Whoops, posted this before I saw the new thread.

Alan, the 9/11 commission had one mission, and one mission only, WHITEWASH!! Didn't you read what Clelland said?? Did you you read Griffin's book? If not, you should, also check the backgrounds of all the members, RED FLAG ALERT!

We are still waiting for winter to arrive here in the Owens Valley. It is amazingly warm, 75+ degrees and sunny. Very strange indeed. Mammoth should have several feet of snow by now. But when it comes, it will be sudden, then we will be buried and freezing! I will spend Christmas in Portland this year. I hear Mt. Hood is gearing up for a great season. Anyone here in the Portland-Vancouver metro area?

Freeh Charges 9/11 Commission Cover-up

Michael Crichton: Environment Fears Overblown
Has the U.S. Housing Market Peaked?
AFA Boycotts Target for Banning 'Christmas'
Conrad Black, Hollinger Execs Indicted

Former FBI Director Louis J. Freeh slammed the 9/11 Commission Thursday saying it
ignored Рor "summarily rejected" Рthe most critical piece of intelligence that could have prevented the horrific attacks of September 11, 2001.

Writing in the Wall Street Journal's opinion page, Freeh gave a blistering review of the Commission and says new revelations indicate it is "a good time for the country to make some assessments of the 9/11 Commission itself."

The former Bureau Director, who resigned his position just months before Sept. 11, 2001, points out that the U.S. government had learned of the identity of Mohammed Atta the year prior to the attacks. Atta was one of the ringleaders of the group, and piloted an American Airlines plane that slammed into one of the Twin Towers.

Freeh recounts that military intelligence operation code-named "Able Danger" concluded in February 2000 that military experts had identified Atta as an al-Qaida agent operating in the U.S.

"Subsequently, military officers assigned to Able Danger were prevented from sharing this critical information with FBI agents," Freeh writes. "Why?" he ponders, suggesting the failure to share such intelligence may be a smoking gun pointing at federal malfeasance in the case.

The 9/11 commission was a joke, just not a funny one. methinks bush is pissing someone off.

Bill Clinton Calls Iraq Big Mistake

Wednesday November 16, 2005 4:46 PM

By LARA SUKHTIAN

Associated Press Writer

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - Former President Clinton told Arab students Wednesday the United States made a ``big mistake'' when it invaded Iraq, stoking the partisan debate back home over the war.

Clinton cited the lack of planning for what would happen after Saddam Hussein was overthrown.

``Saddam is gone. It's a good thing, but I don't agree with what was done,'' Clinton told students at a forum at the American University of Dubai.

``It was a big mistake. The American government made several errors ... one of which is how easy it would be to get rid of Saddam and how hard it would be to unite the country.''

Clinton's remarks came when he was taking questions about the U.S. invasion, which began in 2003. His response drew cheers and a standing ovation at the end of the hour-long session.

Clinton said the United States had done some good things in Iraq: the removal of Saddam, the ratification of a new constitution and the holding of parliamentary elections.

``The mistake that they made is that when they kicked out Saddam, they decided to dismantle the whole authority structure of Iraq. ... We never sent enough troops and didn't have enough troops to control or seal the borders,'' Clinton said.

As the borders were unsealed, ``the terrorists came in,'' he said.

Clinton said it would have been better if the United States had left Iraq's ``fundamental military and social and police structure intact.''

Seems less Rhodes Scholar more "DUH" of the week award. I wonder if Hillary still wants to send more troops?

Military Body Armor Vests Recalled

Friday November 18, 2005 12:31 AM

By LOLITA C. BALDOR

Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - The military is recalling more than 18,000 protective vests because they did not meet ballistic test standards when the body armor was made up to five years ago.

It is the second recall in about six months.

Some vests in the latest recall may have been used in Iraq or Afghanistan. Made between 1999 and 2001, they were green or woodland camouflage, making it less likely they were used in the Gulf, where troops use the newer, desert-colored camouflage vests.

Marine Corps spokesman Maj. Douglas Powell and Army spokesman Paul Boyce said no Marines or soldiers were at risk because the vest met field test requirements.

The vests did not meet the higher manufacturing standards. Officials discovered the problems in September.

The company that made these vests should answer for their ineptitude, my guess is they will get bigger and better contracts. No accountability from this WH especially for their "private industry" military contractors (read: pals).

Shameful.

Businessman Charged in Iraq Scheme Ex-Con

Friday November 18, 2005 1:01 AM

By MARK SHERMAN

Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. occupation officials gave a man with a federal fraud conviction control of millions of dollars for Iraqi reconstruction. Now the man is charged with accepting kickbacks to steer contracts to a businessman.

Robert J. Stein Jr., 50, of Fayetteville, N.C., used some of the kickback money to make a restitution payment for his earlier conviction and his wife used some to pay federal taxes, according to a federal affidavit.

Stein faces conspiracy, money laundering, wire fraud and other charges stemming from his alleged role in helping Philip H. Bloom, a U.S. citizen who has lived in Romania for many years, get contracts in Iraq worth more than $13 million, federal authorities said Thursday.

Prosecutors say Bloom, 65, paid kickbacks of more than $630,000 to Stein and others. Bloom has been charged with conspiracy and money laundering stemming from an investigation that Justice Department officials say could result in additional charges against others.

Stein, who worked for the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq, and his wife bought real estate, cars, jewelry and home improvements with the money, according to federal affidavits made public Wednesday and Thursday. He and other CPA officials allegedly helped rig bids for Bloom and three companies he controlled for contracts to do work in Al-Hillah and Karbala, two cities 50 to 60 miles south of Baghdad.

This is the type of PR that kills.

Another recruitment poster for the terrorists.

The crook should be put into GITMO with the other "enemy combatants" but we know he is more likely to be invited to AEI to speak about the vast opportunities to milk every dollar out of the American taxpayers and help the Iraqis learn the profit at any cost philosophy.

Troll Alert!

Thanks for bringing back pleasant memories with your post of the "Argument Sketch" from the previous thread. PBS used to show the 1/2 Monty Python Show on Sunday nights in the mid '70's. My favorites were the one you posted as well as the classic "Dead Parrot," & the "Ministry of Silly Walks." Love the "Holy Grail" movie as well as "Life of Brian."

Hajji,

(From the previous thread) At least you showed some class by sticking around and cleaning the squeeze Cheeze off your Jeep. The cheese squeezer is probably still on the lam and probably has the dried cheese evidence caked on his truck. The only thing funnier than the story is that he will eventually be caught and probably spend a short amount of time in jail. When his cellmates ask him what he is in for do you think he will tell the truth?

Now for something completely different.

I have said it before and I'll say it again. There are 535 cowards serving this country in the Congress of the United States of America. They are empowered by the Constitution of this country to declare war. All they have to do is rescind the War Powers Act, which gave their constitutional authority to declare war to the President, an act that I believe is unconstitutional because the constitution can only be changed by amendment, not by a vote of Congress. Whether they were for or against the war in Iraq, the decision is Constitutionally theirs, not the Presidents. It needs to get back to being that way.

Posted by: TRH at November 17, 2005 08:30 PM

24

I agree TRH #22, the War Powers Act is an affront to the people. It may be possible for the senate to actually grow up and take responsability for their complicity in all of this, but first Dems will need to be in the majority. There is absolutely zero chance of Frist allowing that vote to take place. I could see Reid moving on it, especially after another "successful" year of Operation Iraqi Liberation. If things aren't better in a year, we just might see Congress reassert its authority. Maybe...
It would profoundly change my beliefs about the America. I'l remain skeptical til then

Posted by: ripple at November 17, 2005 08:54 PM

25

Ripple,

As long as they don't act, they all remain cowards. It doesn't matter who is in the majority and it will not affect the war in Iraq because they have aleady given the President that authority. It would, however, apply to all future wars if so declared. For Frist to allow a vote would not be a vote against this President, it would be a vote for the Constitution as it was originally written, not as it was illegally changed. I've never researched it but I would have thought certain by now this would have been challenged as unconstitutional.

Saladin,

Regarding 911 commission from previous thread. I bought a copy of the commission findings and it sits on a shelf. It sits there for history sake, not information sake. It is useless. The powerful protect the powerful and that is exactly what the commission did.

As Hajji would say, "Puhthetic!"

Dick Cheney: War Profiteer

by Tom Turnipseed

Questions persist about Vice-President CheneyÕs role in the ongoing investigation and scandal swirling about the White House. His chief of staff and confidante Lewis "Scooter" Libby has been indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice. LetÕs take a look at some personal incentives for CheneyÕs selling war to our country.

Cheney has pursued a political and corporate career to make himself very rich and powerful. He is the personification of a war profiteer who slid through the revolving door connecting the public and private sectors of the defense establishment on two occasions in a career that has served his relentless quest for power and profits.

As Defense Secretary, Mr. Cheney commissioned a study for the U.S. Department of Defense by Brown and Root Services (now Kellogg, Brown and Root), a wholly owned subsidiary of Halliburton. The study recommended that private firms like Halliburton should take over logistical support programs for U.S. military operations around the world. Just two years after he was Secretary of Defense, Cheney stepped through the revolving door linking the Department of Defense with defense contractors and became CEO of Halliburton. Halliburton was the principal beneficiary of CheneyÕs privatization efforts for our militaryÕs logistical support and Cheney was paid $44 million for five year's work with them before he slipped back through the revolving door of war profiteering to become Vice-President of the United States. When asked about the money he received from Halliburton, Cheney said. "I tell you that the government had absolutely nothing to do with it."

*****end of clip*****

Sure, no credibility issue there. Just like the others (Delay, Frist, et el) it is just like pulling a string on a sweater.

I am sure very few are going to believe such a lie now that the liars are proven to be such major unbelievable incredible liars.

To me, it does matter who is being empowered by the war powers act and who is just looking for profits. If the same person, no, no way. Not the right consideration for the lives put into harms way.

Military's recruiting woes worse than previously realized; Concerns that Pentagon misled Congress

A congressional report released Thursday that analyzes military recruiting and re-enlistment shows that the military has been failing to adequately fill many of its most vital combat job occupations for years, even as it is deep in enlistees for other positions, the New York Times is set to report in Friday editions, RAW STORY has learned. Excerpts.

The study, completed by the General Accountability Office, an investigative arm of Congress, shows that 41 percent of the military's 1,484 job specialties have been consistently understaffed over the past five years, while 19 percent maintained staffing levels beyond what the Pentagon had authorized.

The report suggests that for the active-duty Army, the Reserves, and the National Guard, the recruiting shortfalls of the past year have been even more severe than the aggregate numbers imply.

The policy of overfilling positions while others languished, the report said, raised concerns about whether the Pentagon had given Congress an accurate picture of its ability to maintain the force it needs for Iraq and Afghanistan.

Shepherds and nonviolence

By - Art Gish

At-Tuwani

18 February, 2005

Accompanying shepherds on their land, in addition to accompanying school
children, has become an important part of the work of Christian Peacemaker
Teams and Operation Dove in the village of At-Tuwani in the South Hebron
Hills.

The work began this winter with individual shepherds asking for
international accompaniment as they tried, without being seen, to take their
sheep to better grass near Israeli settler outposts. If the shepherds saw
any settlers or soldiers, they immediately ran away with their flocks.

It is very different now. Not only are shepherds from At-Tuwani joining
together to graze near settlements, but they are also coordinating with
shepherds from neighboring villages. They feel there is more safety in
greater numbers of shepherds and sheep. Now each day the shepherds inform
our team of where they will be congregating so that the team can have a
presence with them.

No longer do shepherds run when they see soldiers or settlers. Now they
expect the soldiers, police, and settlers to be there. Each day, the drama
is repeated. The settlers demand that the soldiers remove the shepherds.
The shepherds tell the police and soldiers that they should be able to graze
on their own land, and present copies of their deeds to the authorities. The
soldiers tell the shepherds they can not go on their land. But how can ten
soldiers stop fifteen shepherds and 400 sheep when they ignore the soldiers
and nonviolently walk out on their land? With the presence of international
observers and sometimes media, the power of the soldiers is greatly reduced.
In fact, their M-16s seem rather useless. It is now more difficult for the
soldiers and police to remove the shepherds from their own land.

On Wednesday, 16 February, two or more settlers attacked the internationals,
seriously injuring one Operation Dove member. That brought media and
Israeli peace activists to the scene the next day, plus a lot of negative
publicity for both the settlers and the military.

Now shepherds are grazing their sheep on some of their own land, land that
has been forbidden to them for the past four years. The shepherds have
found the strength to take back some of their land.

These actions raise a serious dilemma for the Israeli authorities who are
trying to remove the Palestinians from the South Hebron Hills. How can
anyone reject the simple idea that shepherds should be able to be on their
own land? But if that idea is accepted, how can Israelis continue
confiscating Palestinian land? By uniting together, with international
attention, the shepherds are pushing back the loss of their land.

Put aside all the rhetoric and hyperbole. Simple questions- Should all the critics present viable solutions? Is global terrorism real? Are Iran's nuclear goals peaceful? Palestinians are the problem in having peace with Israel? If you answered "no" to all questions, then you are part of the problem. Complaining, accusing, castigating, hating, attacking, etc. are not the actions of those who seek to solve problems.

Quit whining and do something constructive!
