U.S. Threatens Suit if Maine Probes Verizon Ties to NSA

The Bush administration is threatening to sue if Maine regulators decide to investigate whether Verizon Communications illegally turned over customer information to the National Security Agency.

Verizon customers in Maine have asked the state's Public Utilities Commission to investigate whether the telecom giant violated privacy laws by cooperating with a domestic surveillance program. The PUC is expected to decide Monday whether to open such a probe.

In a July 28 letter to the PUC, the U.S. Department of Justice cites national security as a key reason for its opposition to a state investigation. The seven-page letter suggests a lawsuit is likely if Maine regulators decide to investigate.

"We sincerely hope that, in light of governing law and the national security concerns implicated by the requests for information, you will decline to open an investigation and close these proceedings, thereby avoiding litigation over the matter," the letter reads.

The Justice Department and Verizon both declined to comment on the letter Thursday.

The Justice Department's stance drew criticism from Maine groups that favor an investigation. They believe that if state secrets are at risk, precautions can be taken to ensure they aren't revealed.

"The federal Department of Justice is trying to kill the proceeding even before it begins, and I don't think that's proper," said Wayne Jortner, senior counsel in the Maine Public Advocate's Office, which represents citizens in cases involving public utilities.

Ok, so this is instructive, so bear with me for a bit while I walk through one particular person who seemed to be spearheading he Lieberman charge at the cheeseburger joint yesterday. The Record-Journal story pointed out that the main guy harrassing Ned was named Richard Goodstein.

Is this the same Richard Goodstein who gave Lieberman $1500 for his 2004 Presidential run? Because that Goodstein is a lobbyist in DC for the chemical and health supplies industry.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - While American politicians and generals in Washington debate the possibility of civil war in Iraq, many U.S. officers and enlisted men who patrol Baghdad say it has already begun.

Army troops in and around the capital interviewed in the last week cite a long list of evidence that the center of the nation is coming undone: Villages have been abandoned by Sunni and Shiite Muslims; Sunni insurgents have killed thousands of Shiites in car bombings and assassinations; Shiite militia death squads have tortured and killed hundreds, if not thousands, of Sunnis; and when night falls, neighborhoods become open battlegrounds.

"There's one street that's the dividing line. They shoot mortars across the line and abduct people back and forth," said 1st Lt. Brian Johnson, a 4th Infantry Division platoon leader from Houston. Johnson, 24, was describing the nightly violence that pits Sunni gunmen from Baghdad's Ghazaliyah neighborhood against Shiite gunmen from the nearby Shula district.

TYRE, Lebanon -- Three-and-a-half weeks of war have undone Lebanon's renaissance.

The human toll has been catastrophic enough, with more than 900 Lebanese killed and 913,000 displaced, at the government's last count.

But Israel's bombing campaign has also reduced much of the nation's infrastructure to a shambles, setting back painstaking and costly reconstruction that had finally put Lebanon on a prosperous path after decades of civil war and economic stagnation. Bridges, seaports, fuel depots, and the nation's airports and ports, border crossings, and all the major national highways have been attacked, causing more than $2 billion in damage.

In the latest blow, Israeli warplanes yesterday destroyed four key bridges on the country's last major land route to Syria, raising a new obstacle to aid efforts and adding to the rebuilding burden.

``If there is a definitive solution to the crisis, it will take two to three years to get back to where we were on July 12," the day the war began, said Marwan Mikhael, an adviser to Lebanon's minister of economy and trade.

Lebanon's prime minister, Fuad Saniora, said at an Islamic conference in Malaysia on Thursday that Israel's offensive on Lebanon ``is taking an enormous toll on human life and infrastructure, and has totally ravaged our country and shattered our economy."

Already the siege of Lebanon, which has been billed as another battle in the "war on terrorism," seems reminiscent of the war on Iraq, where a foreign army marched in with no concrete plan to restore peace and stability. Instead of having a basis in careful planning, the war on Lebanon seems to be built upon the grandiose schemes outlined in 1996 by a group of U.S. foreign policy hawks in a paper titled A Clean Break: A New Strategy for Securing the Realm . That strategy paper advocated the abandonment of the Arab-Israeli peace process and overthrowing regional regimes, including that of Saddam Hussein. Following this line of thinking, the current war-mongering U.S. administration has made a clean break from the honorable American tradition of promoting peace and has openly embraced the path of destruction.

Yet this path, which has led to a horrendous situation in Iraq, in no way serves American or Israeli interests, nor can it achieve peace and stability. After 23 days of war, the Israeli Army has gained little ground, nor has it reduced the capacity of Hezbullah to launch attacks on the Jewish state. And even if Israel manages to hurt Hezbullah, there is no forseeable way of defeating them. Much like the anti-occupation insurgents in Iraq, all Hezbullah needs to do is survive - potentially for decades - and keep inflicting pain on their Israeli occupiers until they are forced to leave in humiliation.

Israel's attacks on Lebanon satisfy nothing other than an insatiable appetite for destruction - that of neoconservatives and militants alike. Each day of the war propels moderates to the extreme and pushes possible solutions further and further out of reach. And far from crushing any enemies, the war is quickly turning the entire Middle East into a cauldron of anti-American and anti-Israeli militancy.

Every rational person's objective ought to be securing a lasting peace - a goal that cannot be achieved through warfare. Peace must be pursued on the basis of international law and the implementation of all U.N. resolutions, not on the basis of wanton destruction. The Israelis cannot afford another humiliating defeat in Lebanon, and they ought to be looking for a quick way out of the quagmire they have entered. Their best exit strategy, given that a total victory is unachievable, is to pursue the path of international law. Only then will the logic of peace and stability triumph over that of war and terror.

IDF spokespeople are maintaining that Hizbullah had been mounting missile attacks on Israeli territory from Qana in recent days. The IDF has claimed it targeted the three-storey house in Qana at 1.30am local time in the belief it contained a Hizbullah "asset".

Any investigation into the targeting of this house will have to consider precisely what kind of Hizbullah "asset" could possibly have been hidden in a modest, low-rise building among the narrow streets of a village such as Qana.

The type of missiles being fired by Hizbullah at Israeli cities cannot be fired from within houses, mosques, hospitals or even UN facilities as has been suggested by the IDF. Due to the massive "back-blast" caused by the rocket launchers of these missiles, they can only be fired from open ground. To fire them from within a building would result in the instant death of the missile crew and probable destruction of the missile before launch. Most of the missiles are truck-mounted and are fired - on open ground - from the backs of flat-bedded trucks or larger four-wheel-drive vehicles.

When fired, these missiles generate an enormous flare of light, heat and sound energy - a heat and light signature which is readily detected by IDF target-acquisition systems. Accurate retaliatory fire can be directed at Hizbullah launch sites by IDF aircraft and ground artillery in seconds. Such a reaction would be considered by international military norms to be proportionate and within the general "rules of engagement".

In these circumstances, having fired their missiles, Hizbullah tends to disperse as rapidly as possible. It is unlikely that a flat-bedded truck with a multilaunch rocket-system mounted on it could be easily and rapidly hidden in a village as small as Qana. Nor is it likely that such a truck-mounted weapon or four-wheel-drive vehicle could easily be hidden in a house such as the one targeted by the IDF yesterday.

The pattern and circumstances of the attack are sinister. With no telltale scorch marks from a Hizbullah missile launch visible near the destroyed house, and with no Hizbullah fighters among the dead and injured, the question remains as to what kind of "asset" the IDF could credibly allege to have been contained within the building.

The timing of the attack, taking place as it did during a period of relative calm and not in the immediate aftermath of a Hizbullah missile launch, speaks of a punitive strike designed simply to kill members of the Shia community from which Hizbullah is drawn and receives its moral support. The targeting of unarmed Shia women and children would represent a deliberate targeting of innocent civilians for retaliatory or punitive purposes, and may well constitute a war crime.

The damage to the fragile environment here is unimaginable. Most days, our proud capital city, Beirut, is engulfed in a haze--a mixture of dust from the rubble and massive infrastructure damage, fires that burn endlessly and from the bombs themselves. Three weeks ago Beirut's streets were thronged with visitors from all ends of the Earth. Today, the tourists have fled, and everywhere I turn, it seems, people are coughing or complaining of headaches. Every living creature is affected.

Despite Israel's claims that arms used in Lebanon do not breach international norms, Lebanese President Emile Lahoud has accused Israel of dropping white phosphorus explosives on cities in the south. The Environmental Protection Agency has listed white phosphorus as a hazardous air pollutant. The Geneva Conventions ban white phosphorus against civilians. However, in southern Lebanon, many victims have been treated for severe burns.

Anti-personnel cluster bombs have also been used against us. Cluster bombs are designed to inflict maximum damage on human beings by spraying smaller bomblets over a wide area. These can explode long after they are fired. These lethal gifts will litter our land for years to come, endangering farmers, children, animals--any living thing that, one day, fortune steers the wrong way. There is nothing selective or smart about such terrible weapons.

Lebanon's shoreline is now covered in thick black oil. An estimated 10,000 tons of heavy fuel oil have spilled into the Mediterranean Sea along our coast. The marine ecosystem is slowly suffocating under the sludge that is creeping down the coastline.

Young forests have gone up in flames. The damage to the agriculturally fertile areas of the Bekaa Valley and the South is immeasurable. Three of Lebanon's primary fuel reservoirs were hit by Israeli rockets, creating massive plumes of thick, noxious smoke that stood still for days under their own weight and mass. The cloud cover and stench are almost unbearable.

Everything those of us in Lebanon's environmental movement have striven so hard to achieve has unraveled in just two weeks. We are helpless to prevent this mutilation of our physical environment.

Rallies for and against Murtha held in Johnstown

The pro-Murtha demonstration, hastily assembled to counter the news conference called by his critics in a group called Veterans for the Truth, drew a crowd of between 150 and 200, who stood under a sweltering sun listening to a series of speakers praise the hometown lawmaker.

Mr. Cleland, a triple amputee from wounds received in Vietnam, charged that the Bush administration had targeted Mr. Murtha because of his critique of the war. He said they and their allies were using tactics reminiscent of the attacks against Sen. John McCain in the 2000 Republican primary in South Carolina, Sen. John Kerry in the last presidential election and Mr. Cleland himself in his 2002 Senate re-election defeat.

"We're not going to let them Swift Boat Jack Murtha,'' he said. "Jack Murtha is right and the president is wrong and we're not going to let them assassinate Jack Murtha's character.''

The stagecraft of the Democratic event was calculated to rebut the question from some critics about Mr. Murtha's patriotism. The speakers' roster was dominated by Iraq and Vietnam veterans. Eighteen large flags stirred behind them while members of the crowd held dozens more miniature flags along with their bottles of water.

On The Alan Colmes [Radio] Show the other night, Gleen Greenwald from Unclaimed Territory and Mark S. Zaid, the attorney for the Marine suing Cong. Murtha for defamation, debated the lawsuit. Greenwald concluded and alleged that the suit was politically motivated. Zaid responded that it wasn't and that he would add anyone, Dem. or Rep. who defamed his client. Link Here

I do not kill babies. I do not kill children. I do not condone ANY circumstance that ends the life of a child or brings harm to innocents downed in the cross hairs of adult perversion. There is NO circumstance whatsoever that legitimizes the murder of children. The term "collateral damage" ascribed to dead children or to the shredded bodies of living children is hideous.

The rite of passage from childhood to adulthood relinquishes the right to such irresponsibility. The whole process of maturation teaches the protection of children at all costs. Animals, both wild and domestic, abide by these instincts unconditionally. It is the aberrant adult dog who kills a puppy. And on the rare occasion such anomaly occurs, it confounds attendant humans due to the sheer unnaturalness of the act.

Our expectation for the compassion of canines transcends like expectations we hold for ourselves.

In the current debacle between Israel and Hezbollah, with the mounting deaths of Lebanese children, it is unconscionable for Israel to justify murdering these children by labeling them embeds of Hezbollah. One should convulse in shame at the insidiousness of such a declaration. To publicly declare the right to kill a child using proximity as exoneration of guilt, forfeits any claim to humanity. To willingly betray the life of a child, betrays every principal learned during the "normal" ascendancy from child to adult.

To these self-righteous ideologues I say: MAY YOU ENVISION FOR YOUR LIFETIMES THE FACES OF EVERY INFANT AND CHILD YOU HAVE SLAIN FOR YOUR CAUSE! What a pernicious badge of inhumanity.

Sadly, this badge of inhumanity isn't only worn by Israel who slays the children of Lebanon. Or by the Hezbollah who slay the children of Israel. It is worn by the Sudanese, who willingly decimate the children of Darfur. It is worn by the Congolese soldiers who savage the children of Congo. It was worn a dozen years earlier in Rwanda, when willing Hutus murdered hundreds of thousands of Tutsi children in a span of 100 days. The same badge of inhumanity was worn in Bosnia by the Serbs who murdered Muslim children, by the Turks who murdered Armenian children, by the Nazis who murdered Jewish children, and on and on and on.

Throughout the history of un-civilization, the badge of inhumanity has been worn by one genocidal ideology after another.

Shamefully, this very same badge of inhumanity is also worn by the United States, where I live. Where the Government's decision to willingly overtake the nation of Iraq has triggered the murders of tens of thousands of children. And where the ideological refusal to support a ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel willingly adds to the murders of Lebanese and Israeli children each and every day.

Even though Hezbollah has stated its willingness to honor a ceasefire with Israel, Mr. Bush, along with his former incompetent National Security Advisor and current incompetent Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice, believes Israel has the right to pursue its arbitrary barrage on Lebanon, with no neighborhood, no apartment building, no hospital, no school, no market, removed from its artillery sights.

As a resident of the United States, I am by default, in the eyes of the world, a presumed willing supporter of the murders of Lebanese and Israeli children. The President of this nation and members of both Houses of Congress overwhelmingly endorse the continued military assault by Israel upon Lebanon, which indiscriminately kills more children every day. Just as Israelis presume the people of Lebanon endorse Hezbollah when they share the same region, the world will presume I endorse Mr. Bush when we share the same nation.

More egregiously, just as Israelis and Hezbollah sacrifice each other's children for the 'crime' of shared terrain, so one day may America's children be sacrificed for sharing terrain with the world's most undeniably hated man, George W. Bush.

Horrifying, but not unlikely, if Bush is allowed to stay on.

As the daughter of a Jewish American mother and Italian American father, a second generation American living in the United States, I am bound by the laws of this nation, governed by its regulatory agencies, and represented to the world by its elected officials. But when the beliefs and behaviors of those elected officials are in constant moral opposition to my own, I can no longer permit them to represent me. I refuse to have the citizens of the world, my global brothers and sisters, believe I am a willing partner to imperial atrocities. Worst of all, to the murder of children.

If one unquestioningly subscribes to the mantra "America, love it or leave it," one is blind to the more essential mantra, "Humanity, love it or grieve it." My refusal to be morally distorted by George W. Bush can only be accomplished by relinquishing all connection to his governance. As of now, I don't know how to categorize the state of residing in a nation as a full citizen while not governed by its leadership. I didn't vote for this leadership and I'm not willing to remain a voiceless mass falsely portrayed by the Bush imperial regime. I must somehow broadcast beyond the borders of America that residing within its boundaries are millions of leaderless, unrepresented lovers of peace trying unceasingly to win back their nation. Not just to save America. But to save the whole world. To save the children. The children.

For now, I'll contend I'm a Bush government ex-patriot living in the United States. I won't seek out another nation. This is MY nation and I'm a viable entity within it. I uphold its Constitution. I pay my taxes. I make my living. I honor my neighbors. I feel no superiority to those beyond its borders. I share conscientiously in our nation and our planet.

But I have NO GOVERNMENT. I'm a disenfranchised American. George Bush doesn't know my heart. He's never looked in my eyes and seen my "soul." If he did look in my eyes, he'd see a disenfranchised American looking back. Not with warmth or admiration. Not as a member of his electorate. But as an ex-patriot of his government who resides within the nation. A disenfranchised American.

America, leave it or SEIZE IT. Humanity, know it and show it. Save the children!! Save the children!! Save the children!!

Dems Release Report Alleging White House Lawbreaking

Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee have released the final version of their report, "Constitution in Crisis," which details the many broken laws, misstatements and missteps they allege the Bush administration to have made. You can find it here.

We reported Monday on a draft summary of the document written by the top Judiciary Dem, Rep. John Conyers (D-MI).

Earlier this week I had a chance to talk with Conyers about why he produced the report.

"We could get no response from the president" about their concerns over pre-war intelligence and the march to war in Iraq, he said. "Then we tried to get hearings in the Judiciary Committee," which met with a "no way" response, according to Conyers.

"We said, 'look, we'll do it ourselves'" -- compile a document that lists every instance of alleged wrongdong by the Bush administration's handling of intelligence, the war in Iraq, and retaliation against those who tried to speak out about it. "Every sentence, every allegation, every accusation that we have in this 371-page report has a citation or a reference to it of where we got it," Conyers explained, with a hint of pride at his staff's work.

Mexico full poll recount rejected

Mexico's electoral body has rejected a request by left-wing candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador for a full recount of votes from July's disputed election.

Instead, the electoral tribunal's seven judges ordered a partial recount.

Mr Lopez Obrador's supporters have repeatedly said a ballot-by-ballot recount is the only way to restore faith in Mexico's electoral system.

The 2 July vote gave victory to the conservative candidate, Felipe Calderon, by less than 1%.

The electoral tribunal ordered the recount of votes at 11,839 of the country's almost 130,500 polling stations.

Mr Obrador has challenged the election result, saying the vote was rigged.

He has said he will not accept a partial recount, raising fears of prolonged public unrest.

Hundreds of thousands of people in Mexico have been holding rallies to support Mr Obrador.

The dispute has paralysed Mexican politics, correspondents say.

A president-elect must be declared by 6 September to replace Vicente Fox on 1 December.

Bush Agrees Bin-Laden Helped in '04

After Election 2004, George W. Bush recognized that al-Qaeda leader Osama bin-Laden had helped him to victory by releasing a videotape denouncing Bush just four days before Americans went to the polls, a move the CIA has concluded was a bin-Laden ploy to ensure the U.S. President a second term.

In a post-election interview with Washington Times reporter Bill Sammon, Bush said he judged that bin-Laden’≥ harsh denunciation of him in a videotape released on Oct. 29, 2004, had rallied voters to the Republican banner.

"I thought it was going to help," Bush said. "I thought it would help remind people that if bin-Laden doesn’¥ want Bush to be the President, something must be right with Bush."

Bin-Laden’≥ diatribe –†after nearly a year of silence –†indeed did give Bush a crucial late boost with one national poll recording a six-percentage-point bounce in Bush’≥ favor. Bush supporters and many neutral voters apparently took bin-Laden’≥ words at face value, assuming that bin-Laden really wanted Bush to be defeated.

But CIA analysts concluded that bin-Laden was actually playing a double game, pretending to want Bush out when he really hoped Bush would stay in. Bin-Laden was cagy enough to realize that his well-timed denunciation of Bush would have a predictable boomerang effect and thus help Bush gain a second term.

Tom Friedman Throws in the Towel on Iraq

Finally, New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman has thrown in the towel on the Iraq War.

"It is now obvious that we are not midwifing democracy in Iraq. We are baby-sitting a civil war," he wrote in his Times column on August 4.

Long the war's leading liberal defender, Friedman came late and reluctantly to the realization that the jig is up.

"We can't throw more good lives after good lives," he wrote.

Beyond the human costs of the quagmire, which the peace movement has long tallied, Friedman also recognized what we in the peace movement have been saying about the security ramifications: "The longer we maintain a unilateral failing strategy in Iraq . . . the stronger the enemies of freedom will become," Friedman concluded.

This marks quite a journey for Friedman.

In his columns leading up to the war, Friedman supported the effort to take Saddam out, though not in the unilateralist fashion favored by the Bush Administration.

Nevertheless, in his final column on March 21, just as Bush was launching the war, Friedman wrote: "Bush's view is that in the absence of a UN endorsement, this war will become self-legitimating when the world sees most Iraqis greet U.S. troops as liberators. I think there is a good chance that will play out."

The three described what they thought would be the political situation after the fall of Saddam Hussein. During their conversation with the President, Galbraith claims, it became apparent to them that Bush was unfamiliar with the distinction between Sunnis and Shiites.

Microsoft Invites Hackers to Test Vista

Microsoft, one of the world's most ubiquitous companies, unveiled a plan to fortify Vista, their new product, against attacks that could compromise bank account numbers and other sensitive information.

Microsoft is inviting some of the world's best-known computer experts to fix the security weakness in the new generation communication system. It distributed a trial version of the product to 3,000 security professionals.

"We're here to show our work, you need to touch it and feel it," Andrew Cushman, one of the security directors of Microsoft, said at the Black Hat security conference.

Jon Callas, chief technology officer at PGP said, "They are going to people who don't like them, say nasty things, and have the incentive to find the things that are wrong."

GOP Hurt by Redrawn Texas District

Three federal judges on Friday reunited a south Texas county into one congressional district under a Supreme Court-ordered map revision, a move that solidified Hispanic voting strength and made one Republican incumbent's re-election campaign more difficult.

Several districts were affected by the plan, but no House incumbent was bumped into another district. The judges emphasized that they made the minimal changes possible to fix the violations ordered by the Supreme Court.

The revision came after the Supreme Court in June found that the congressional map drawn by Republican state lawmakers in 2003 unconstitutionally diluted Hispanic voting power by dividing Hispanics in Webb County into two different districts represented by GOP Rep. Henry Bonilla and Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar.

The new map places Webb County, which includes Laredo, entirely in Cuellar's district.

A vote cannot occur in the Security Council until 24 hours after the formal introduction of a resolution. And it is far from clear whether Israel or Hezbollah would abide by the terms.

Swept up by a wave of patriotism after the US invasion of Iraq, Chris Magaoay joined the Marine Corps in November 2004.

The newly married Magaoay thought a military career would allow him to continue his college education, help his country and set his life on the right path.
Less than two years later, Magaoay became one of thousands of military deserters who have chosen a lifetime of exile or possible court-martial rather than fight in Iraq or Afghanistan.

"It wasn’t something I did on the spur of the moment," said Magaoay, a native of Maui, Hawaii. "It took me a long time to realize what was going on. The war is illegal."

Magaoay said his disillusionment with the military began in boot camp in Twentynine Palms, Calif., where a superior officer joked about killing and mistreating Iraqis. When his unit was deployed to Iraq in March, Magaoay and his wife drove to Canada, joining a small group of deserters who are trying to win permission from the Canadian government to stay.

"We’re like a tight-knit family," Magaoay said.

Mass protests have erupted across much of the Muslim world against the war in Lebanon, prompting louder and more desperate calls for a ceasefire from governments fearful of a popular backlash.

Indonesia's President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who leads the world's most populous Muslim nation, said: "This war must stop now, or it will radicalize the Muslim world, even those of us who are moderate today. It is just one step from there to a clash of civilizations."

Malaysia offered to deploy 1,000 peacekeeping troops to monitor any cease-fire. Peaceful demonstrations took place in Indonesia, the Philippines and Bangladesh, while Pakistan's parliament unanimously adopted a resolution condemning the attacks and demanding an immediate ceasefire.

These protests were dwarfed yesterday, the Muslim sabbath, by demonstrations in Baghdad, where hundreds of thousands of Shia thronged the streets to voice their support for Hizbollah as Arab anger toward Israel mounted. Such protests have even reached Saudi Arabia, where public displays of discontent are rare. Strict state control limited the scale of protest in Cairo and Damascus in comparison with the turnout in Baghdad, organised by the Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

Crowds of Sadr supporters from across Iraq's Shia heartland converged on the capital's Sadr City district, chanting "death to Israel, death to America".

Israel's Marriage Ban Closes The Gates To Palestinians

In approving an effective ban on marriages between Israelis and Palestinians this week, Israel's Supreme Court has shut tighter the gates of the Jewish fortress the state of Israel is rapidly becoming.

The judges' decision, in the words of the country's normally restrained Haaretz daily, was "shameful". By a wafer-thin majority, the highest court in the land ruled that an amendment passed in 2003 to the Nationality Law barring Palestinians from living with an Israeli spouse inside Israel -- what in legal parlance is termed "family unification" -- did not violate rights enshrined in the country's Basic Laws. And even if it did, the court added, the harm caused to the separated families was outweighed by the benefits of improved "security".

Few observers in Israel, however, believe that their government passed the law in 2003 on security grounds. Of the 6,000 Palestinians given residency rights in Israel during the Oslo period, a tiny number -- only 25 -- have been questioned on security-related matters, according to figures the government reluctantly published during the case. How many of this number were actually involved in attacks has still not been clarified.

Israel, concluded the judges, was justified in closing the doors to residency for all Palestinians in order to block the entry of those few who might use marriage as a way to launch terror attacks. Applications for family unification in Israel invariably come from Palestinians in the occupied territories who marry other Palestinians, often friends or relatives, with Israeli citizenship. One in five of Israel's population is Palestinian by descent, a group, commonly referred to as Israeli Arabs, who managed to remain inside the Jewish state during the war of 1948 that established Israel. As there is no principle of equality in Israeli law, human rights groups who challenged the government's 2003 amendment were forced to argue instead that it violated the dignity of the families. Mixed Israeli and Palestinian couples are not only unable to live together inside Israel but they are also denied a married life in the occupied territories, from which Israeli citizens are banned under military regulations.
Other non-Jewish spouses (read mainly Europeans and Americans) will face age and income requirements and be expected to affirm a loyalty oath -- not to Israel, but to Israel as a Jewish and democratic state. In keeping with current policy, non-Jews are unlikely to receive citizenship but may be eligible for residency rights. As one seasoned Israeli observer, Shahar Ilan, commented in Haaretz: "It is doubtful that there are many issues that elicit such broad consensus in the [Israeli] political system as that of closing the gates to family unification [of non-Jews]." Such changes will make Israel unlike any state we have seen in modern times. In 1980, at the height of apartheid in South Africa, the courts there refused to approve legislation much like Israel's ban on family unification, arguing that it contravened the right to a family life.

In Israel, on the other hand, faced with a new wave of racist legislation, no one -- not even the country's "liberal" Supreme Court - is prepared to safeguard the most basic rights of the land's native people.

At each of the next 6 marches (in New York and D.C.) I attended the Fascist signs increased by leaps and bounds amongst the sea of signs. Thousands of Bush/Neocons are fascist signs.

When I was collecting my close to 1000 audio interviews (mostly focused on people over 65). I interviewed numerous older Jewish couples who were carrying the Bush administration are Fascist signs. They were able to recognize the signals out of this administration.

It was amazing how many older people were truely terrified of this group.

I know I may be repeating myself from long ago. But the other group of individuals that intrigued me were all of the older gents who were VEts, WWII, Korean, Vietnam, and the first Gulf war vets. Those guys really know what they are talking about when they say how criminal this group is sending young men and women off to a war based on false pretenses. Many of these mostly men began to cry when they would share what they felt about this illegal war. They know..They know how serious it is to send children off to war. They know it better be a damn good reason (backed up by solid evidence) for our leaders to send U.S. soldiers into harms way.

American mainstream news sure did not interview these vets for the evening news. NO they let many Americans sitting at home think that it was just a bunch of hippies at these marches. Instead of the families, Vets, truck drivers, tree huggers, Grandparents, teachers, lawyers, plumbers , social workers etc. I challenged many of the media outlets while they were filming, many would film the diversity, but by the time their producers got a hold of what they would film. We know the evening news would show the same footage of 20 people with black hoods over their heads over and over again. The american public was duped by the MSM, the media did not do their job and inform the public accurately. People were left at home in their living rooms confused by the few questions being asked on the BBC and in the alternative media. Thousands of innocent lives have been lost on this unnecesary war.

Will the mainstream ask hard and relevant questions about the claims being repeated about Iran and Syria. So far many in the press have allowed John Bolton and other Bush hacks continuously make endless unverifiable claims about Iran. (Although Juan Williams went off on Bill Kristol on Fox) The press is at fault once again if they do not do their job, and challenge these assertions about Iran and Syria.

Dear Cornposters:

This Sunday, August 6, 2006, is the Feast of the Transfiguration. On August 6, 1945 the atomic bomb was dropped on Japan. I believe the feast of the transfiguration calls us to transform our way of viewing this act. I believe that we need to transform our world, not by bombs but by prayer. We need to go to the mountain of God and listen to the voice of the prophets and hear what alternatives we have to end conflict.

The tragedy of what is happening to the good people of Lebanon cries out to God. It is terrible that the state of Israel should behave in such a manner. Nothing in their scriptures justifies such action. I heard a Jewish priest who was raised Jewish and he converted to Catholicism speak on the state of Israel and he said tragically the state has become like any other state. Israel has forgotten the promise to be a Light to the Nations.

The people of Lebanon are bleeding. They are in need of peace and a transfusion of love, mercy, and compassion. The people of Lebanon need for the world to cry out: enough!

The feast of the Transfiguration calls us to listen to alternative voices. We really have to go somewhere else than the newspaper and the television news to hear the voice of God. We need to turn off the television and sit quietly somewhere and pray.

President Bush has approved the secret program. (Intelligence, including that gathered by the NSA, has been provided to Israel in the past for various purposes.) Inside the administration, neoconservatives on Vice President Dick Cheney's national security staff and Elliott Abrams, the neoconservative senior director for the Near East on the National Security Council, are prime movers behind sharing NSA intelligence with Israel, and they have discussed Syrian and Iranian supply activities as a potential pretext for Israeli bombing of both countries, the source privy to conversations about the program says. The neoconservatives are described as enthusiastic about the possibility of using NSA intelligence as a lever to widen the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah and Israel and Hamas into a four-front war.

One way is by placing microchips in individuals (recently done by the President of a large American bank to "allow him access to secret vaults and store rooms in his bank"), the International Monetary Fund's Wolfowitz who will control the World Bank, the Federal Reserve Bank, all European banks, the Secretary General of NATO and therefore NATO itself; it includes the Tri-Lateral Commission's plan, already in process, of NAFTA, the Euro Group and to include a group of Asian countries.

The Qana massacre reveals the true face of Israel's aggression

The Qana massacre was the occasion for a full-court propaganda campaign by Israel's amen corner, and one has to say they rose to the occasion like real pros. First, of course, they expressed remorse then, naturally enough, they blamed it all on Hezbollah.

How so? Well, you see, the Israelis bombed a building filled with children and old people because rockets fired at Israel "originated immediately next to it." Yet the Red Cross denied there were any Hezbollah in Qana. The Israelis keep up a constant refrain claiming Lebanon uses its own civilian population as "human shields," but the reality is quite different: Lebanese civilians flee when Hezbollah fires a fusillade, because they know the Israelis will soon be bombing the place to perdition. Aside from which, Nasrallah's folks are a tightly knit group and security is taken seriously: a friend of mine who went into Hezbollah headquarters in southern Beirut was subjected to such a thorough search that by the time they were through with him he was bereft of his dignity as well as any desire to proceed further. Hezbollah doesn't trust noncombatants, and for that reason keeps well away from them no matter what their religious, ethnic, or political affiliations.

Read this Haaretz piece and see if you can figure out how the IDF is trying to slither and slide out of this one: the building didn't collapse immediately, there is an 8-hour gap or maybe not and "maybe we'll never know what happened." Blah blah blah in short, the Israelis are blowing a lot of smoke.

One has to wonder, however, what it is they're smoking if they really think anyone believes their overly elaborate obfuscations. Like a squid ejecting a cloud of ink, the Israeli propaganda machine is emitting all sorts of alternate scenarios, replete with maps, aerial photos, and video, and they dispatched their Internet army to spread the rationalizations far and wide. All to cover up a simple, irrefutable fact: it was Israeli warplanes, and not Hezbollah, that slaughtered 56 people, more than half of them young children, and the rest women and old folks.

Former Astronaut Glenn in Car Accident

Former senator and astronaut John Glenn and his wife were expected to be released from the hospital Saturday after getting in a car accident a day earlier, authorities said.

Glenn, 85, and his wife, Annie, 86, were in fair condition Saturday afternoon at Grant Medical Center and were expected to be discharged later in the day, nursing supervisor Louis Tejada said.

Hospital staff would not comment on the extent of their injuries. Police said Saturday no further information was available on the crash.

The driver of the other car, Amy Myers of suburban New Albany, said she was driving east late Friday night when Glenn, who was driving west, tried to turn left onto a highway ramp.

Myers, who was not injured, said her car hit the front of his.

Glenn was "very sincerely sorry," Myers said.

Glenn, who served in the Senate from 1974 to 1998, first made headlines in 1962, when he piloted the first manned orbital mission of the United States. He went back into space in 1998, at the age of 77.

Governors Bristle at Bush Guard Proposal

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The nation's governors are closing ranks in opposition to a proposal in Congress that would let the president take control of the National Guard in emergencies without consent of governors.

The idea, spurred by the destruction and chaos that followed Hurricane Katrina's landfall in Louisiana and Mississippi, is part of a House-passed version of the National Defense Authorization Act. It has not yet been agreed to by the Senate.

The measure would remove the currently required consent of governors for the federalization of the Guard, which is shared between the individual states and the federal government.

"Federalization just for the sake of federalization makes no sense," said Gov. Kathleen Blanco of Louisiana, a Democrat who had rough relations with the Bush administration after the disaster last year. "You don't need federalization to get federal troops. ... Just making quick decisions can make things happen."

Gov. Mark Sanford of South Carolina, a Republican, said "a whole bunch of governors" were opposed to the idea after the proposed change was brought up in a private lunch meeting.

Since the establishment of the UN, the US has used its veto no less than forty times to shield Israel from the international scrutiny and to enable it to violate international norms and to commit war crimes with impunity. The latest such obstruction of the international will occurred only two and a half weeks ago (July 13), when the US blocked a resolution that would have demanded Israel cease its onslaught against Gaza, the first Security Council veto in twenty one months. Not uncharacteristically, ten members voted in favor, while the US was alone voting against, with four abstentions. As a further sign of US isolation in the UN, eight of the last nine vetoes protecting Israel have been cast by the U.S. Remarkably, this is the first time in UN history that a call for a ceasefire is opposed so blatantly.

With pressure from the world community mounting for an immediate cessation of hostilities, the US and the Blair government are standing alone against the continuous killing of civilians despite Qana II and despite the description of Israel's atrocities by Louise Arbour, the top UN 's human rights official, who served as the chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Tribunals for Rwanda and Yugoslavia, as qualifying for war crimes under International criminal law and under International humanitarian law.

Rebels 'smell blood' in lawless Baghdad

Americans lose faith in war

IT IS rare that Donald Rumsfeld, the US defense secretary, is lost for words. Yet last week he was subjected to a tirade of criticism for his conduct of the war in Iraq from Senator Hillary Clinton, the Democrat favorite for president in 2008.

"Yes we hear a lot of happy talk and rosy scenarios, but because of the administration's strategic incompetence and record of blunders and, frankly, the record of incompetence in executing, you are presiding over a failed policy," Clinton charged at a hearing of the Senate armed services committee. "Given your track record . . . why should we believe your assurances now?"

Rumsfeld, who had not wanted to appear before the committee at all, reeled. "My goodness," he said, before embarking on an explanation of "the unfortunate and tragic thing that's taking place".

The defense secretary could not bring himself to say the phrase, civil war, but his top commanders did it for him. Their assessment was almost as blunt as that of William Patey, Britain's envoy to Iraq, who warned in a parting letter to London that the country was in a "low intensity civil war" with diminishing prospects of achieving a stable democracy.

General John Abizaid, the head of US forces in the Middle East, told the Senate committee that the sectarian violence was "probably as bad as I have seen it, in Baghdad in particular, and if not stopped, it is possible that Iraq could move towards civil war".

The chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, Peter Pace, backed him up. "We do have the possibility of that developing into civil war." He went on to say: "Shiite and Sunni are going to have to love their children more than they hate each other."

But his hometown congressman, Representative Bill Lowery of San Diego, a Republican, told him that presenting the checks during the sessions was not how things were done, Mr. Wilkes recalled.

Instead, Mr. Wilkes said, Mr. Lowery taught him the right way to do it: hand over the envelope in the hallway outside the suite, at least a few feet away.

That was the beginning of a career built on what Mr. Wilkes calls "transactional lobbying," which made him a rich man but also landed him in the middle of a criminal investigation.

These include: "willfully causing great suffering or serious injury to body or health . . . willfully depriving a prisoner of war" or other person under the power of the detaining authority "of the rights of fair and regular trial," and "unlawful deportation or transfer or unlawful confinement."

Some acts may also violate Common Article 3 of the Conventions which the Supreme Court relied on in its recent decision prohibits "cruel treatment," "humiliating and degrading treatment," and "passing of sentences . . . without previous judgment pronounced by a regularly constituted court, affording all the judicial guarantees which are recognized as indispensable by civilized peoples."

The U.S. and France agreed Saturday on a draft Security Council resolution that seeks a full halt to fighting in Lebanon, breaking a three-week impasse caused partly by Washington's refusal to press Israel to end its offensive against Hezbollah.

Despite the agreement, fighting raged on. Israeli naval commandos struck the southern port of Tyre before dawn, while Israeli air raids killed at least eight people across Lebanon and a rain of Hezbollah rockets on northern Israel killed three civilians.

The resolution would chart a path toward a lasting peace with a cease-fire monitored by international troops. If passed, it would be the most significant international response to the crisis and raise hopes of ending combat that has killed at least 600 and left Lebanon in tatters.

Mideast fight ramps up despite U.N. deal

BEIRUT, Lebanon - Israel and Hezbollah sharply intensified fighting Saturday with airstrikes, rocket attacks and brutal ground fighting — an apparent bid to inflict maximum mutual damage even as the United States and France agreed on a draft U.N. resolution calling for a halt to the violence.

Even if the U.N. Security Council adopts the resolution early next week as expected, the task of winning agreement from the warring parties portended a far more bumpy diplomatic road than the one already traveled.

As it became clear a U.S.-French agreement on the text was drawing near, Israeli-Hezbollah fighting grew particularly intense over the past few days.

Israeli commandos battled Hezbollah guerrillas in a dramatic raid on an apartment building in the southern port city of Tyre on Saturday, while warplanes blasted south Beirut. The fighting across Lebanon killed at least eight Lebanese and two Israeli soldiers, while a Hezbollah rocket volley killed three women in northern Israel.

Shortly after the diplomatic agreement was announced on the 25th day of the conflict, a Hezbollah Cabinet minister said militant Shiite guerrillas would not stop fighting until all Israeli troops leave Lebanon. The draft resolution makes no such demand.

"We (will) abide by it on condition that no Israeli soldier remains inside Lebanese land. If they stay, we will not abide by it," said Mohammed Fneish, one of two Hezbollah members of the government.

Israel takes aim at Lebanon's soft underbelly

Dahieh has been shelled repeatedly since the outbreak of the fighting, and on Thursday four missiles hit the area. The day before, Israeli warships in the Mediterranean Sea shelled Hezbollah's base in Dahieh. Part of the complex, a nine-story building, was hit again and again, even though it had been reduced to rubble five days previously. The building used to be the gym where Hezbollah members underwent physical training.

Almost all Dahieh's population has evacuated and all Hezbollah facilities in the neighborhood have already been destroyed. Tactically, of course, Israel aims to destroy all Hezbollah's assets and deprive it of bases and supplies. However, these Israeli strikes near the heart of Beirut have another significance.

"This neighborhood is the stronghold of Hezbollah and all the people living here are Hezbollah sympathizers," said a man who was acting as a guide for the media in Dahieh. "Israel expects that with such raids, Hezbollah will react, or at least its leadership would visit the neighborhood, and that's how Israel would get a picture of Hezbollah's presence in the heartland of Lebanon." The man did not identify himself, saying he was just "a neighbor".

Israel's desire to expand the war in Lebanon is apparent from other instances as well.

The flights of Israeli drones over Beirut had been irregular over the past two weeks. However, that changed on Wednesday as the drones flew for most of that day and into Thursday night. Sources close to the Lebanese intelligence services maintained that this new development had resulted in all Lebanese security forces being put on high alert as a large-scale conflict was now expected.

Endless war?

America's military leaders know better than to get ahead of their civilian masters in speaking on critical policy matters. So when two top generals tell Congress that Iraq may be heading toward civil war, as they did this week, presumably the White House knew what was coming.

Perhaps that explains why Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Gen. John Abizaid, commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East, qualified their concerns by saying they think the situation can be salvaged. But it leaves open the questions troubling many Americans: How much longer must U.S. troops stay in Iraq? When, if ever, will Iraqis be able to take charge of a situation that seems to be spinning out of control?

Neither Pace nor Abizaid had the answers. Nor did Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, who, while calling the daily carnage in Iraq tragic, insisted that the Iraqi government and armed forces "are holding together." And Rumsfeld admonished senators criticizing what they called a "failed strategy": "We should consider how our words can be used by our deadly enemy."

Americans have been hearing such rhetoric since the early days of President Bush's global war on terrorism. But this is not 2001, and Americans are less willing to be patient as the American body count nears 2,600 in a conflict that did not have to become part of that war.

FEWER than half of Australia's young people believe in a god and many believe there is little truth in religion, a new study has found.

The three-year national study, a joint project between Monash University, the Australian Catholic University and the Christian Research Association, found many young people followed a secular, rather than a religious path.

The study, The Spirit of Generation Y, found just 48 per cent of Generation Y, defined as those being born between 1976 and 1990, believed in a god.

Andrew Singleton, from Monash University, a co-author of the study, said they were surprised by the findings.

"It's well known that there has been a turn away from church attendance and participation in young people," he said. "But we thought there was going to be a move towards alternative spiritualities.

9/11 film criticised by families

Edwards wants immediate Iraq withdrawal

MOULTONBORO, N.H. --Former vice presidential candidate John Edwards, who is considering another run for the Democratic presidential nomination, said Saturday the United States should start pulling troops out of Iraq immediately.

The former senator from North Carolina told reporters America should "make it clear (to Iraqis) we are leaving, and the best way is to start leaving. We should take 40,000 combat troops out now."

Edwards, who has said he regretted his vote as a U.S. senator authorizing President Bush to invade Iraq, said he would ask the country's military leaders for a strategy "to have the (rest of the) troops out in roughly 12 to 18 months."

"There is no chance other countries in the world will help Iraq as long as we are an occupying force," he said.

On the Israeli-Hezbollah fighting in the Middle East, Edwards noted he was on the Israel-Lebanon border only three weeks ago, and said Israel "has absolutely the right to defend itself," though he said there "needs to be an international security force in southern Lebanon."

Edwards was making a number of stops Saturday in New Hampshire, which he has visited several times this year as he considers another run for the presidency.

He was Sen. John Kerry's running mate in 2004 after making his own bid for the Democratic nomination.

Cuba braces for invasion of exiles

CUBA was on alert last night for a possible invasion by Miami-based exiles, as US President George W. Bush called on Cubans to push for democracy with strongman Fidel Castro sidelined by surgery.

"I urge the Cuban people to work for democratic change on the island," Mr Bush said in his first statement since Dr Castro temporarily ceded power to his brother Raul while he underwent gastrointestinal surgery.

"We will support you in your effort to build a transitional government in Cuba committed to democracy, and we will take note of those, in the current Cuban regime, who obstruct your desire for a free Cuba."

The island has largely been calm since the power transfer. However, tension began to rise early yesterday with announcements in the official media of "combat alerts" and reservists being called to military duty.

"The means of combat are ready to defend us," announced the front page of the official newspaper Granma.

Other government-controlled news media called on Cubans to face "the threats of the empire and the terrorist mafia". The former refers to the US and the latter to the US-based Cuban exile community.

I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy, but I think Molly Ivins' suggestion ("Imagine: Wisdom in the White House," July 27) for Bill Moyers to be entered by the Democratic party in the 2008 presidential race is one of the best ideas I've heard in years. The presence of someone of his intellectual and moral caliber in the presidential contest would - in itself - be one of the best things that ever happened to U.S. politics - although I have no illusions that he would not be crucified.

Not tied to any particular political party, I would just like to see us begin to choose responsible representatives at all levels of government, especially in the presidency.

Most people don't need to be told that the world is looking down the barrel of the greatest clash of civilizations ever, from which there will be no winners. If ever there was a time for someone with integrity, understanding, insight and compassion to be president of the U.S.A., now may be our last opportunity.

I wish Rev. Moyers would seriously consider the proposition. He would have my unconditional support and best wishes - and my condolences if he should succumb to the challenge.

I have tried to put the pieces together as to why Bush is the way he is. At a young age Bush would listen to his grandfather Prescott Bush tell stories about Hitler. These stories imprinted upon Bush's brain. He was fascinated by Hitler's life. From these stories Bush's goal has been his desire to emulate Hitler.

At age twelve Bush would put firecrackers in the mouth of a frog. He would light the firecracker; the firecracker would explode; and the frog would blow up. These experiences would not satisfy Bush. He wanted to go onto bigger explosions.

Now Bush has his finger on the nuclear bomb. His imprinted brain of explosions will not set him free. He is driven to continue the explosions. These thoughts are embedded in his brain forever. They will not go away and we will see how he must act out these future explosions. The nuclear bomb will be his biggest explosion that Bush ca initiate. Human death will be part of these explosions.

The wholesale destruction of all of Lebanon by Israel and the US Pentagon does not make any sense. Why bomb roads, roads, bridges, ports, fuel depots in Sunni and Christian areas that have nothing to do with Shiite Hizbullah in the deep south? And, why was Hizbullah's rocket capability so crucial that it provoked Israel to this orgy of destruction? Most of the rockets were small katyushas with limited range and were highly inaccurate. They were an annoyance in the Occupied Golan Heights, especially the Lebanese-owned Shebaa Farms area. Hizbullah had killed 6 Israeli civilians since 2000. For this you would destroy a whole country?

Towards the beginning of the war, Israeli air strikes target five of the six oil storage tanks at the electrical plant in El-Jiye city. El-Jiya is a small coastal city roughly 20 miles south of Beirut. The prevailing winds blow towards the north, up the coast, so this translates into most of the coast of Lebanon north of that city now being smeared with 50,000 tons of fuel oil.

On Friday my photographer friend Raoul, a British photographer named Mark and I headed up to the coastal city of Byblos to see how the fishermen there and local tourist economy were holding up. I'd seen some of the footage of the oil choked boat harbor in Byblos, and wanted to see it for myself.

After a nice drive up the highway north to Byblos, (there is much more traffic on the roads now that most of the air strikes have let up in the area north of Beirut), we arrived to find the harbor nearly completely filled with oil

In early 2003, when the final plans for the war were being drawn up, I guess a robust insurgency was also a hypothetical that they would not get into.

This just gives us a greater look into the workings of the administration, where they consider things that they don’¥ want to happen as "hypothetical", and that line of thinking is what has put us in the situation we are today.

Civil war risk in Iraq rises, U.S. commander says

The commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East has bluntly warned a Senate committee that sectarian violence in Iraq, especially in Baghdad, had grown so severe that the country could slide toward civil war.

The commander, General John Abizaid, also acknowledged Thursday that because the security situation remained so unstable, significant reductions in U.S. forces were unlikely before the end of this year.

Asked by Senator Carl Levin of Michigan, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, whether Iraq risked falling into civil war, Abizaid replied, "I believe that the sectarian violence is probably as bad as I've seen it, in Baghdad in particular, and that if not stopped, it is possible that Iraq could move towards civil war." But, he later added, he did not think civil war was probable.

Those of us who have long been supporters of Armageddon have naturally been greatly cheered by way the president of the United States has been embracing our cause. Our desire to bring chaos, death and destruction to a greater swathe of humanity has, in the past, often been frustrated by peacemakers and do-gooders of all shades of the political spectrum.

For too long, our aspirations have been derided and criticised. In fact, to be blunt, for more than two millennia we have had to put up with opprobrium and vilification, but now all that will be a thing of the past, for in George Bush we have found an ally - indeed, we have found a leader. A man who is prepared to place himself at the head of the forces of destruction and misery, and who is unafraid of the opinion of the rest of the world.

George Bush has finally put Armageddon firmly on the political agenda, and it is likely to stay there for the foreseeable future.

This means that we Armageddonists need keep to the shadows no longer. Bush and his colleagues in the White House have given us credibility and respectability. They have made our goal their goal, and death, disease, war and famine are now the most likely fate for more people in the Middle East than we Armageddonists had ever dared to hope for.

What is also particularly gratifying - after this long wait - is that George could not have chosen a better spot on Earth for the "End of Things" to begin, nor a more appropriate agent than Israel to get the ball rolling.

After all "Armageddon" is a Hebrew word. It has come to signify "the end of times" or the arrival of catastrophic events, involving huge loss of life. In its origins, however, Har-Mageddon meant simply "the mountain of Megiddo" - Megiddo being a site in Israel close to the border with Lebanon.

It is certainly a place that has seen a lot of catastrophe in its time. Although there has not been a city at Megiddo for over 2,000 years, there are, nevertheless the remains of more than 20 different cities on the site, dating from 3,000 BC. That's an awful lot of human death and destruction.

So it's the perfect place for George to unleash the horsemen of the Apocalypse, and, as Armageddonists, we applaud him. The current assault on Lebanese civilians is sure to swell the ranks of would-be terrorists beyond even our wildest dreams, spreading the violence and mayhem not only throughout the Middle East but into the homelands of America and Britain.

As for the country of Lebanon itself, we Armageddonists predict that, like Iraq, it will sink into a morass of sectarian violence that will fill morgues of the future that have not yet been built. But more than that, we Armegeddonists confidently look forward to chaos and havoc quickly getting out of hand and beyond the control of those who started the conflict. It's all part of the fun.

So Armageddonists of the world! Let us unite in praise of George Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld. Let us thank these men for bringing our dreams of violence and disorder to fruition.

Let us hope that whatever half-baked notions fill what passes for their minds, they will continue on this irreversible path to perdition from which the whole world recoils, but seems powerless to stop.

GOP Chair Says Democrats Weak on Terror

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (AP) -- The head of the Republican Party accused Democrats of being willing to surrender the tools necessary to combat terrorism as the GOP tries to capitalize on its national security advantage in a tough election year.

Faced with President Bush's low approval ratings and diminishing support for the Iraq war, the Republican strategy is to make the war on terrorism a central campaign issue and argue that Democrats hold a pre-Sept. 11 view of the world.

Ken Mehlman, the chairman of the Republican National Committee, stressed that argument in a speech Friday at the organization's two-day summer meeting, similar to points made by White House adviser Karl Rove in January.

"America faces a critical question," Mehlman said in his prepared text. "Will we elect leaders who recognize we're at war and want to use every tool to win it, or politicians who would surrender important tools we need to win?"

As The Army Times reported, senior officers in the Marine Corps Systems Command knew that and bought and fielded the Point Blank body armor anyway, without telling commanders in the field about the vests' shortcomings.

And the company that manufactured the vests made a whole lot of money.

Rumours of a link between the US first family and the Nazi war machine have circulated for decades. Now the Guardian can reveal how repercussions of events that culminated in action under the Trading with the Enemy Act are still being felt by today's president

George Bush's grandfather, the late US senator Prescott Bush, was a director and shareholder of companies that profited from their involvement with the financial backers of Nazi Germany.

The Guardian has obtained confirmation from newly discovered files in the US National Archives that a firm of which Prescott Bush was a director was involved with the financial architects of Nazism.

His business dealings, which continued until his company's assets were seized in 1942 under the Trading with the Enemy Act, has led more than 60 years later to a civil action for damages being brought in Germany against the Bush family by two former slave labourers at Auschwitz and to a hum of pre-election controversy.

The evidence has also prompted one former US Nazi war crimes prosecutor to argue that the late senator's action should have been grounds for prosecution for giving aid and comfort to the enemy.

Fed admits US recession on cards

The United States faces almost a 40 per cent chance of slipping into recession in the next 12 months, according to the Federal Reserve's own market model.

As Fed chairman Ben Bernanke prepares to decide whether to raise American interest rates for the 18th time on Tuesday, bond prices and the high level of borrowing costs are now showing a 38 per cent chance of recession, according to a model published by Fed economist Jonathan Wright earlier this year.

After official payroll figures released on Friday showed that the economy created fewer jobs than expected last month, Wall Street began predicting Bernanke would halt the Fed's rate-hiking campaign this week. But some economists believe the central bank has already gone too far.

'They've hiked far too much,' said Ian Shepherdson of High Frequency Economics. 'The Fed has a long and inglorious history of raising rates too far, and cutting them too far.' He expects growth in the world's largest economy to have ground to a halt by the end of the year, even if Bernanke chooses to leave rates unchanged this week.

"It appears, rather, that the subject was a member of the Nazi party," government investigators concluded.

At the same time the last Brown Brothers Harriman client assets were seized, Prescott Bush announced his Senate campaign that led to his election in 1952.

I'm afraid now, that what may still come to pass is a reign far more savage and barbaric than that of the Nazis. Already, appeasement has been fruitless - it only encourages the brazen to escalate their arrogance and braggadocio. Americans support Bush - by a generous majority - and mass media sings his praises while indicting his detractors - or silencing their opinions completely. The American people seem to care only about the domestic economic situation - and even in that, they are in complete denial. They don't want to hear about Iraq, and Afghanistan is already forgotten. Even the Democratic opposition supports the occupation of Iraq. Everyone seems to agree that Saddam Hussein deserves to be executed -with or without a trial. 'Visitors' are fingerprinted. Guilty until proven innocent. Snipers are on New York City rooftops. When do the Stryker teams start appearing on American streets? They're perfectly suited for 'Homeland Security' - and they've had a trial run in Iraq. The Constitution has been suspended - until further notice. Dick Cheney just mentioned it may be for decades - even a generation, as Rice asserts as well. Is this the start of the 1000 year reign of this new collection of thugs? So it would seem.

I can only hope that in the coming year there will be some sign - some hint - that we are not becoming that which we abhor. The Theory of the Grotesque fares all too well these days. It may not be Nazi Germany - it might be a lot worse.

Life in Hell: Baghdad Diary

A knot begins to form in my stomach exactly at 8 a.m., when I step into the small Fokker F-28 jet that will take me and 50 other passengers from Amman, Jordan, to Baghdad. I know what lies ahead: an hour's uneventful flying over unchanging desert, followed by the world's scariest landing--a steep, corkscrewing plunge into what used to be Saddam Hussein International Airport. Then an eight-mile drive into the city along what's known as the Highway of Death. I've made this trip more than 20 times since Royal Jordanian's civilian flights started three years ago, and you'd expect it would get easier. But the knot takes hold in my stomach every time.

I scan the cabin for familiar faces. The 50-odd passengers include the usual suspects--Western "security consultants" in faux fatigues, Iraqi officials in dark suits. And some surprises, like the three women in white Indian saris with blue borders. The nuns from the Missionaries of Charity, Mother Teresa's order, are a comforting sight. One of them, Sister Benedetta, kindly gives me a laminated picture of the soon-to-be saint and a genuine relic--a microchip-size piece of Teresa's sari. A lapsed Hindu, I'm nonetheless grateful for any and all gifts that purport to holiness; somewhere in my bags are a tiny sandalwood Ganesha, pages of the New Testament and a string of Islamic prayer beads. In Iraq, you want to have God--anybody's God--within easy reach.

Sister Benedetta smiles politely when I joke that many of our fellow passengers will be calling to their maker when the plane begins its hellish descent. To avoid being shot down by Iraqi insurgents, the pilot must stay at 30,000 ft. until the plane is directly over Baghdad airport, then bank into a spiraling dive, straightening up just yards from the runway. If you're looking out the window, it can feel as if the plane is in a free fall from which it can't possibly pull out. I've learned from experience to ask for an aisle seat.

The only thing worse than the view from the window is being seated next to someone who hasn't taken the flight before. During one especially difficult landing in 2004, a retired American cop wouldn't stop screaming "Oh, God! Oh, God!" I finally had to slap him on the face--on instructions from the flight attendant. Another time the man in the window seat was a muscular, heavily tattooed Polynesian ex-commando who spent an hour telling me of his life as a mercenary in a succession of South Pacific island nations--stories that often ended with his punching, stabbing or shooting somebody. When the Fokker began its steep descent, he began whimpering to Jesus and grabbing my forearm so tight, I felt my palm go cold from lack of circulation.

The Bush Family & Eugenics

In the early 1950s, Gordon Gray, a close friend and frequent golfing partner of Prescott Bush was appointed as the first director of the Psychological Strategy Board under Eisenhower. Later in 1958, Gray became National Security Advisor to Eisenhower. Gray's son, C. Bowden served as George Bush's (Prescott's son) legal counsel throughout the evolving Iran-Contra scandal.

In 1958, William Draper was appointed to chair a committee which was advising President Dwight Eisenhower on the use of military aid to other countries. The appointment was made possible by Prescott Bush and Gordon Gray, both whom were frequent golfing partners of Eisenhower. Dillon and Reed employed Draper during the 1930s. It was with Draper's help that Prescott Bush was able to float the largest bond issue for Nazi Germany. Draper later served in post war Germany as the head of the economic unit in charge of dismantling the cartel system.

Draper was a racist and major funder of the eugenic movement. Draper used his position as committee chairman to direct the focus of the committee away from military aid to the danger of over population in third world countries. His racist views were dismissed by the Eisenhower administration. Draper went on to fund the Population Crisis Committee with money from the Rockefellers and du Ponts. In the 1960s, Draper served as an advisor to LBJ. He was instrumental in getting the Johnson administration to use the overseas aid program to fund birth control in non-white countries.

The Bush Rockefeller connection goes back to pre-WWI and Samuel Bush, president of Buckeye Casting. Samuel Bush was also director of several Ohio and Pennsylvania railroads. The railroads worked closely with the Ohio bred Standard Oil. Standard held a minority interest in Buckeye Castings. In turn, railroads transporting Rockefeller oil were required to purchase all of their couplings and related railroad equipment from Buckeye.

George Bush, Prescott's son, was a vocal supporter of Draper's policies. In 1964, he campaigned in Texas against the Civil Rights Act. In 1969, as congressman, Bush arranged hearings on the dangers posed by the birth of too many black babies.

In 1972, as ambassador to the United Nations, George Bush arranged the first official contract between the American government and the Sterilization League of America, which had, by then, changed its name, yet again, to the Association for Voluntary Surgical Contraception. Under this contract, the United States taxpayer was burdened with the cost of sterilization programs in the non white third world.

BOMBAY, 6 August 2006 In a country widely referred to as the world's largest democracy, the Indian government has succumbed to mounting Israeli pressure and ordered a nationwide ban on the broadcast of Arab television channels.

The Indian government's ban on Arab television stations is in complete contrast to the friendship that Arab countries imagine exists with their neighbor across the Arabian Sea. It seems the ban is a move to ensure that Indians do not get to see the atrocities that are presently being committed by Israel in Lebanon and the occupied territories.

Nabila Al-Bassam, a Saudi businesswoman on a trip to Bombay, told Arab News how she became exasperated at not being able to watch Arab channels at Bombay's leading five-star Oberoi Hotel. When she took up the issue with the hotel manager, she was told that Arab television channels had been banned across India.

A perplexed Al-Bassam then sent an SMS to Arab News Editor in Chief Khaled Almaeena to verify whether this was indeed the case. Oberoi Hotel tells me that the government of India has banned all Arab TV channels. Why? I hate watching CNN and BBC, she wrote to Almaeena.

Talking to Arab News, Oberoi Hotel Manager Mohit Nirula did allude to the fact that a ban was in place. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has laid down certain rules. It is our duty to abide by and follow the rules of the country,he told this correspondent.

BEDFORD, N.H. (AP)—Çlistering heat was just what Sandi Fontaine needed to bake cookies for her co-workers—Øn the dash of her Toyota Rav4.

With temperatures soaring Wednesday, Fontaine placed two trays of cookie dough on the dashboard, shut the doors and retreated inside to her air conditioned office.

It's been about 48 hours since Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee issued a sweeping indictment of the Bush administration's casual approach to law-breaking in a report called, "The Constitution in Crisis."

How's the media reaction been?

Using Lexis-Nexis and Google News, it appears that the only mainstream media outlet literally, the only one to even mention the release of the report was CNN, when Jack Cafferty devoted 200 words to the subject late last week.

To be fair, the timing of the release wasn't ideal. A Friday afternoon in August was probably not the way to maximize exposure for the report.

Regardless, this is a well-documented, thoroughly-researched report from congressional Democrats about the Bush administration possibly violating over two dozen federal laws and regulations some of them multiple times. And yet, nothing in the AP; nothing in any of the major dailies; nothing on ABC, CBS, or NBC. Not one word.

First, many of us frequently feel like congressional Democrats need to be aggressive and go on the offensive more, but let's not forget, even when they do, much the media blows off what Dems have to say.

And second, if Dems accuse the administration of criminal activity, and it's widely ignored, does it really make a sound?

McDonald's is the largest and best-known global food service retailer with more than 30,000 restaurants in 121 countries.[8]

McDonalds chairman and CEO Jack M. Greenberg is an honorary director of the American-Israel Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc., of Metropolitan Chicago.[9]

According to the Chicago Jewish Community Online (website of the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago), McDonalds Corporation whose global headquarters is based just outside Chicago is a major corporate partner of the Jewish United Fund and Jewish Federation.[1].

Through its Israel Commission, the Jewish United Fund "works to maintain American military, economic and diplomatic support for Israel; monitors and, when necessary, responds to media coverage of Israel"[2].

The Jewish United Fund runs "Fun-filled Summer Family Missions to Israel" (the next one is on Aug 19 2002) where families get to "visit an army base and meet with Israeli soldiers" and "visit our sister city, Kiryat Gat and see the important work we are doing there"[3]. Kiryat Gat, you may be aware from the Boycott Intel Campaign, is built on stolen Palestinian land - the lands of the villages of Iraq Al Manshiya and Al-Faluja whose residents were ethnically cleansed in 1949 in contravention of International Law[6]. Through its "Partnership to Israel" programme, the Jewish United Fund provides $1.3 million annually[5] to help the development of Kiryat Gat and to promote further illegal settlement there.

In the Jewish United Funds outreach program they pay for Christian leaders and American high school kids to visit Israel and be fed zionist lies.[4]

McDonalds entered the Israeli market in 1993 and now has 80 resturants across Israel, providing employment to some 3000 Israelis.[7]

Dr Ang Swee Chai grew up supporting Israel. Arabs, she was told, were terrorists. But in 1982, on the television she saw the relentless bombing of Beirut by Israeli planes. Shocked, her view of Israel began to change. It was then that she heard of an international appeal for an orthopaedic surgeon to treat war victims in Beirut. The petit woman - she was just under 1.5 meters - resigned her job in London, bade her husband farewell and set out on a journey to civil war Beirut, there she was to eye-witness the Sabra-Shatila massacres*.

With her husband Francis Khoo, and some friends, Dr Ang Swee Chai helped to form the British charity, Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), following the 1982 Sabra-Shatila massacres. In 1987, PLO chairman Yasser Arafat awarded Dr Ang Swee Chai the "Star of Palestine" the highest award for service to the Palestinian people.

In her talk, given at a West London Mosque on 10th December 2004, she shares with us some of her experiences of Lebanon and Palestine. Many of the slides she uses in her talk are reproduced below with relevant captions and a time code so that you may follow the slides with the audio.

Some Israeli Attacks Amount to War Crimes
(Beirut, August 3, 2006) ・Israeli forces have systematically failed to distinguish between combatants and civilians in their military campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon, Human Rights Watch said in report released today. The pattern of attacks in more than 20 cases investigated by Human Rights Watch researchers in Lebanon indicates that the failures cannot be dismissed as mere accidents and cannot be blamed on wrongful Hezbollah practices. Israeli pilots 'deliberately miss' targets

At least two Israeli fighter pilots have deliberately missed civilian targets in Lebanon as disquiet grows in the military about flawed intelligence, The Observer has learnt. Sources say the pilots were worried that targets had been wrongly identified as Hizbollah facilities.

Voices expressing concern over the armed forces' failures are getting louder. One Israeli cabinet minister said last week: 'We gave the army so much money. Why are we getting these results?' Last week saw Hizbollah's guerrilla force, dismissed by senior Israeli military officials as 'ragtag', inflict further casualties on one of the world's most powerful armies in southern Lebanon. At least 12 elite troops, the equivalent of Britain's SAS, have already been killed, and by yesterday afternoon Israel's military death toll had climbed to 45.

As the bodies pile up, so the Israeli media has begun to turn, accusing the military of lacking the proper equipment, training and intelligence to fight a guerrilla war in Lebanon. Israel's Defence Minister, Amir Peretz, on a tour of the front lines, was confronted by troubled reserve soldiers who told him they lacked proper equipment and training.

...As one well-connected Israeli expert put it: 'If we have such good information in Lebanon, how come we still don't know the hideout of missiles and launchers?... If we don't know the location of their weapons, why should we know which house is a Hizbollah house?'

Ceasefire dead before it starts

HOPES of an imminent end to almost a month of war were dashed last night when Hezbollah vowed to ignore a UN-brokered ceasefire and Lebanon blackballed the draft resolution.

...Hezbollah said the French-US plan would fail because it had ignored its demand that Israeli forces had to withdraw from southern Lebanon before the Shia militia would agree to stop firing rockets into Israel and retreat to the north.

The Lebanese Government said the plan largely ignored its blueprint for peace -- primarily, the withdrawal of Israeli forces.

Jerusalem welcomed the plan, saying it would agree to the UN interim force remaining in southern Lebanon while the international force was assembled.

John Howard said he feared the deal would collapse because the two root causes of Middle Eastern tensions were not addressed: the settlement of the Palestinian issue and the recognition by the Arab world of Israel's right to exist.

Israeli ministers conceded last night the deal was unlikely to stop the fighting, which has killed more than 1000 people in Lebanon and Israel. "Even if it is passed, it is doubtful that Hezbollah will honour the resolution and halt its fire," said Israeli Justice Minister Haim Ramon.

Hezbollah Rocket Kills 10 in Israel

Kfar Giladi, Israel - A rocket fired by Hezbollah landed in a parking lot on a kibbutz where Israeli soldiers are staying here, killing 10 people and seriously wounding at least four in the deadliest attack by the militia since the war with Israel began almost a month ago.

The rocket sprayed ball bearings in a deadly cloud up to 60 meters in diameter, leaving a scene that eyewitnesses and even one war-weary ambulance driver described as the most horrific carnage they had ever seen.

Witnesses said they believed all of the victims were reserve Israeli army soldiers, but an Israeli military spokesman, Maj. Zvika Golan, said that he could only confirm that the victims were Israeli citizens.

Hagel: Iraq Is 'A Hopeless, Winless Situation'

Appearing today on CBS Face the Nation, Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) described Iraq as "a hopeless, winless situation." He harshly criticized the Bush administration’≥ recent decision to increase troop levels calling it "very wrong" and "irresponsible."

Hagel said Iraq was "headed" toward a civil war. He was adamant that "we cannot put American troops, and ask them to do the things that we're asking them to do in the middle of a civil war." Hagel added, "I hope this administration has got a way out of this."

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - BP Exploration Alaska, Inc. began shutting down the Prudhoe Bay oil field Sunday after discovering unexpectedly severe corrosion and a small spill from a transit pipeline.
Prudhoe Bay represents about half of Alaska's oil production and about 8 percent of U.S. production, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Company officials said it would take days to shut down the oil field. Once completed, it's expected to reduce oil field production by 400,000 barrels a day.

Lebanon conflict dashing U.S. hopes for region

Anger toward America is high, extremists are on the upswing and hopes for democracy in the Middle East lie dashed. The Lebanon war is creating dangerous ripples in the war on terror, the future of Iraq - even the effort to keep nuclear weapons from dangerous hands.

"America, we hate you more than ever," Ammar Ali Hassan wrote in the independent Egyptian daily Al-Masry Al-Youm, in the kind of visceral, slap-in-the-face rhetoric boiling across the region.

So far, the violence has not led allies to take steps that directly hurt America's strategic interests, such as forcing the military from its regional headquarters in Qatar or its naval base in Bahrain. And there are those who see the conflict as the bloody but necessary prelude to a real assessment by the Arab world of its choices: democracy and peace, or Islamic extremism and warfare.

Yet so far, almost every U.S. and European goal for the region - keeping oil prices stable, promoting democracy, fighting extremists, strengthening moderates - is damaged.

Others worry terror groups might already be directly benefiting. Al-Qaida’≥ No. 2 leader has called on supporters to wage holy war against Israel in a clear effort to turn the hostility to its advantage.

More broadly, a wide swath of even progressive, middle-class people across the Mideast are outraged at the Israeli bombing of Lebanon and in part blame the United States. That means the long-sought U.S. effort to win Arab and Muslim "hearts and minds" - so crucial to fighting terrorism - has been dealt a huge blow.

Beautiful, heartbreaking essay.

The front page of every paper I looked at yesterday carried pictures of children dead at the hands of Israeli bombs. Bodies covered with scarves or shawls, as if to protect them from the brutal sun. Tiny feet showing the age of far too many of these victims. These were not terrorists. They were not soldiers or spies. They were children. Learning to find a place in the world. Was the next great peace maker killed today, before she learned to speak and draw to her side the hearts of the people she would have led, if not for the bombs? What crime was committed by the pregnant woman who died, taking with her the unborn child she carried?

If you are not horrified by the actions of your country yet, then you simply have not tried to see what is happening. You have looked away too often, too soon. Really look at what your country and her allies are doing half a world away. In Lebanon the seeds of terror are being planted deep and well watered with the blood of martyrs, not by wild eyed Islamic clerics demanding the death of the infidel, but by the power hungry, foolish leaders of Israel and the United States. Like dragon’≥ teeth, every bomb we drop brings new enemies.

We stand pariah to the world and justly so. There is a weary rage in me that knows no direction. No target properly presents itself. No proper expression comes to mind for that rage. No amount of giving vent to that rage will breathe life into one dead and decaying tiny corpse. Weeping brings no relief.

This time, don’t let yourself turn away. Don’t just look and say “how sad.” Connect...

You fight the global war against jihadist Islam with the political parties you have.

We have two. One is the Republican party, led by George W. Bush. Its heart and mind are mostly in the right place. Its performance as a governing party in time of war is, admittedly, another matter. Do we have a strategy for victory in Iraq? Not if one judges by Donald Rumsfeld's testimony last week before the Senate Armed Services Committee. It shouldn't be too much to ask for competent leadership at the Defense Department in time of war, leadership characterized by a willingness to learn from mistakes, instead of an arrogant (and oddly defeatist) smugness.

But at least we have a president who knows we are at war with jihadist Islam. And he is willing to stake his presidency on that fight, and to support others, like Israel, who are in the same fight.

It's become clear, by contrast, that the Democratic party doesn't really want to fight jihadism. It's just too difficult. Last week the entire Democratic congressional leadership sent President Bush a letter on Iraq. The Democrats didn't chastise the administration for failing to do what it takes to achieve victory there. They didn't call for a larger military, or for more troops in Iraq, or for new tactics. Rather, they seemed to criticize the (belated) redeployment of troops "into an urban war zone in Baghdad." And they complained that "there has been virtually no diplomatic effort to resolve sectarian differences, no regional effort to
establish a broader security framework, and no attempt to revive a struggling reconstruction effort"--as if these are the keys to success.

Things Get Ugly When Bush 'Trusts His Gut'

When President Bush was caught on tape saying to Tony Blair, "See the irony is what they need to do is get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this shit and it's over," more than a few progressives said to themselves, "Well that's a trenchant analysis of the situation, Sherlock." And more than a few conservatives said, "Damn straight" as Michelle Malkin put it, "Sometimes, profanity is called for."

Not that in mid-2006 anyone needed more proof that Bush is, depending on your perspective, either a simpleton or an admirably forthright straight talker who cuts to the chase. But as more and more evidence of the administration's incompetence and hubris is revealed, we are presented with more proof that under George W. Bush, U.S. policies are governed by a strange amalgam of impulse and fantasy.

As Newsweek told us this week, Bush "still trusts his gut to tell him what's right, and he still expects others to follow his lead." One might have thought Bush would have learned by now to view the proclamations of his gut with some suspicion - but then, that would be asking the president to rely on evidence and experience to make conclusions.

And it isn’¥ only friendly reporters like those at Newsweek who have noted the way policy is dictated by The Decider’≥ intestinal rumblings. One of the many disturbing pictures that emerges from Ron Suskind’≥ new book, The One Percent Doctrine, is the way Bush's preference for making decisions not on the basis of facts and analysis but on his "gut" meshed so perfectly with Dick Cheney's desire not to let facts and analysis get in the way of his visions of empire.

He has been one of the most open Senators. He also appears to be more moderate and he doesn't spend every waking moment looking to add to his wealth. When I think of Hagel I think of a straight shooter, someone who is honest about his vote in Congress but I too know very little about him.

ES&S is a subsidiary of McCarthy Group Inc., which is jointly held by the holding firm and the Omaha World-Herald Co., which publishes the state's largest newspaper. The voting machine company makes sophisticated optical scan and touch-screen vote-counting devices that many states have begun buying in recent years.

An official at Nebraska's Election Administration estimated that ES&S machines tallied 85 percent of the votes cast in Hagel's 2002 and 1996 election races.

In 1996, ES&S operated as American Information Systems Inc. (AIS). The company became ES&S after merging with Business Records Corp. in 1997.

In a disclosure form filed in 1996, covering the previous year, Hagel, then a Senate candidate, did not report that he was still chairman of AIS for the first 10 weeks of the year, as he was required to do.

Under the ethics panel's regulations, an "excepted investment fund" is one that is: "publicly traded (or available) or widely diversified."

Republican Senator Chuck Hagel disclosed in public documents that he was the Chairman of American Information Systems and claimed between a $1 to 5 million investment in the McCarthy Group. In 1997, American Information Systems purchased Business Records Corp. (BRC), formerly Texas-based election company Cronus Industries, to become ES&S. One of the BRC owners was Carolyn Hunt of the right-wing Hunt oil family, which supplied much of the original money for the Council on National Policy.

Due to the contracting out of services, confidentiality agreements between the State of Nebraska and the company kept this matter out of the public eye. Hagel's first election victory was described as a "stunning upset" by one Nebraska newspaper.

Hagel's official biography states, "Prior to his election to the U.S. Senate, Hagel worked in the private sector as the President of McCarthy and Company, an investment banking firm based in Omaha, Nebraska and served as Chairman of the Board of American Information Systems." During the first Bush presidency, Hagel served as Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer of the 1990 Economic Summit of Industrialized Nations (G-7 Summit).

Bob Urosevich was the Programmer and CEO at AIS, before being replaced by Hagel. Bob now heads Diebold Election Systems and his brother Todd is a top executive at ES&S. Bob created Diebold's original electronic voting machine software. Thus, the brothers Urosevich, originally funded by the far Right, figure in the counting of approximately 80% of electronic voting in the United States.

The Hubris of the Neocons

It took US policymakers and the American public many years, perhaps decades, to realize that hubris--arrogant and uninformed self-confidence--had played a crucial and negative role in the Vietnam tragedy. As Richard Helms, the CIA director for much of the Vietnam War, said in 1981, "We were dealing with a complicated cultural and ethnic problem which we never came to understand. In other words, it was our ignorance or innocence, if you will, which led us to misassess, not comprehend, and make a lot of wrong decisions, which one way or another helped to affect the outcome." This time out, the nation is more fortunate: the perils of hubris have become evident within days of the first attack.

The year-long run-up to the war allowed for much debate: why it was needed (or why not), what it would take to win, how the Iraqis and the rest of the world would react. Most advocates of war argued that it would not be a difficult endeavor and that the Iraqis would be grateful for a US invasion and welcome what American war-backers called "liberation."

Neither of those propositions has panned out. Yes, it's early. But the point was that the collapse of the Iraqi forces and the dancing in the streets would happen early. Shortly before the war was launched, Vice President Dick Cheney predicted Saddam Hussein's troops would "step aside" and that victory would take "weeks rather than months." His remarks reflected the argument that war advocates--led by Washington's neoconservatives--had been pushing for over a year.

So You Say You Want a Revolucion?

President Bush may be offering Cuba the chance to refashion itself in America's image, but Cubans aren’¥ buying what Bush is selling.

Wonder why?

Indeed, for both Castro brothers and the politburo that rules Cuba, their entire raison d'etre is predicated upon independence from the United States. The same holds true even among Cuba's most economically and politically disadvantaged: the Cuban people themselves, who have demonstrated only a paltry amount enthusiasm for America's economically and politically "liberating" vision for its neighbor 90 miles to the south.

Why should this be?

First of all, poor as their nation may be, Cubans actually live quite well compared with neighboring capitalist countries in the Caribbean or Central America. And, speaking as someone who's made scores of trips to the island since the 1960s, I can tell you that Cuba looks poorer and more dilapidated than it is. Buildings need paint, but its 13 medical schools and 13 universities turn out well-prepared citizens; its applauded healthcare system claims an infant mortality rate lower than that of Washington, D.C.

Cubans who listen to Miami radio or Radio Marti (Voice of America) know of George Bush's disinclination to spend money on public service, an attitude very unlike that of Castro's government. And if U.S.-style capitalism should return to Cuba, many on the island know they would have to start paying for medical services and education that they now receive gratis.

Further, should the floodgates to America open, many islanders believe that the influx of land-hungry Miami-based Cubans will result in their losing title to their homes or having to pay exorbitant rents as their parents and grandparents did in the pre-revolutionary era.

I have a neighbor who is Cuban. She and her family had to leave. What about the homes they owned? The land, farms, property? She is realistic about the problems with claiming land so many years later. Many Cubans living in America, in my humble opinion, are not realistic about their future in Cuba. Do they still have a right to land? Do the Cubans in Cuba believe a person living in Miami for 40 years has the right to property they haven't set foot on for so many years? Cuba is a different country now. The revolution didn't come and go as many expected. If the exiled Cubans try to take the land back I believe there will be a terrible power struggle in Cuba.

What is the answer?

Well, I guess Castro is up and walking around.

The exile/return issue is faced by every person/refugee exiled from every country.

I do not think there is one answer. For some the past will have to be written off.

So very sad . .

BP Shutting Down Large Alaska Oil Field

Corrosion, Spill Prompt Shutdown of Alaska Oil Field; Output to Be Cut 400,000 Barrels a Day

ANCHORAGE, Alaska Aug 6, 2006 (AP)—†BP Exploration Alaska, Inc. began shutting down the Prudhoe Bay oil field Sunday after discovering unexpectedly severe corrosion and a small spill from a transit pipeline.

Prudhoe Bay represents about half of Alaska's oil production and about 8 percent of U.S. production, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Company officials said it would take days to shut down the oil field. Once completed, it's expected to reduce oil field production by 400,000 barrels a day.

"We regret that it is necessary to take this action and we apologize to the nation and the State of Alaska for the adverse impacts it will cause," BP America Chairman and President Bob Malone said in a prepared statement.
