalypse).

At a point I interrupted her to say: Prime Minister I want to be sure I understand what you're saying. You are saying that if ever Israel was in danger of being defeated on the battlefield, it would be prepared to take the region and the whole world down with it? Without the shortest of pauses for reflection, Golda replied: Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. In those days Panorama went on-air at 8 o'clock on Monday evenings. Shortly after the transmission of that interview The Times had a new lead editorial. It quoted what Golda had said to me and added its view that we had better believe her. How, actually, would the Zionist state of Israel take at least the region down with it? It would arm its nuclear missiles, target Arab capitals, then fire the missiles. Such an End-Game to the Arab-Israeli conflict, if it happened, and which I would describe as a self-fulfilled Zionist prophesy of doom, would probably take many years to play out. But the countdown to such a catastrophe would be speeded up if, as Brzezinski put it, neo-con policies continue to be pursued. If they are, and if Iran is attacked, I think that a Clash of Civilisations, Judeo-Christian v Islamic, would become unstoppable. Is there no way to stop the madness and create a New Middle East worth having? Yes...

And in summary of all that I've said this evening, what I really think it comes down to is this: The equation is a very simple one: No justice for the Palestinians = no peace for any of us.
==============
This is a very important article. I am hoping that all those who accuse me of one sided finger pointing and anti-semitism will take just a few minutes to read it, it isn't very long. The neocons in control of both Israel and the US are bringing us all to the brink. Nuclear war is unacceptable.

There was a really good report on Democracy Now on the Zionist Christians. You can read the transcript form.
The way I see it the Christians know they have lost the abortion and anti gay angle so they are trying to expand their base into the Jewish base in America. They are becoming very critical of Jews in this country who will not go along with the war in Lebanon. It won't work.

Several of us on one of our blogs, who have visited, or merely viewed this blog, came up with our version of protesting. We decided to use Liberal tactics against the Liberals. We chose the Liberal tactics of name calling and disruption, trying to make it hard for them to communicate.

The only disagreement among us was Gerald's new name. As you have probably noticed, sometimes Gerald's name doesn't get changed to, GOD SUCKS DICK. I personally, have no problem with it.

A couple members of our little group are a little more religious than others. Other than that, we agree our FREE SPEECH PROTEST is quite fun.

I bet you it will turn out to be a hoax
Despite all the revelations about the latest 'terror plot', politicians and security chiefs got it wrong before and are likely to have got it wrong now too.

Comment is free
Guardian Unlimited

The severe government-induced crisis in air travel coincided with the call by a large number of MPs for a parliamentary session to discuss the crisis in Lebanon and amid a growing discontent among different circles over the manner in which the Blair-led government had conducted itself during the Israeli war against Lebanon. More importantly, the crisis unfolded as Israel was being dealt the most humiliating defeat since it was created less than 60 years ago. I wonder too whether it is a mere coincidence that only days earlier Tony Blair was criticised widely for once again blaming Islam and the Muslims for the rise in "international terrorism".

I think we've seen enough over the past five years or so not to trust politicians and the security agencies any more when they claim a plot of some sort has been foiled. They told us nothing but untruth about Iraq's possession of weapons of mass destruction and about the alleged link between the regime of the former Iraqi president, Saddam Hussein, and al-Qaeda. They misled the public over the de Menezes affair and then over the Forest Gate fiasco.

I have a feeling that all the Muslims detained in connection with the recent police operation to foil and alleged plot are innocent and will soon be proven so. I also suspect that the entire episode has been deemed, despite its enormous cost, to be of utility to a government that is increasingly out of touch with reality and seriously short of public support and sympathy. I wonder whether this was also intended to smear the image of Islam and the Muslims at the time when the entire world can see that they are the victims of a most unjust world order dominated by the USA and the UK who both support and sponsor Israeli terrorism against Muslims in Palestine and Lebanon and who both oppress the Muslim peoples of Afghanistan and Iraq through direct occupation.
If the government is confident that it has a case against the detained Muslims then have them tried in a court of law. Instead what we are witnessing is a campaign of misinformation that deludes the public into believing that the group is guilty of what is nothing but mere suspicion and most probably false intelligence from the Pakistanis. This is not the first time, by the way, that the Pakistani authorities detain, charge, convict and extradite innocent individuals; most of the Guantanamo Bay detainees are victims of the Pakistani regime that is dying to please its friends in the White House and Whitehall at any cost. George Bush, the tyrannical leader of the oppressive world order who took delivery of the victims of his ally in Pakistan before and has kept them in the most inhumane conditions at his Cuban jail, could not conceal his malice for Islam and the Muslims by issuing his verdict against what he called "Islamic fascists". This, I'm sure would have been seen by many people as further proof of the likely innocence of these Muslims and a manifestation of the real purpose of the campaign against them, namely to blame it all on Islam and the Muslims.

One wonders who the real fascists today are. What about those who send their troops to destroy entire nations in Afghanistan and Iraq and who supply the Israelis with the most lethal weaponry ever known to humanity to kill and maim thousands of Lebanese and Palestinian men, women and children?
==========
I think that about covers it. All this terror and war benefits the true axis of evil, Britain, America and Israel. The rest is bullshit. The important question, who profits? Sure as hell not the Muslim people.

What happened during the last battle?
By ANSHEL PFEFFER

JPost

The battalion had seen its first action on Friday, when two of its soldiers were badly wounded. It was taken out for a short rest of 10 hours on Shabbat and went back in again that night. According to the procedure designed not to expose the troops to anti-tank missile fire, they went in on foot, the medics carrying 40-kilo loads on a 15-km. night march to the advanced position in Kantara.

They were not short of work. A short while after they had taken up their position, an anti-tank missile hit a D9 bulldozer operating near the building. Its heavy armor didn't stand up and its two-man team was immediately killed. Soldiers of the medical company rushed to the D9, despite the heavy fire, but were unable to extricate the bodies of St.-Sgt. Yevgeny Timofeyev, 20, and another soldier whose name hasn't yet been released.

"We had to restrain our doctor from rushing out to the D9," one of the medics said on Monday. "It's not his job to evacuate and we have to protect him. If something happens to him, we're lost."

The soldiers returned to the building, and at about 4:30 p.m., an explosion hit the building, and then two others. The team whose job it was to tend to the battalion's wounded suddenly had to treat itself.

"It was an awful feeling," he said. "We didn't know even where to shoot back. Suddenly the radio was full of shouting, 'Don't shoot, it's our own forces.'"

Two soldiers were killed and nine others wounded in the explosions. Warr. Ofc. Amitai Yaron, 44, of Zichron Ya'acov was the registry-medic of the company. A father of three, Yuri, as the other soldiers called him, was the oldest medic in the battalion. He was already exempt from reserve duty but had volunteered. St.-Sgt. Peter Ohatosky, 24, from the evacuation platoon, was also killed.

"One of our company commanders told us that it was one of our tanks which had fired at us," said the medic.

Reporters who had spoken with the division command had been told that it was probably a case of "friendly fire" from IDF tanks. But on Monday morning, Deputy Chief of General Staff Maj.-Gen. Moshe Kaplinsky said that it had been a Hizbullah anti-tank missile, and the IDF Spokesman's Office told the press that battle debriefings had determined that it was not friendly fire.

The soldiers of the medical company were angry at what they saw as a whitewashing of the circumstances of their comrades' deaths.

Attempts by The Jerusalem Post to obtain a more comprehensive account of the battle from the IDF were unsuccessful.

IDF experts have said in the past that during wars, up to 20 percent of casualties are caused by friendly fire. In this war, there has been at least one confirmed death of a soldier from friendly fire and at least a dozen wounded. A number of other cases are still under investigation.

The deputy commander of the Herev Battalion told the Post on Monday that in at least two cases, his soldiers narrowly escaped mistaken fire from IDF tanks.

You mean those bargain wouldn't be available if it weren't for corporate donations? If only we could get those liberal professors to take a pay cut for the drivel they teach it would even be a better bargain.

Two more "good guys" just told me they want to join the protest. If they try to stop you, use a free wi-fi. There is nothing they can do. I've been to other blogs telling them about our protest, and many want to join. Let's talk about this in our land at 6:00 PM Pacific.

Hezbullah, Zionism & The
Ideology Of Late Imperial America Awakening The Resistance
By Jennifer Loewenstein

Are we really surprised by the vast, Hizbullah-led resistance? By the linkage it makes with people across the boundaries of national insult, defeat and humiliation? Are we really surprised that 40 years after Israel's occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip and the Golan Heights and 6 years into its continued occupation of the Shebaa Farms in Lebanon that people are have had enough? Are we really surprised that 3 and a half years into the US occupation and devastation of Iraq, 5 years after the US invasion and destruction of Afghanistan and decades of killings, intrusions, violations, abductions, assassinations, meddling, economic sanctions, pilfering and exploitation of the people, lands and resources of the Middle East that the reckless, racist, power-drunk mercenaries of empire should finally be met with a legitimate popular resistance? - not an outgrowth of displaced fanaticism, not an al-Qaeda gang of killers, but the beginnings of a grassroots pan-Arab and pan-Islamic movement seeking to heal the wounds of perpetual subjugation?

What message have the purveyors of state power brought with them that their listeners should wish to continue to bow in subservience? The conditions are not right for a ceasefire, say George Bush and Condoleeza Rice. First burn down the house and then we can discuss how to put out the flames. We are not just fighting Hizbullah, says Israeli Prime Minister Olmert, but Syria and Iran as well. Accept our vision of a Starbucked-MidEast; a Middle East with sanitized Muslims appointed by the corporate board of Ziocondriacs who break into hives at the words "Islam" and "Arab;" whose peace imposes fast food franchises; whose freedom is the right to purchase arms at the Great Mall of the Gulf States; whose riches are the oil wells mortgaged to Texas; and whose water resources run through the processing plants of the Ariel and Gush Etzion settlement blocs.

This was from a story about Republican congressman Allen:
"This fellow here, over here with the yellow shirt, macaca, or whatever his name is. Let's give a welcome to macaca, here."

In remarks Friday at campaign rally in Virginia, Allen reportedly referred to the Indian-American man -- a volunteer with the Senate campaign of his Democratic opponent -- as a "macaca". Macaca is the Latin name for a type of monkey found in Southeast Asia, and in some European cultures is considered a racial slur against African immigrants, the Post said. Allen told The Post that he did not realize that macaca had a pejorative meaning and apologized if his use of the word gave offense.

I was told to address three commenters in particular: Hapless, Factless and Clueless. I'm guessing that Hapless is Happy and Clueless is LBH. It's hard to tell because the commenter that calls itself factchecker is also clueless. But Factless would seem a proper moniker for someone that goes by the name factchecker. It was suggested that this image be associated with the one that calls himself factchecker. Now I understand exactly why.

The three stooges? My boss sends his regards.

BUYING CAKES BEFORE ARREST
THE LIQUID BOMBS PLOT
By Tom Pettifor
Mirror UK

CHATTING and joking with supermarket staff, this is terror bomb suspect Tayib Rauf just two hours before he was arrested by anti-terror officers.

The 22-year-old brother of Rashid Rauf who is being quizzed in Pakistan, was captured on CCTV ordering cakes and buns for his family's bakery business.

The film was taken as police prepared to swoop on him and 22 others they believe may have been involved in the plot to blow up jets over America.

But Mohammed Nazam who owns the shop where he was filmed insisted the picture shows he is innocent.

The boss of the New Dadyal Cash and Carry in Birmingham said: "Does this look like the kind of person planning such a plot? He doesn't look like he's about to blow himself up.

"The day he got caught he was with me till 2.30 in the morning.

"We chatted about business and ordinary things, nothing to do with politics."

Nazam, a former Birmingham city councillor, said Rauf had come to the shop to collect a cheque to pay for an order that he made from his family business Classic Confectionery Suppliers.

He added: "He probably still had my cheque in his pocket when he was picked up, around four in the morning from his home.

"If he were a person involved in a gang, he wouldn't be sitting with me chatting, would he?"

The footage shows Rauf wearing a white T-shirt and beige trousers.

He was helping with his family's business while his father, Abdul, was in Pakistan for several family weddings.

Nazam added: "He was responsible for looking after the orders while his dad was away in Pakistan.

"And he was more concerned about his dad's business than anything else in the world."

Google: John Hagee. He believes that Israel has never belonged to the Palestinian people. He believes the land was called Palestine by the Romans & points to the fact that there is no Palestinian language and that before 1948, the Palestinians lived in Egypt, Syria & Iraq. However, this is all non-sense according to any anthropologist or philologist of any repute, because the Palestinians of ancient times spoke Aramaic. Furthermore, the Ancient Hebrews are now believed by many to merely have been a collection of several races, not a single race--namely Hurrians, Hittites, Khemites and Canaanites, predominantly. The only historical record of the Hebrews from the time they existed describes them as Habiru or Apiru, a name meaning 'outcast' and referring to the fact that they were a mixed people comprised of outcasts from other societies.

Hagee has said that Iran is a threat to Western civilization & does not believe that the Islamofascist mentality will ever respond favorably to diplomacy. He supports an American-Israeli pre-emptive strike on Iran to take out its nuclear capability. However, he is in full support of the Neo-Conservative movement, which has been described by many as 'neo-fascist'.

Oh yeah, this is progress.

Iraqi Death Toll Rose Above 3,400 in July

July appears to have been the deadliest month of the war for Iraqi civilians, according to figures from the Health Ministry and the Baghdad morgue, reinforcing criticism that the Baghdad security plan started in June by the new Iraqi government has failed.

An average of more than 110 Iraqis were killed each day in July, according to the figures. The total number of civilian deaths that month, 3,438, is a 9 percent increase over the tally in June and nearly double the toll in January.

The rising numbers indicate that sectarian violence is spiraling out of control and seem to bolster an assertion that many senior Iraqi officials and American military analysts have been making in recent months: that the country is already embroiled in a civil war, not just slipping toward one, and that the American-led forces are caught between Sunni Arab guerrillas and Shiite militias.

The numbers also provide the most definitive evidence yet that the Baghdad security plan started by Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki on June 14 has not quelled the violence. The plan, much touted by top Iraqi and American officials at the time, relied on setting up more Iraqi-run checkpoints to stymie movement by insurgents. Those officials have since acknowledged the plan has fallen far short of its aims, forcing the American military to add thousands of soldiers to the capital this month and to back away from proposals for a withdrawal of some troops by yearÕ³ end.

Fox News Airs Call for 'Muslim-Only' Line

A Fox News guest proposed having a "Muslims only" line for airport travelers, an idea that "Dayside" co-host Mike Jerrick called attention to it so that viewers did not overlook the proposal.

Conservative radio host Mike Gallagher suggested the idea during a segment Tuesday (August 15, 2006) with constitutional lawyer Michael Gross discussing racial profiling.

"Dayside" co-host Juliet Huddy set up the debate by noting that all terrorists have been Muslim extremists, and Jerrick claimed that some people oppose racial profiling as "politically incorrect."

"ItÕ³ not just a matter of political correctness, please," responded Gross. "It's illegal, it's unconstitutional, unethical, immoral, it shouldn't be done. We do not in this country prejudge a person based upon their race, creed, color, country of national origin and it's wrong to do so and it addition it's not effective. It doesn't work. It actually perpetuates the problem. That is, it separates us."

Gallagher responded that Gross's statements were "absolutely absurd" and claimed that the Traffic Safety Administration is aggressively targeting uniformed members of the military. "Let's have a Muslim-only line," Gallagher said, as Gross started to talk.

Jerrick asked Gallagher to repeat what he said.

"It's time to have a Muslims check-point line in America's airports and have Muslims be scrutinized. You better believe it, it's time," Gallagher said, garnering tepid audience applause.

Gross attacked the proposal as "absolutely wrong" because "most Arabs are not Muslims, most Muslims are not Arabs. You don't even have your facts straight. How would you feel if we had a line for the Irish, which the English proposed during the IRA problems?" He pleaded not to turn the United States into a "tyrannical, imperial country." Still, a woman in the audience asked a question about being "politically correct" by not allowing racial profiling.

CEI Expert: 'The Best Policy Regarding Global Warming Is To Neglect It'

Over the weekend, Donald J. Boudreaux - George Mason Unversity professor and "expert" at the Exxon-backed Competitive Enterprise Institute - wrote an op-ed in the Chicago Tribune called "The case for neglecting global warming." He argued that the "documented health gains that people in the West have enjoyed over the past five or six generations" can be attributed to capitalism. Therefore, the government shouldn't work to stop climate change because it would impede capitalism:

Those of us who recognize these important benefits of capitalism "are reluctant to yield power to governments to tackle global warming... [I]t's a perfectly legitimate stance for truly reasonable people to conclude that the best policy regarding global warming is to neglect it- and let capitalism continue to make us healthier and wealthier.

Big business recognizes that strong environmental policies and capitalism aren't mutually exclusive. According to a recent report from the Climate Group, an international environmental charity, "43 multinationals - including Bayer, BT and DuPont- saved a combined $11.6 billion last year by improving energy efficiency, reducing waste output and harnessing solar power."
The best policy regarding global warming is to neglect Boudreaux.

The Wall Street Journal has all the news that's fit to print? Ned Lamont isn't a fully purchased politician? How believeable is the rag?

During the `90's the editorial page, led by conspiracy buff Robert Bartley, uncorked a decade's worth of comical 'enterprise' pieces as the kooky staff of ideologue reporters set out to connect the dots, for example, between president Clinton and a drug-running scheme in Mena, Arkansas. The editorial page missives from the Clinton years are nothing short of hysterical; proof of what happens when over-eager right-wingers pretend to be investigative hounds. (Read this for a full flavor of of the nuttiness.) But Journal brass refused to reign in the rogue enterprise. Maybe now it wishes it had.

The latest turmoil began with an unsigned June 30 editorial coming in the wake of the decision by New York Times, as well as the Los Angeles Times and Wall Street Journal, to reveal details about the administration's effort to track bank records of terrorists. Conservative press haters went bonkers, insisting the New York Times was guilty of treasonous behavior. But the activists were strangely silent about the roles played by the Los Angeles Times and the Journal. So in a futile effort to stitch together a coherent argument as to why the New York Times alone should be singled out for criticsm, the Journal's Times-hating editorial page explained that Journal reporter Glenn Simpson--unlike his competitor--was essentially handed his version of the banking story scoop on silver platter by the administration, and that Simpson dutifully wrote a softer version of the same story. The description was supposed to serve as a compliment, but for anybody in journalism who didn't work for the Journal's editorial page, the description representing a shocking insult, portraying Simpson as an administration shill, a stenographer really.

As is their custom, Paul Gigot's crew on the editorial page never tried to confirm its story; not with Simpson or the paper's D.C. bureau chief. In fact, managing editor Steiger didn't know the essay dissecting the Journal's news-gatthering process was running until he saw it in print. The editorial page, signaling its allegience to politics above journalism, played Journal reporters and editors for chumps.

Not surprisingly, staff reporters are pissed. The New York Observer this week collected some telling anonymous quotes:

• "People feel like we're walking around with knives in our backs. We rely on our editors to stick up for us. There's really a feeling we've been left to twist in the wind."

• "They're wrong all the time. They [the editorial page] lack credibility to the point that the emperor has no clothes."

• "To have Paul Gigot as our captain is bullshit. It's not for real."

And then there was this, on the record, from Journal political reporter Jackie Calmes: "I'm unhappy. I know a lot of other people are unhappy. The question is: What do we do about it?"

If that's not a plea for newsroom leadership, I don't know what is. Of course the current unpleasantness could have been avoided if somebody inside the Journal had, during the previous decade, stood up and publicly pointed out the uncomfortable, yet obvious fact that the paper's high-profile editorial page doesn't really practice journalism as defined by any modern professional standard, and that it often dismisses facts and ehtics with shocking ease. (Personal morals remain in question, too.) But nobody had the nerve. And now the entire Wall Street Journal news staff is paying the price for that timidly and lack of newspaper leadership.

The Editorial page of the WSJ is one of the more conservative in the US. The News division is one of the more liberal. This is not news. It takes a brief perusal of the paper to determine this for oneself.

Don't you feel all warm and fuzzy about all that money you gave for tsunami relief. Good to know they are back on their feet! Coming soon to a moderate Muslim state near you..............

Across this most religious of Indonesia's provinces, brown-uniformed policemen in black wagons enforce Shariah, or Islamic law: They haul unmarried couples into precincts and arrest people for drinking or gambling. Increasingly, many of the cases are pushed to public canings at mosques in front of pumped-up crowds.

On Friday, a man and a woman were caned with a rattan rod before a raucous crowd in the yard of the mosque in Samadua, a town in the southern part of the province of Aceh, after being arrested in a kiosk for being together and alone, although they were not married.

Snippets of the caning were shown on national television in images clear enough to show the woman sobbing after receiving seven strokes.

In mid-July, a 27-year-old man sentenced to 40 lashes, wielded by a hooded man in the yard of a mosque here in the provincial capital, fainted on the seventh stroke.

The caning was televised nationally, with an announcer reporting that the arrested man, who had been caught drinking at a beachside stall, would receive the remainder of his punishment once he had recovered.

Battered by the Asian tsunami 19 months ago, Aceh is undergoing a profound transformation that is likely to have considerable impact on the nature of Islam in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country.

For centuries, Indonesia has been known for an open-minded, sometimes freewheeling, interpretation of its dominant religion. That is changing as moderate Muslims find themselves under siege from more orthodox proponents, and as the moderates are hesitant to push back.

Aceh, where Islam has always been more rigorously observed, is the first of Indonesia's 33 provinces to put Shariah law onto the books. Special Shariah courts established to mete out punishments have been operating for a year.

Now, some of Indonesia's other provincial governments are looking to Aceh as a model for how they might put into greater effect Shariah laws already on the books. More than a score of townships across Indonesia have introduced Shariah-like laws that fall short of the precision of the religious laws here.

The 1945 Indonesian Constitution is generally considered a secular document. But in a signal of the current mood in Indonesia, leading politicians have recently refrained from criticizing Aceh's new laws. Indeed, the laws were written in 2003 and had been made possible by the national government as a special gesture to the province, which for years suffered through separatist unrest.

In Aceh itself, though, the way the new laws are being enforced has aroused some opposition, especially among women. Often, they say, an arrest by overeager Shariah police officers, many of them men in their 20s and 30s, seems orchestrated as a punishment unto itself.

When three female activists, chatting in the seclusion of a hotel corridor after a long day of meetings, were shoved into an open police van in February for not wearing their head scarves, the police paraded them before a throng of men.

"We believed we were in our personal space, and they broke into our personal space," said Nursyamsiah, 41, the head of the Acehnese Women's Empowerment Group, who recounted sitting on a sofa in the hotel where they had been staying after a United Nations-sponsored seminar on women's rights.

About 11 p.m. the Shariah police burst in, demanding to know why they were in a hotel at such an hour. "They made sure people were laughing and booing at us as they took us to the mayor's office," she said.

In a ruling that has enraged women's groups, an elementary school teacher, a married woman in her 30s, was sentenced on July 21 to caning for working in the headquarters of a political party on a Sunday afternoon at the same time as the party leader, who was not her husband.

"They were two people working in different rooms. How can she get punished?" asked Fatimahsyam, the head of the women's branch of the legal aid society in Lhoksemawe, Aceh's second- biggest city.

It is not easy, the women's groups say, to question the Shariah laws for fear of being considered an unfaithful Muslim. The women's groups are careful not to criticize the existence of the laws themselves but rather the method of enforcement.

Curiously, Nursyamsiah, who was arrested here, is a civil servant assigned to the Shariah offices in Lhangsia, in southern Aceh. There she has watched the introduction of the new laws up close. A new force of 75 Shariah police officers - 70 men, 5 women - is being trained, she said.

The system of Shariah laws, she said, represents a form of politics as usual, a way of fattening the payroll.

"By applying Shariah law, the governor, the political elites, get more money for police, more courts," she said. "We've opened a new section of government to look after Shariah."

What also rankled her, she said, was the fact that the laws on drinking, gambling and relations between men and women tended to affect poor people the most. "Why," she asked, "have they not introduced the Shariah laws on corruption? Stealing in Islam is a bigger sin than these small sins."

At the municipal office of the Shariah police in Banda Aceh, Nasir Illyas, the director of administration, defended the style of punishment, proudly showing off the 91-centimeter, or nearly 3- foot, rattan rod - with a curved handle for a better grip - that he keeps near his desk.

The rules are fair, he said, as he itemized the following particulars from a manual: a minimum of about two and a half feet between the person who canes and the defendant; the cane is applied from the left side; onlookers are at least 9 meters, or about 30 feet, away.

Illyas, who sits under a portrait of the Indonesian president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, said that the Shariah laws were the "wish" of the people. The laws should be extended to non-Muslims, too, he said, which would place Aceh in the same ranks as Saudi Arabia.

Such a broad application, now under discussion among Aceh's officials, could have ramifications for the economic future here. Foreign aid workers, overseeing billions of dollars of international reconstruction aid, say they are finding the province less welcoming.

In mid-July, an Italian aid worker was arrested by the Shariah police for being with an Acehnese woman late at night. It was the second arrest of a foreign aid worker and an Acehnese person of the opposite sex in the past several months.

For some, the enforcement of Shariah laws is upsetting the ideal of a new Aceh as an open society.

The director of the agency responsible for rebuilding the tsunami-ravaged province, Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, is a graduate of Stanford University, and a well-traveled government official from the capital, Jakarta. But to remind visitors that Aceh was once a bustling entrep™t, he keeps a turn-of-the-20th-century photograph of Sabang port, the main entry point to Aceh, on his wall.

It would be impolitic for Kuntoro to speak out against the Shariah laws, but the message of the photo, and a remark to a visitor that Sabang once rivaled Hong Kong, is clear.

Hello Corn folk!

I too, like Satans little helper am employeed by boss man pandemoniac. Unlike Satans little helper I'm illegal. I believe this is why Mr pandemoniac pays me less that minimum wage with no health insurance. He has promised me that if I continue to let him take me from behind (I think you know what I mean) he will bring my family from Mexico. I once told him I didn't think this was right but he said if I didn't continue the evil Republicans would deport me back to Mexico. I don't mind so much because Mr pandemoniac has a very small penis and it doesn't even hurt at all. Poor Satans helper has to even blow him for the extra .25 an hour over minimum wage that he gets. You don't want to know what he does for health insurance and believe me when Mr pandemoniac is done with him he needs a doctor!!!

Record "Troll" posting this evening and Corn didn't even provide a topic? Keep it up trolls I can't stop laughing. I know you are all aware that "Bushlies.com" benefits greatly from your hate while exposing your apparent lack of brain matter.

Don't ever be afraid to feed the trolls, they need love and nurturing as much if not more than most. It's really not their fault that they are mostly illiterate. You see many of them were forced to attend public schools that they do not believe in. And they have been forced to exist in a country with a "government" that they do not believe in. And they are forced to gather information from a "media" that they do not believe in. And when they get old they will be forced to cash that social security check that they donÕt believe in. So you see it's hard for the trolls to believe. All we can really do is try to comfort them, even though they donÕt believe it.

American Soldiers

2,931 American soldiers have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan for Bush and his lies.

18,500+ American soldiers have been maimed in Iraq and Afghanistan for Bush and his evil lies.

55,000+ of the 140,000 American soldiers are suffering from PTSD. Stress disorder has increased and the percentage is now around 40%.

Over 350,000+ Iraqis have been killed in Iraq since Bush declared shock and awe bombings on March 19, 2003.

Contamination from depleted uranium may have affected 125,000+ American soldiers and several million Iraqis.

I will try to share with you a money figure for our war and occupation in Iraq. Our government taps into different bottomless money wells for wars and it is difficult to always know the correct amount of money that is being spent. Money figures will probably change from time to time. By 2010 we will have spent in Iraq $1.2 trillion. We will be in Iraq for at least 50 years and the money figure that is mentioned is $8 to 10 trillion. We will probably never leave Iraq, especially with 14 permanent bases in Iraq and of the 14 permanent bases 4 are mega military bases. Iraq will have access to a bottomless money well.

We Happy Few

"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers." Henry V. 4.3. The number of those who believe in Christ's message of peace is small, but sometimes we rejoice in our tiny numbers. Our message is utterly drowned out by the lies that pour forth daily from the corporate media which celebrates violence as the ultimate distraction from the boredom engendered by the savage greed of the Empire. Yet our message will not be lost - the time will come when the pablums which promise soothing to the comfortable Christians who can't be bothered with their Lebanese or Iraqi brothers and sisters will lose their savor. Emptiness will lead to desperation and our message will be sought out, all the stronger for its present obscurity.

Remember, Lord, how your servant is taunted,
how I have to bear all the insults of the peoples.
Thus your enemies taunt me, O Lord,
mocking your anointed at every step.
Blessed be the Lord for ever. Amen, amen!

In the words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, "May God lead us to a true understanding of God's goodness. Don't we see that the gifts of God's goodness become a curse for us if we have such thoughts about them and act in such a way; if we look upon ourselves as models of virtue, instead of growing humble as we look at the imcomprehensibility of God and the worry and anxiety our wealth creates in us and if we thank God only for God's goodness to us instead of becoming conscious of the immeasurable responsibility which is laid upon us by God's goodness? If we want to understand God's goodness in God's gifts, then we must think of them as a responsibility we bear for our brothers and sisters. Let none say: God has blessed us with money and possessions, and then live as if they and their God were alone in the world. For the time will come when they realize that they have been worshipping the idols of their good fortune and selfishness. Possession are not God's blessing and goodness, but the opportunities of service which God entrusts to us."

It may well be that, far from being the blessings we imagine, our possessions are the judgement that God has laid on us. The idol of abundance has enslaved us and we worship our selfishness to the point of being oblivious to the murders it requires.

Politicians are not talking to politicians: Israel is not talking to Lebanon. We are not talking to Syria. Iran and Syria are concerned about Lebanon and disturbed about U.S. willingness to allow unmitigated violence against innocent people to continue. More than that, culture and languages make us strangers to one another. And yet, understanding is the only hope we have of peace.

The dirt I eat 5 days a week, is making me ever more comfortable $$$$$$-wise! Why don't you compare the price of oil stocks from 2000 to now! I'm already up about 7% this year! Was up over 10% in early May at the year high!

Didn't go net-crazy in the big downturn year of 2000 (Clinton's last year) and cashed out my small bit of spec stocks ahead of the collapse! Only losing Bush year was 2002! Made a killing in 2003!

You have shown, time and again, of your limited financial acumens and faulty understanding of economics! All you know is drawing a no-risk salary (likely hired in under some EEOC quota) and blog on company's dime between 8-5! Your limited ability leads you to think the market is always rigged (yes, sometimes) and that few can play the market and `win'! Wrong! Money can be made in any kind of markets! You noticed that I rarely waste time here when the market is open?

Having gone back and reread the last couple of day's worth of "discussion" on this blog. I have come to a few very surprising conclusions.
1 - Saladin is either the biggest believer in free speech or the craziest person in blogland. Standing up for LBH (when he recently stated that there is a reason that we will never have a female president) makes no sense. He isn't lowering the level of discourse. It isn't discourse in any sense of the word. Trash talking is trash talking.
2 - blogger.com and some of the other free blog spaces have options for registration and authentication. They aren't foolproof because republicans keep breeding bigger and better fools. But this blog will never be a place for discussion in the normative sense of the word until a moderator takes the reins of the comments section. You will have to suffer fools gladly or go someplace else. Someone mentioned that registration was at one time required on this blog. I would really like to know why that policy was terminated.
3 - I don't have words to describe the depths to which the republican party has fallen. The braindamaged wastrels that post their tripe on this blog have to be the worst writers, shallowest thinkers and the most bigoted cavemen this country ever created since the days of Lincoln.
4 - All in all, while I admire your effort, until you get actual trolls who provoke discussion and debate with pointed jabs, your logic, humor and creativity are pearls before swine. But if nobody's minding the comments section, you might as well stick the fuckers and watch them bleed.

Satan will be done with jury duty soon. He will get me those Spurs tickets he promised me or I will javabomb the shit out of his nasty little network. Ya heard?

Happy, 'they' are misogynist. They are racist. They are so far beyond anti gay it's fightening. That group would watch somebody get the shit beat out of them and laugh.

'They' don't understand the difference between Pandemoniac's ribbing and their own out of control behavior. When Pandemoniac ribs he's pushing the people like LBH to go out and collect real facts. If they're not going to find real honest to goodness facts but instead just blowback talking points they are going to get roasted. Believe me, there is no ill will toward them. They hand him the ammunition and they shout "Shoot me now."

That's the difference. What I saw for the past few days is nothing but abuse. It was meant to cause problems for David, your host. It was meant to get people to stop blogging here. It was meant to hurt. There was nothing constructive involved. It was just gross behavior.

"....something you posted may have given a gang member the `inspiration' to come up with a really degrading name!"

You're kidding right? I used to hear that woman who were beaten in domestic situations had it coming. And then suddenly people became educated about how sick that attitude was. There was no inspiration in coming up with that name. They probably heard the term used when they were in junior high, saw the reaction it got and used it from then on.

You know what bothers me the most about their behavior? I don't want to be in their presence. And I don't like to think that way. I like to be very open to people. I think David Corn is the same way. They abused his hospitality and they took advantage of his good nature.

They owe David an apology.

Yes, it is truly amazing. They have allowed people who should be kept in check at all times to run companies, and the Republcian Party. Look at Enron. What was Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling doing running a company? They were con men. They were sociopaths. And that's who we have in the white house. We have leadership right now who think it's ok to take the toys at their disposal and use them. The only thing that is stopping them from using the nukes is the pentagon. The military guys are holding them at bay. Like Seymour Hersh I will breathe easier when they are out of the white house. When they are out...oh the stories you will be reading. I'm amazed at how much energy LBH expends to make a small-minded point. His point is that he can exact a level of disruption by antagonizing, posting a lot of right wing articles, criticizing or belittling cornbloggers he disagrees with, posting vulgarity like cum sucker, and engaging other like-minded folks to come here to do the same.

To some extent, he's been disruptive but truth be told he is not so hard to ignore. While it is a waste of time to read a thread like today’s thread, I think it’s clear that engaging LBH fuels the fire and ignoring his piffle does the opposite. Instead, engage people who post with something to say and ignore inflammatory provocations. Yes, it's more easily said than done but the payoff is definitely worth it!

I don't think LBH is very interested in political topics of the day. I think he's interested in blogging as a game to be won with a snappy putdown, to vent his contempt and exercise his self-loathing.
